Borla Exhaust for Kia Stinger

I have about enough material to cover the important parts of the trunk area an spare tire well. That is where the majority of exhaust noise is coming from and if I need to I will get some more product.

Great call extending spoiler wrap to sides. Looks awesome!!

Thanks but I have to give credit to Joe and Chris at Incognito Wraps in Vegas. It was their idea as well as a few others.

Had my Borla installed Saturday. Sounds great outside but too noisy inside. The db inside takes away from the "luxury" portion of "Luxury Performance" part of this car. However, after reading posts here I had already ordered 20 sq/ft of Damplifier Pro™ 2mm Butyl Vibration Sheets (12" X 20") *MADE IN USA* and 18 sq/ft of Luxury Liner Pro Single Sheet Bundle w/ Spray Adhesive - Mass Loaded Vinyl + Closed Cell Foam. Should help considerably and I will post pics of the install. Here is a dropbox link to a video on startup after the install. The audio is fair.Dropbox - 1526159751352_IMG_14881.3gpView attachment 7278

Sounds good Jim.

I used a variety of measures for sound deadening....what seemed to make the biggest impact was Mineral Wool. It is fire and mold resistant. Stuff comes in a huge bail for about 24 bucks at home depot. I also used some closed cell foam under the back seat.

So did you keep the Borla???

Would love to see pics/summary of what you have done for "deadening"

I haven't taken pics, but a description of what I've done is easy to picture as you look at the area where the spare is stored.

Of course you must acquire the deadening materials. In my case I had a bunch of dynamatt from previous cars that I've "deadened" in the past. I also have ordered a bunch of different "deadening" materials to further improve my results (I hope).

After I remove everything (including spare), I started installing the "dynamatt" to all of my painted surface that was easy to get to, perfect is not required but cover what you can. I also had a sheet of 5" medium density Vasco-elastic foam (accepted as a good sound absorption material) that I marked and cut out a circle for the spare. I then installed the spare and fitted this foam in the void around tire. From the round cut material, I cut a smaller round to stuff in center of spare and stuffed it into spare center. My piece actually is too thick to allow the OEM hard foam piece to sit back in the spare (you'll see). Whether this piece is needed is up to you. I also had some 2" Vasco foam that I cut and stuffed into any voids- anywhere you see a void- stuff some. I also cut another block of foam to fill the huge rearward void. Remember the top OEM cover will cover all this, so all is unseen.

When my ordered materials come in, I plan to cut one solid piece (sheet) that I'll lay over the spare again, just under the factory top piece.

THIS IS A WORK-IN-PROGRESS. As I tested different materials and locations (towels, moving blankets, etc...) I tried to evaluate what materials I could order to work best, and now I wait. I'd still like another dB less (or3).

My goal is to quieten the cabin but keep everything looking no different from factory from the outside AND to do this without adding more weight than required. The Borla exhaust weighs about 20# less than OEM, so this 20# should allow my all my insulation at no weight penalty overall.

Again, I absolutely love the Borla sound, from outside it is near perfect (almost too quiet) but was kinda sharp from the drivers seat. Now, due to break-in and my deadening efforts, even the wife is smiling now. It's such a sweet sound, too bad that sound seems amplified inside when first installed.

If anyone is interested, I could take pics, but you really can do this yourself without further instructions. A few less dB makes this exhaust much more enjoyable. It really wasn't EVER a drone, it's that sweet sound bouncing around with nothing to catch it but your ears...

edit--> I owe thanks to Sarge for keeping me informed as he worked on his too. We sorta tag-teamed this problem looking at it with two sets of eyes/ears. Thanks Sarge.
AND, I haven't done anything under the rear seat yet- gotta wait on my next orders to arrive...

Come on guys you wanted nice exhaust note and the majority of people are complaining. Now you know why kia made exhaust so quite. What do you guys think is going to happen. Now you know what Porsche and others have been going through for years. I think a sporty car should sound sporty.just one guys opinion. Good luck you will get use to. I’ve had for few months it becomes normal.

A lot of noise is feed back from exhaust not going to end of tips and not being sealed there at tip. If you notice stock mufflers have plates welded on to keep sound from bouncing around. See if local shop can weld a extra few inches of pipe to push sound back further back.

Nah, it's not that I want to "change" the sound, I want to "lessen" the sound inside the car. I really could not stand the "OEM quietness" of this car - I wanted noise, just not so much. An exhaust system like the Varex really is ideal, but will add cost and complexity.
I worked in a very noisy plant, I suffer due to that constant excessive noise. Now I want the majority of my noise to be outside the car- and am working toward this (easily achievable?) goal.
I agree with you mostly, it's where we draw the line as acceptable that differs. Our cars are sporty cars and this Borla lets those around us know this KIA is different. But it shouldn't be uncomfortable to most owners UNLESS THEY WANT IT THAT LOUD.
Sound deadening can make good even gooder...

Let me see if I can get this right. You want noise but you don't want to hear it. So who is the noise for the people around you? They probably don't want to hear it either. Don't want to offend just trying to understand what the noise is for.
Not so long ago in my vette years I loved noise. Now when I hear a Mustang I say to myself "what a douche" but it''A Mustang . They probably don' want to hear it in the car either.
In my Harley years the louder the better, now can't stand it.
So the question is why did you want a louder exhaust if you did not want to hear it?
Wow Kia must be on the other side of the world. They got it way wrong pumping the noise on the inside (to the person who wants to hear it THE DRIVER) and quiet on the outside.
In my opinion there is 2 reasons for aftermarket exhaust. 1 louder exhaust and
2 better performance.
I don' own a stinger yet but when I do I will want it loud but don' want it loud so I will probably go with a quiet less restrictive aftermarket or stay stock.

Where did I ever say I don't want to hear it?

I said I want to lessen it inside the cabin. I thought that was always apparent and repeated.

I too have a Harley (S&S Evo) WCC pipes. About as loud as they come, and perfect for this bike. Not perfect for MY Stinger.
I love the sound of this car from outside, I don't love having 90+dB inside the cabin of my car.

So, again, where did I say I don't want to hear my exhaust? I love the sound, just not the volume. Big difference...

Do you wear earplugs when you ride?

I know you like the noise outside bit your inside. That' my point so why have a loud exhaust. For one thing it's not that loud of an exhaust from what I have heard.
It' all good I should have not bit in, I just found it amusing.

It is all good! I understand the confusion- it happens.
I look at it kinda like a really good stereo system- it does not require tons of volume to hear if it's quality or not. To me, this Borla system has this quality sound, I just want the volume lowered a few dB (inside the car).

Everyone really does need to hear, in person, any exhaust they intend to buy. Hear it from inside as it goes through several accelerations at various throttle positions- but we all know this is not feasible (so I'm a guinea pig). Believe me, short videos audio is not always like real life.

This Borla is not an offensive exhaust inside or out, but it gets loud at times. Since a volume control is no option (unless a varex system), I can work to quieten inside by dampening, it's really not hard nor that unusual. Once done, it's done.

And, yes, I do wear plugs when I ride that obnoxious big cammed hog. It's still loud...
It's all good...

See this Google tidbit- An increase of 3dB doubles the sound intensity but a 10dB increase is required before a sound is perceived to be twice as loud. Therefore a small increase in decibels represents a large increase in intensity. For example - 10dB is 10 times more intense than 1dB, while 20dB is 100 times more intense than 1dB.

I don't think most here would like My mustang then.. Ceramic shorty headers, O/R H pipe, 12" glasspacks, and Trident Motorsports Axlebacks.. you can hear me a few blocks away when I get on it. Also it's a convertible so you can hear it inside pretty well too.

My 06 Mustang had big Gibsons on it...sounded great from the outside and from the inside, well, let's just say you had to really project during a conversation lol I am not really looking for that with my Stinger, as much as I love a nice exhaust note.

Same here for the stinger, looking for little to no drone and just a bit of a rumble especially when you get on her.
