Do It Yourself Kia Stinger Oil Change

I am planning to start changing oil myself instead of having someone else do it. My Stinger is my first new car in many, many years and I would change the oil and filter in my old rigs. The question I have is, are there any zerks or other spots on the Stinger that need regular lubing? My old cars and trucks always had some and I checked those whenever I changed their oil. Is this the same for my Stinger?
No zerks on stinger.

Awesome! That makes it pretty easy if all I need to do is change the oil and filter when it's service time.

Hardest part is getting the underbody panel off to get to the drain plug.

Agreed. An oil extractor is your friend. Then all you have to remove is the round access hole for the filter.

So another reason not to go to dealership is they lost that round piece, or installed incorrectly and it came off, and they must of torqued the filter housing to over 100 ftlbs as I could not loosen it by hand. I had to use my foot, yes my foot to break it loose. Does anyone know what the part number for that round piece for oil filter access if I can even get that separately? Never mind, I did find it, for reference if anyone needs a new one,

Access Cover - Kia (29121-J5000)

It's only $9 so not too bad.

Yikes. You’re lucky it’s not cracked if it was that tight. So many stories of dealer negligence. It really makes you question what you’re paying for?

Did my first oil change and went with Costco's Kirkland 5w-30 full synthetic, a Wix filter from Rock Auto (WL10237), and this extractor.

Went great and can't recommend that extractor enough. It pulled 7 liters (over 7 quarts) out with only a handful of pumps here and there over 6-8 minutes.

Torquing the filter to 26 ft. lbs was a little uncomfortable feeling but went without a hitch.

Glad to answer any questions folks may have20210707_171104.jpg.

I was about to say, wow I need an extractor, then I remembered those things are 100 bucks. lol. I guess it pays for itself pretty quickly though. I've done 2 myself so far, and even though I got the fumoto valve and hose, it is still a pain getting under there. Love the Kirkland oil too. :)

Very nice, we’ll done! Where did you buy that extractor from, and you just pump by hand, no need to connect to compressed air?

It should be a link in my OP but just in case, here's the link:

You can attach a compressor, but honestly, seems like way more work to lug up my compressor than the 20 or so total pumps (3 sets of 6-7) I needed to empty it.

I agree, $100 was a bit rough to stomach at first. Then I got my local dealer saying it'd be $130, and some local shops saying around $80 ("it uses a lot of oil"). Seems like a no brainer now, will pay for itself next oil change, and should take me maybe 20 minutes total next time (took about 45 being careful this first time).

Thanks for the info for the oil extractor. Did you jack the car up to get to the filter? Do you have any tips on making the filter change easier?

Unsure who you are asking, but there is no way you could change the filter without jacking the car up / or ramps.

run car to just before normal operating temp. Let sit for 5 minutes (so you don’t melt the extractor hose when inserted…. This makes the oil easier to extract). Then proceed.

the only reason I used jacks was I wanted to extract while level (at least the first time using the extractor). Then while empty of oil, raise it to get the filter. Then lower it again.

next time I’ll probably use my ramps to save time and extract while on the angle (but leaving more used oil).

I’m using amsoil XL and change a bit more frequently than the normal change frequency. So I’m less concerned about extracting every drop possible of old oil.

only tip is remember that with this car, after the initial fill of new oil, you run car to temp… let sit a few, then check/top off oil.

Fantasic tips all around here, lots I've seen repeated around this site.

I too, choose to extract before jacking but that's because it kills me not getting every last drop.

You really do need to jack the car up if you want to properly torque the filter back on. Note that a good amount of oil will come out when you pull the old filter off so have your drain pan nearby.

Slightly warm oil does make it much easier to work on. Had my wife take my car on a 5 minute errand before I started and it was perfect.

I ended up only jacking one side as the handle for my hydraulic jack is loaned out, which means I had to use the Stingers spare tire jack. That worked great getting it high enough to also get a floor jack in there for safety.

Thanks for the oil filter tips. I really wish they made it so that the filter could be changed from the top instead of getting under the car. It would make the oil extractor much more helpful because it would mean the difference between jacking up the car or not. I’ve seen lots of examples of modern cars not being engineered for easy serviceability. You have to remove all sorts of stuff on my GMC sierra just to change a simple headlight bulb. I love my stinger though, I’m just venting a little.

I feel you. Wife has a Subaru Imprezza and it's all right inside the hood. The 1 thing I'm jealous about with her car.

Could a filter relocation kit be used?

Thank you for the info on the extractor! I tried out the 15L version and am very pleased with it. Pricey, but worth it in my book and a huge upgrade over my aging "Pela" type 6L one.

I ended up using the medium size hose extension and it appeared to have reached the bottom of the pan. One interesting thing I noticed: I extracted as much as a could before working on the filter. After removing the old filter and before installing the new one, I decided to try pumping a few more times to get some dregs, which I was able to do. The interesting part: after I did this and checked under the car again, a new steady stream of oil was trickling from the filter housing. It took over a minute to subside.

Anyhow, super happy with the product. Thanks again for the link.
