Dealer Visit - Warranty Voided - Taking mods off the car - Experiences with mods

I’d also like to point out how many people in the mustang world would screw up their cars with a bad tuner, try to return stock and complain about the dealer not covering on warranty.

So let’s be honest too... when you add aftermarket stuff to get more out of the car than the manufacturer safely offered the car at, you need to accept the fact that the manufacturer shouldn’t fix things if your add ons could have caused an issue. You chose to risk it.

I can see both sides of the argument here.
I agree that why I like being safe ... I am freaking out about leaving the downpipes and muffler deletes .... but I fully undertand I still want my warranty lol

Let me know what they say, I also bought my Stinger from that same dealership. I had a bit of a issue with them when they tried to sell me TPMS sensors for 600$ and I pretty much ended up telling the GM there to f*ck off lol. I dont think they will give me any leeway regarding mods after that incident. :)

I assume you mean for winter tires you were trying to add on, since the stock wheels come with TPMS, unless the lower trims do not? Funny enough, I asked my dealer if they could get me a better price on winter tires and wheels when buying the car and they gave an honest "no." I did have to fight on the trade in price, but I'm no stranger to that routine...

So I thought that the dealer still profited off the labour when performing warranty work. Dont they see that as a revenue stream or do they make that much money off part markups?

Well, sort of. Kind of a long story but here goes.
The car already had winter tires and rims on it as they were equipped for winter test drives. During my original test drive there was no warning tmps light on the dash. After that, they let me take the car home for the weekend in a brilliant sales tactic lol. During my time with the car those 2 days the tpms sensors warning light did NOT come on. I drove it back to the dealership that Sunday and finalized my paper work and officially purchased the vehicle. At this point I negotiated the current winter tire and rim package already on the car into the purchase price. They told me they needed to detail the car and whatnot and I could pick it up end of day Monday. Upon picking it up Monday, driving home the TPMS sensor malfunction light pops on! At first I thought it was just low tire pressure, which it was not. So I called the dealership and they told me to bring it back the following day for them to take a look at it. Dropped it off in the morning, by about 10am I get a call saying that my winter tires do not come with TPMS sensors and that it will cost $600 to install them. This didnt seem right considering that while I had the car for a full two days there was no warning light of any kind. Also upon purchasing the car, no one had told me that the winter rims didnt come with TPMS sensors, as again, there wasnt any warning lights on the dash! After doing a quick google search I found the exact OEM Stinger TPMS sensons for like $126 CAD on Ebay. Called the dealership back, at this point Im speaking to the GM, who is an arrogant a**hole if I am being honest. He basically accused me of not knowing anything about cars and that I just didnt "see" the warning light and that the TPMS sensors I found werent the right ones, as the ones for the stinger are "special" and are, in fact $600!! LOL
Anyway, at this point I told him to go f*ck himself and hung up. Cool story huh?

Awesome story ... so the GM is POS I like how he used special temps sensor lol ... 600 bucks is a crime they were trying to rape you thank god you didn’t give in .... The example you just gave is the reason I am skeptical and careful with dealers ... that’s why I am skeptical about bringing the car in with mods ... I have basically spoke to a lawyer and he said that act congress has is practically a joke lol that dealers has all the power ... so basically if you get and Intake and your turbo goes bad the dealer can void warranty turbo they can partially blame the intake for it and there is really nothing you can do ... you can the take to court but the odds of you winning and slim to none

Exactly, Ive spoken to a few friends who are mechanics, one for Ford and one for GM, and they both confirmed this. However, both agreed that intakes are in large part are not something that concerns them.

I guess you know now why they needed to "Detail" the car.
It's never a "Detail" its just a regular wash and vacuum, hardly qualifies as a detail. That's why I always say no to any "detailing" from the dealer.

Do you think they took them out? I dont want to think there are people or businesses that would do such shady shit, but I wouldn't put it past them at this point. I guess I would have no way of proving it. And to be honest, there was no detailing of any kind, I think they just washed the exterior lol

Hard to say without any proof, but the fact is, you had the car for 2 days and no tpms light was on, which indicates that sensors were working and sending signal to the computer inside the car. Then signature time comes, and on your drive home, that same day, light pops up. Which means either the sensors stopped sending signal to the computer in the car or one of them, for some odd reason, went out.

I gotta ask...was the dealer price on the TPMS $600 EACH or for the SET of FOUR? $600 sounds right if you found them for $127 each online.

They wanted $600 for the set of 4 to supply and install. For comparison I called a local tire shop and they quoted me $200 for the exact same supply and install. The $126 were for a set of 4 on Ebay.

bolt ons aren't going to void warranties. exhaust and intakes typically don't break anything. Is this just a KIA thing? I don't think I ever heard of anyone in other car forums I've been on over the years worry about bolt ons voiding warranties. every car i've ever had had an intake and exhaust - from chevy to beemer to infiniti. Even the secondary cats shouldn't be an issue on this car b/c removal doesn't do anything but allow more emissions leaving the engine. The primary cat removal might be a different story. Lowering springs shouldn't either - just about every SoCal dealership has a lowered Stinger on eibachs and 20 in TSWs. I've even seen one with K&N intakes in them!

Call different dealerships if you are fortunate enough to have a few around you...

As for this it's not that the dealers are trying to rape you it's KIA Canada setting the MSRP and raping the dealers on the cost, the TPMS sensors you see online are most likely coming from Korea (same reason an E badge is $30 from Korea but an NA KIA badge is 80+) MSRP on the sensors (set by KIA Canada themselves not the individual dealership) is $146.54, you could buy the exact same sensor from Genesis for about $100 a few months ago (but have since jumped to $170) and the tpms sets on ebay for $125 is significantly less then the cost of dealers buying 2 sensors from KIA Canada, So it really comes down to KIA Canada being completely out to lunch and raping the dealers and instilling higher MSRPs making the dealers look like the bad guys

I drive a charger with TPMS and don't run sensors in my winters (because i'm cheap they go off all the time anyway) and I'd say more then 50% of the time my light isn't on anyway, so I'm more so positive there wasn't any sensors in the wheels

The advisor just pretty much told not to mod the car at all if it’s engine related ... other mods like suspension and exterior are fine .... or in other words take all mods off when going to dealer but that’s a pain

I spoke with my service manager before finalizing the deal and outlined my expectations for mods and wanted his input as to what was okay and what was not. He said he was perfectly fine with intakes, mid-pipe and catback exhaust. He was very specific about not removing the primary cat or the O2 sensor because as soon as the car starts throwing codes warranty work will become an issue.

And he stated very clearly, do not mess with the suspension as any springs or coil overs will void any claims towards the suspension. He was cool with sway bars however. Interesting how everyone is getting a different take from their dealer.

How about those stingerhouse mods? Like the borla exhaust and intakes? Those are suppose to be kia approved aftermarket parts. So they wont void the warranty right?

lol...a dealer cannot deny warranty. It's not their place to deny it. They enjoy warranty work, they make 40% on parts and quite a bit on labor.

The manufacture can ask for photo's and data on the vehicle and if the manufacture detects mods the manufacture can deny the claim from the dealer and the dealer is SOL and get's no money

Interesting. When I got my winter tires through a local tire shop, they priced out the TPMS and said they could only get them through Kia and were going to be $600 for the set, as they said their generic ones wouldn't work. But they had no problem with me providing them to them, so I did the same thing and got a set of OEM ones through ebay for $130, delivered.

Kal Tire quoted me $200 +tax.

I respectfully disagree.... the experiences that I have heard off and seen with some of my friends say otherwise ...
