Discussion of Stinger paint quality (Was - Paint Chip Issue)

Anyone know why they are not painting the bumpers? Seems like if their is an adhesion issue, which appears to be affecting cars based on build date and not color that the entire car is affected.

In their tests, Kia must have determined that the yellow paint on primed plastic adheres. Whereas on the primer used on the steel it does not in those cases where chipping is noticed. The rubbing of the headlight causing a chip to wear at the edge is not a paint failure. Kia is not addressing rubbing headlight damage so far, or so it seems.

On initial review i am not terribly pleased with this...there are some areas for "goodwill consideration" but we shall see. Also, i could not find anything with regard to "where" the work is to be done??

I am happy to see the detail they provided in the bulletin, but skipping parts of the car is bogus...why no door jambs...they are not plastic. I suppose Kia is ok with paint peeling inside the door jamb of my 50K car...keep that stance and they can buy it back.

I was about to purchase a stinger but i am very concerned to the point of considering another vehicle at this point. KIA has a huge problem on their hand, I would feel more comfortable if they just acknowledged the problem with a set of choices for all colors then I would feel better about taking a risk.

Agreed. I think people really need to step back and evaluate what this really means, rather than just being satisfied with a bandaid solution from KIA. If the paint has adhesion problems, this will also be present under the car, in the engine bay and in the trunk. I've seem people on this forum brush the issue off because they think paint is just some cosmetic issue but its not, its there to protect the metal. These cars are going to have rust issues, especially in winter climates. Further, if they dont paint the door jams or rip the car apart completely, you will absolutely see paint lines and there will be clear coat peeling and flaking in the future. Good luck claiming that after 6 years on your "lifetime warranty". Again I dont want to sound condescending but I dont really understand how anyone would be fine with anything other than a buyout at full purchase price and walking away. Just do it and avoid the risk, uncertainty and hassle. You can always repurchase at a later date when you are confident these problems have been corrected at the factory, which is what you are paying for with a brand new $50K car.

Yes the lemon laws are not clear about paint defects. Acceptible remedies under the lemon law may not be satisfactory for a consumer depending on the extent of the defect and the remediation. Also the lemon law requires substantial amounts of time and effort from the consumer. I think that is not the best solution.

The affected cars (according to KIA's damage control team) are lemon coloured.

What about the fact that the value of this car has now plummeted?
Everyone will know that if you keep the yellow, it was repainted.
I want my lease rates recalculated using a new heavily reduced MSRP.

I leased with the idea of buyout, since the car is Year One and Limited.
Now the car won't be worth spit.

This is my second and last Kia.

If not, then I think everyone here just needs to go through the process. When the solution is presented to you, then you make a decision: Either go through with their solution to your satisfaction or walk away from the car. Neither is the wrong choice.

One of the items that they are repainting is the fuel door, I'm pretty sure that it is plastic.

No bumpers, no door jambs, no under hood, no trunk, no behind license plates, no roof moldings. Kia can just say No apparently and get away with it. They must not be seeing the same pictures everyone on this forum sees. It really is a good thing they are doing here for the one color, but they are doing if half-ass to save themselves some nickels and dimes. Why does this US solution seem to be only a shadow of the Aussie solution.......for the same problem? Answer = number of yellow cars involved and $$$ involved.

I remember somebody said December deadline to decide which option you want. On a side note. The Stinger GT has ruined me for ever driving a slower car. I drove a Mazda 6 Turbo tonight and I thought the guy was messing with me and showing me a base model. The car felt dog slow after driving the Stinger.
