Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

I applied it to the ALL of the rubber trim of the actual sunroof itself, as well as where slides into the body, not just the front rubber flap, that wont do anything.
I'm convinced its not a lubrication issue , all my noise is from the front , where the the slider meets the roof of the car , when I push up on the frame of the slider in the front I can recreate the noise , it doesnt occur on the side or rear ....................

I'm not sure that the sounds people are hearing from the sunroof are all the same.

In my new '18 GT2, I have a clicking/ticking noise coming from the headliner area at the back of the sunroof. It most definitely is NOT what I'd describe as a creak or rattle that specifically happens when the car is flexing or on rough roads - it's much more constant/random sounding. Seems to go away (or at least be very minimized) when I push up and put pressure on the headliner with my hand while driving, but I haven't done that enough to be sure it's not just anecdotal.

I got the shin etsu grease just to try it (and have it for the future for all door seals etc.) and applied it to all contact points and rubber gaskets around the sunroof and it didn't affect the ticking/clicking noise at all.

EDIT: Important to note, mine still clicks/ticks regardless of sunroof or headliner being opened/closed. I'm convinced it's probably a crossbar bolt or something under the headliner that needs grease or a rubber washer.

I had a local guy try it and it worked for him. I guess I just lucked out?

I will say this, when I would push and pull on the sunroof, it didnt make any noises, so mine was a lubrication issue.

My car makes weird sounds. Driving down any imperfect road (we got lots of them in Seattle) it sounds like it's raining (got lots of that too). The sunroof makes little pitter patter pops. This is different than when I back into my uneven driveway when it groans like it wants to spit out the glass.
Was it raining when you've been hearing this? I have a similar strange noise but it always seems to be when a large drop of water hits the sunroof, it seems to make some kind of strange metallic echo noise. Hard to explain what it is but I only ever hear it when I'm under trees that are dropping water droplets.

I would have to believe my noise is mechanical , rubber or lube issues might squeak , this is a definite creaking/ticking sound . something is either too loose or too tight , it almost sounds like my roof could explode ....................

Nope. Bone dry

Agreed, mine sounds like it wants to spit out the glass

Well, if the car did launch out the sunroof, that would be very unfortunate. It would be hard for the dealer to tell you they won't replace it for you though...lol. That might fix the noise.

we'll get to the bottom of this !!

You may be right about it being mechanical, the mechanism that holds the glass could be vibrating enough to be touching other components, also have you or the dealer tried to apply WD40/Silicone Spray to the pivot/hinge points.
My sunroof in my 2013 Sportage did a similar thing on the passenger side (LH) & it ended up being a part of the mechanical system was vibrating in the track/u-channel when the roof was closed & cover open, every other scenario was no noise, go figure.

My car had serious overspray from a sloppy application of Lube by the Stealer last time in ( along with a chipped rim , gouged tire and torn steering wheel , if you sense my reticense about Stealers youre not mistaken !! ), and that didnt work either .................

Yep, I’m hearing you, big reason why I’m not a GM/Holden owner, they are nothing but “rats with gold teeth”.
My current Kia Service Dept. is totally opposite, I’ve being going there since 09, they value our custom & loyalty & could not be more helpful & accomodating.
I’m sad to hear a lot of our North American brothers & sisters have had such poor experiences with Dealers, would not be tolerated here, you can only vote with your feet & move on.

I had noise in my '12 Sportage as well. Partial fix was placing foam under the thin metal parts that run adjacent to the tracks. Also slamming the visor open sometimes. It wasn't horrendous but I don't think it was ever fully resolved, just better from time to time.

I also hear popping from my sunroof when driving whether it's open or closed. I have also heard intermittent popping noises from the door seals. I'm definitely not happy about it given the price of the car. I had an Optima turbo with panoramic sunroof that never made a sound so I know I shouldn't have to settle for this. I have the same dilemma others have mentioned that I worry my problem will get bigger if I take it in for service and they start taking things apart. I also don't want anyone else driving it!

I will be watching for posts on the issue being solved. I would try the grease suggestion, but would rather Kia fix the problem.

My sunroof metal rails and frame are being replaced due to this issue FYI , make sure you file a case with Kia Corp

Funny you say that because when the problem first started, it was a buzzing sound that would stop when I touched the metal rail at the back. I will definitely contact them. Thanks for the response.

April 2018
I have an April 18 build date as well. I haven't heard any odd things with the sunroof as of yet but then again I picked mine up beginning of November. I'm at 2100 km. It could be mine hasn't happened yet and may happen after a bit more mileage .
