So they just left the acuator hanging there? On the weekend my Bi-Modal became louder in Comfort mode...I think to myself "that's interesting" and didn't give it another thought.
Started it up in the morning to go on the NSW drive and sound was normal except for a metallic rattle. I didn't think too much of it as car was performing normally except for that annoying rattle which came and went. At one of the drive stops I investigated further and found the left side electronic actuator that attaches to the flap shaft had parted company.
This what it looked like when first spotted

Went to Dealer this morning and they immediately put it on a hoist and unplugged the actuator. The flap shaft is clearly shown and has free movement so that was the "rattle" I was hearing.

Here's a pic of the right hand side. There's a retaining pin in the centre of the bracket that apparently holds thing together. There are a few possibilities of what happened to the left hand one.... a. It wasn't installed correctly b. it wasn't installed c. it broke....Dealer hadn't heard of this happening previously so there's no proper explanation.

One would think it would be a simple case to source another pin, but not so. Dealer says KIA would insist on a "genuine" pin to maintain warranty integrity which is a reasonable statement but guess what......the pin may not be available as a spare part. Apparently the system comes pre-assembled from the manufacturer so all the dealer does is bolt on and wire. Dealer stated KIA might want to replace the entire system!!! OMG.
The issue has been escalated and I'm now waiting on a decision. In the meantime my Stinger sounds like it's sports mode most of the time and that rattle at low revs continues.

Cannot complain about that sort of service, good news. The Dealer called and and said KIA want to replace the entire exhaust. Said will take approx 2 weeks to get in.
Hey Jamie, I've driven a couple of demos with the bimodal exhaust, sounds heaps better than stock that's for sure.Hi Everyone,
Took delivery of my micro Blue GT a few days ago; am loving it. Just wondering if anyone in Melbourne has actually heard this new exhaust as yet? Is it actually available to be ordered and fitted? Would want to hear before I commit to getting it.
Thanks for any info you have.
Well done byrnzie you are amongst others with good taste. Have a look around our place and ask questions if you like. 1 question to you first. What state are you from? Would you mind putting that in your location discription thanks.Hey Jamie, I've driven a couple of demos with the bimodal exhaust, sounds heaps better than stock that's for sure.
i'm waiting on delivery of my new Stinger, micro blue, bimodal, tinted windows and ceramic paint protection, can't wait.
There are no power gains from the Bi modial exhaust. It is an axle back exhaust.Has anyone had a dyno done or know of any before and after results with the Kia bi-modal exhaust system ?
It sounds ok but I think it can be a little deeper. I wonder if anyone has gone to a specialist exhaust centre for a quote. Would a non factory bi-modal exhaust affect performance and tuning?
Ahh never mind. There are no power gains from the Bi modial exhaust. It is an axle back exhaust.

The problem so far with all the aftermarket exhausts for the Stinger is the dreaded drone factor. The bi modial was engineered to stop this. I guess that is a good selling point. I went aftermarket and suffered the consequences.Hey AV8R, the bimodal exhaust would have zero effect on performance because it's only the rear resonators, the valves only allow a small bypass of exhaust gas past the rear resonators, to improve sound. This is the reason I'm not interested in a $2600.00 option that only improves the sound.
To improve performance and sound you would have to change the exhaust from at least the Catalytic converter back and probably replace the catalytic converter to a better breathing one. (Cant wait to get my car on a hoist so I can dissect the exhaust system). I can fabricate exhaust systems. I could easily replace the stock rear resonators and pipes for $500 and make the car sound better than with the bi-modal exhaust, and probably pick up a few extra KW in the process if done right. but I'm only talking less than 5KW here for the rear resonators and deepending on the ECU, Engine MAP's, fly-by-wire throttle, and turbo waste gates, a full CAT back exhaust could realise an extra ~15KW without other modifications.
To really improve performance, then you would be looking at the collectors from the turbos to the catalytic converter also to see if there would be gains to open these up from stock.
Then things start to get exotic, Air box repalcements, looking at the intercooler and flow through that, ECU Maps, throttle demand and position, boost pressures controlled by the turbo waste gates, Cam timing (variable valve timing) all adjustable via the ECU Maps.
I've been looking into this, and there are a couple of cars with about $3000,00 in mods, bolt on and ECU maps, that are getting north of 300KW at the rear wheels. The stock car would be about 220KW after drive train losses.
This car has to meet ADR sound laws to keep it under 90db, and the stinger is very quiet, I'll be testing this when I get mine to see what the potential is to push more performance and better sound.
I don't know what the size of the exhaust is stock, but a good well sorted 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust would achieve this without the need for bi-modal valves and with well placed resonators, and it would sound fantastic. I'm not sure with a 3.3ltr V6, if you would be able to get below the safe 90db with a 3" exhaust system, but we will see.
There are several tuners in Melbourne who are fabricating CAT back exhausts for this car that really sound way better than the bi-modal, but also make the car breath better and improve performance. These can be had for $1200 to $1500.
Plus you have a full Kia warranty. The problem so far with all the aftermarket exhausts for the Stinger is the dreaded drone factor. The bi modial was engineered to stop this. I guess that is a good selling point. I went aftermarket and suffered the consequences.
OFC the warranty, hence why it wont be altered for the next 3 years, but after that, I'm not fussed. Yes it has 7 years, and you know what kudos to Kia for putting the industry on notice. But the reality is after 3 years I'm going to work.Plus you have a full Kia warranty.
Yeah agreed, however full performance exhaust will always be a compromise, I've heard some that drone and some that don't. If and when I decide to do anything with my car, I will be doing the work myself, including fabricating the exhaust, I can make good power without droning, it a bit of an art to tuning exhaust but understand after market performance parts makers are selling performance so the trade off is exhaust drone. Come the time I do it, it won't be about out and out performance, it will be to augment a great car and still retain the spirit of GT. That is Luxury, Comfort, Performance, and Style. The sound is important but not at the expense of aural comfort. If I wanted a noisy beast I'd buy a car that already was a noisy beast. The problem so far with all the aftermarket exhausts for the Stinger is the dreaded drone factor.
