Do It Yourself Kia Stinger Oil Change

Fumoto valve here. Had them on 4 vehicles over 15 years. No problems. I’d do the pump thing but still have to get under for the filter…

There's a clip in this vid that somewhat pertains to the stinger.

Look around the 30s mark.

Sure enough, 6-⅔ brought the level to just below the full line, and now I know that four jugs will get me exactly three oil changes.
I'm not trying to make your life difficult, merely providing information for you to consider. According to Mobil oil and I use their best the Extended version, their oils have a shelf life of 12 mo once opened. Depending on how many miles you drive perhaps you might be putting in oil with an expired life. Don

I have always bought my oil in advance, mainly due to sales. I'd be curious to know what is the shelf life based on?

Some of mobile oils have a full 1 year service life. Where did you read 1 year shelf life?

Don't have an answer for that question, I merely asked Mobil how to interpret their date codes stamped into the plastic 5 qt synthetic containers. Here it is.

Mobil 1 oil date codes/life
10118E09A
101 = Plant
18 = 2018
E = Month or May, there is no “I” being used
A - Plant shift
Rep says opened shelf life is 12 mo
Unopened is 5 yrs

So I do check the age of oil that I get at Walmart. Most likely the oil get sold so quickly that this is mostly unnecessary but you might be unlucky and get a container the kept getting shoved back in the shelving.

In any event, I will keep paperwork to prove to the dealer that I bought the oil from WM and the filters from them. Don

I think anyone who runs any oil to 20,000 miles is foolish. Fresh oil is the cheapest insurance you can buy to get your engine to last and the Stinger has a 6000 mile interval. Personally, I'll run a change at 7 mo or 4000 miles which ever comes first because of the stress of the turbos. Don

I think the solution here is simple. Since an oil changes takes a full container and a portion of another, simply use that secondary container as primary next time around. My OCI will be 1yr because of low mileage. It does see lots of hwy miles so somewhere in between several and normal duty in terms of mileage (<5K a year). This way that 2nd container is getting used up within a year's time (or less).

Since you apparently do your own oil changes and I haven't yet, have you had any issues with the factory oil filter or any tips you'd share? I just got a 27mm socket for removing and installing/torquing the cap. Thanks, Don

I've only done one so far. The biggest headache was getting the new filter (oem) installed while on a creeper under the car. Next time around i'm going to try having the car higher up so I have some more leverage. I use the good and snug method for both plug and filter. Been doing my own oil changes for over 3 decades now, have yet to screw one up.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I bought several cases of Pennzoil Platinum maybe 8 years??. All the local parts stores were running specials on that oil - it was essentially buy one/get one. I have one quart left and have since been using other oils. But I was probably over 5 years on some of that oil in other vehicles. Oh well.
The Stinger will get Mobil 1.

Yeah, I'm 74 and have been doing oil changes since I was 16 but this Stinger GT1's oil filter system is an entirely new animal. Car ha 1000 miles on it, got a free oil change at the dealer at 600miles. I've always felt it was a good idea to clean out any manufacturing debris at the beginning.

Happy New Year to you. Don

By the time I'm 74, i'll probably be forced to drive an electric car :)

Happy Holidays to you too.

Would be nice if the V6 used canister instead of inferior cartridge type oil filter.

Does the end of the filter on the 3.3L fit into a "sleeve" or similar, in other words, does the design ensure the filter is properly aligned or must you take steps to ensure proper alignment? Don

It has a hole in it and slides onto a sleeve and you press it in until it pops.

Edit: that is right

To clarify things, the filter is pressed into the cap that seals the system. Then it's inserted into the "housing" and threaded in and torqued to 26 ft lbs. Does the "housing" align the filter or must the individual do that? Don

It aligns for you. Just need to make sure your filter is seated all the way in on the cap.

I’ve also recommended this many times but if you plan to do your own oil changes regularly consider investing in a vacuum oil extractor. I have a Mityvac 7400 and it is amazing. Pulls out exactly what was in the car, no mess, and saves a lot of hurt under the car. On vehicles with top mounted filters like my Audi, it takes me 20 minutes to change oil.
