anyone using 5w40 instead of 5w30 on tuned cars ?

As far as I know, lspi only happens if you lug the engine (I.e floor it in 7th at 1500 rpm in manual mode type thing) - l stands for low. I don't do that. My racing shop mechanic recommends motul sport 5w40 for the track due to higher temperature stability. Not 100% saying he's the absolute expert either.

I asked some questions on bitog and the suggested m1, which my mechanic hates and was terrible in my subaru. Quaker state full synthetic 5w40 euro has a40 and mb 229.5 qualifications and lower calcium, iirc, and so does Castrol edge 5w40 euro - but they're hard to find..
I'm definitely not an expert either. I'm an car enthusiast at best. And I agree that the likelihood of a LSPI event happening is low but I'm trying to take every precaution I can since I'm tuned. For my driving habits a scenario that would increase the chances of a LSPI event is when...

I'm in Eco crusing at 45-55 mph and start going up a grade. The RPM is low, around 1200RPM and the demand on the engine will become high. Low RPM and high engine load is not a good place to be. I probably should drive in Sport mode all the time to prevent this scenario from happening. Sport mode holds the engine in higher RPM's/lower gears reducing the chances of a low RPM high engine load situation. Plus it's more fun to drive in sport. But lately I find myself in Eco more often because the price of gas has went through the roof.

Also I'm thinking that the API wouldn't have come out with the new standard of SN+ if automobiles wasn't experiencing LSPI events. All in all Motul 8100 xcess 5w-40 is probably just fine to use but for my own curiosity I'm going to try AMS oil 5w-40 MS to see if it has less calcium in it. I'll send it out for oil analysis and report back when the results are in.

so im looking at the idemitsu 5w30 seems good for our needs , for 5w30 anyway sp/gf6 certified

Mobil 1 5w30 is what I have been using in all my vehicles. SP and GF6.

On a side note: Have you seen the price of oil now? Holy Crap.

I can’t do Mobil 1 for a bunch of reasons but if it works for you that’s good

Gotcha.

What about Total Quartz 9000 Future XT 5W30?

Been looking at that, I used it in my Volvo S60R and it was good.

M1 5w30 is supposed to also have high levels of calcium, and I burned a LOT in my Legacy GT wagon (STI engine detuned a bit). Like 1 quart every 3-4k miles. Pennzoil Platinum stopped that. Also supposed to have high calcium, possibly causing lspi / making it worse. But, Terry Burger swears by it.

Liqui Moly, per Bob is the oil guy, is "average at best" oil with "great marketing".

At this point, it's like I can't find an oil that doesn't feel like it's going to blow up my engine :-)

For the last 1-2 years, I've been doing Kirkland/Costco 5w30 because first, I wasn't driving much (covid), then, because I was changing it all the time (after every track weekend). But, price has gone from $25 for 10 quarts to like $42+. I.e. almost the same price as brand-name oils.

I will probably try Motul Sport 5w40 based on my mechanic's recommendation, but do UOA before and after to see how it stacks up.

Interesting on Shell's US website it says SN but on Shell's AU website it says SP. Maybe the US website hasn't been updated. Thanks for sharing, I ordered the Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 yesterday. From reading about the two oils it seems like they share the same Pure plus technology and Pennzoil is owned by Shell. The only difference between the two oils is probably the bottle.

Through oil analysis is how I found that Motul is high in calcium which has been shown to promote LSPI. You can see in the oil analysis Motul is loaded with calcium compared to all the other oils I have tried. This is why I won't continue to use Motul. I might give AMS oil 5W-40 a try or I might just go back to AMS oil 5W-30 signature series. Since AMS oil 5W-30 was my best oil report so far. AMS oil is the column to the right of my unit averages and Motul is the column to the left of my unit averages. I want a 5w-40 oil that meets API SP standards but I doubt there is one out there.

What exact Motul was this?

What exact Motul was this?
it was the 5w40 8100 series , ive been using the penzoil ultra platinum 5w40 all summer and the car seems to like it as well as the sp rating

What exact Motul was this?
Also since we know AmsOil signature series is so good- has anyone thought about using their 0w-40? (Since there is no 5w40 in signature series)
