Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

Kia stinger GT

Going to call the dealer in the morning because the creaking and the rattling from the sunroof is driving me mad

Upon further investigation the noise seems to be due to the rubber seals around the edging of the sunroof. Others with the same issue have used a rubber lubricant with success.

I work at Autobarn in Melbourne so there's a huge range of products for me to use. I'm going to try the Penrite rubber grease in a very small quantity to see if that improves or solves the problem.

I suspect if i bring it into the dealer, that's all they would do.

Tell us your findings. Always good to find solutions to issues with our cars :)

After applying the Bosch rubber grease (that's the only one we had in stock at work), I have eliminated about 80 - 85% of the noise coming from the roof.
You have to have the windows closed, radio on mute and listen carefully to hear it. It's a win in my book, but I still will mention it to the dealer when I go in for the first service.

Great! Thank you very much for letting us know...

I slid back the roof cover for the first time today and thought it was raining... loads of pops and creaks. Must have been doing this for some time but the sound was deadened by the cover. Annoyingly I’d just taken the car in on Monday to see about a door rattle (which was not acknowledged by the dealership). I’ll try the grease - really hope I can sort this myself.

Recently started hearing this noise louder. I first heard it about three weeks into ownership. I mention it to the dealer and they estated the whole headliner will have to come off and will take about a week. At that point I bailed and decided to live with it, but now it has gotten worse.

My take is that there too much chasis flex and the rubber is not sealing properly against the metal frame. Will try the grease and see the results.

I'm having this issue as well....lots of creaking coming from the sunroof.
I'll get the rubber grease, and try that.

Could someone who has dealt with this issue help me out...
could you be a bit more specific as to where they applied the grease?

Thanks.

Basically I applied the grease along all the rubber seals that directly make contact with the sunroof, so both sides front and rear.

On the same topic, I was doing a road test with the workshop manager from my kia dealer and I mentioned it too him. He said he had similar problems with the optima GT (from my understanding its the same sunroof). He said if you can apply the grease to the front seal mainly that should solve most of the creaking.

Tip for application on the rear seal. Don't open the roof, just pop it up.

Edit: if you need more assistance, I'll post photos to show where I applied it.

Thanks for the additional info. If you don't mind, please post some photos.

I think this could become a more common issue for owners, as initially I didn't hear any noise, but it's gotten worse in the last few weeks.

From what I remember, the 2014-2016 Cadenza was prone to this issue as well, moreso with it's panoramic sunroof. I vaguely remember hearing pops and cracks every time the car would turn into a hill or descent, and I've heard of the sunroof shattering out of nowhere, so every car ride was a gamble

it isn't just hyundai and kia with the sunroof problems, it is across the board. think about it, a huge pane of glass that flexes as the car goes down the road. it will flex, no matter what. i had a land rover discovery that had two sunroofs, on over each row of seats. the back one popped off, luckily fell into vehicle and even luckier no one in back seat and it didn't break. seems the screws that held it in place worked their way out. checking the forums, seems some did that. don't know why some of them worked they way loose and others didn't

I have a GT1 that is about 2 months old and I have a creaking/crackling sound coming from the headliner. It sounds like a crackling sound that would come from an am radio station but i comes from the headliner. I think it is velcro that makes a noise due to the vibration from the road. It is very minor but highly annoying. I plan to see if the dealership can address when i take it in for the first oil change. Any ideas on a remedy?

It could be the rubber seals rubbing up against either the glass or something else. I would first try what Adzismad2 did and buy some rubber grease and apply the grease to the seals, especially the front and rear seals. It's inexpensive and could probably solve the problem, if it persists then definitely bring it up at the dealership or even try calling Kia's preferred customer line and opening a case with them.

This just started happening to mine. Did you ever get it fixed? Took it to a dealership nearby and they confirmed it. I was told I would have to let them keep my car and they may have a loaner car for me. I may have to do it as I'm going insane hearing it.

I did what a previous poster suggested. I added some rubber grease to all the rubber surrounding the glass and that made it go away.

The sunroof on my Kia Stinger GT2 has been creaking and rattlings since about 1 month into ownership. I have it set to go to dealer for repair, and I hope it is done right the first time. Rather disappointing issue on a $50K car.
