Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

Is there a method for getting this free as I just called the premium number (855-542-7733) earlier in the thread and this lady was having no part of offering it for free. She said it is not covered under warranty and all map updates are paid. I don't recall her name but she was borderline rude.

I bought my car about a week ago and it came with v10.47... Current version is 11.41. So all I said was, "Uh, shouldn't my brand new car have come with the current software?"

Call in and ask for Micah. If he's unavailable, ask for his extension and leave him a message, he'll help you out.

Micah is indeed who you want to ask for. He has a card on the way for me as well. Car had the map pack from December on it from when it was built. I bought it at the end of February and had no issues getting a card on the way for me.

Thanks. Will need to call back on Monday as they just closed.

You guys are having such great success, that I am going to give it a try and call Micah. Are they only open week days?

Call and be indignant that you just bough the car and the updates shortly came out afterwards. If the person on the phone can't be of help, ask to speak to a supervisor. The squeaky wheel gets the oil!

Very happy with their customer service in Canada as well. Called them yesterday and will be getting the free nav update by Thursday. Had to pay for it upfront but KIA will be reimbursing via my dealership. Bought my Stinger in late February.
Can you please let me know which number you dialed for customer service in Canada, and who you spoke to. Thx for your help!

And you can tell Kia is doing a good job at keeping up with who has bought what. I didn't give any shipping information to him, just my name and basic car details to verify. He knew where to ship it from there.

According to this thread: Stinger 122S5A Updates (What's New), there are functional changes to the NAV and audio system that go beyond just updating the map. Either those changes need to be separated so everyone can get them without a map update, or KIA needs to be giving the functional + map update for free. This is ridiculous.

Where do I find out which version I have right now and what’s the newest update? Thank you

There have been multiple posts on the forum that has word from Kia that the software update will be available for free, separately from the map update available now. No word on when though.

Thanks--hadn't seen those. Hope it's sooner than later :)

Let me jump in here with a slight O.T. question. (It's Sunday here and I can't get into Kia to ask but maybe when I find out it will help everyone.)
I understand the extreme expense in keeping millions of miles of roads up to date with names, speed limit changes, etc. But who does this? Does Kia do it all by themselves? Or do they contract it out to a commercial source like Garmin?

I just picked up my GT2 a couple of weeks ago and it has a speed limit on one of my highways coming into town that was changed over a year ago. It still shows the old speed limit. How do we users notify Kia (or whoever) of these errors and updates? Unless we can do that, paying once a year for a big update is not very attractive, especially when Google maps and Waze are always available for free. The only downside is that the turns don't show in the HUD on the GT2's except from the Kia nav maps....and of course you always want to stay up to date on the software for Android or Apple.

Since Kia is closed on Sunday, I sent an e-mail asking about how to notify for updates and errors. I'll share that when I receive an answer.

I live only two miles from my dealer. There are three speed mistakes just between them and my house that I already noticed on the first drive in the car. My previous car had camera-based AI, not map-based speed recognition. Paying every year to update this--assuming the map company even knows about the update--is absurd. Add in that other functional software updates related to the multimedia interface and Android Auto/Apple Car Play come bundled with the map and you have a total customer service fiasco. And then there is always the, "other countries get the updates for free" classic KIA scenario.

I don't have any problem paying for map updates as long as there is some mechanism to advise them of errors. Think of the impossibility of keeping track of every speed limit change and new road built in a year, or the cost of paying tens of thousands of employees to check, recheck and submit changes. Every other car I've ever known charges about the same for map updates. The updates also contain info about new businesses, restaurants, service stations and all that stuff. And the camera-based speed limits miss a lot of signs that are blocked by other signs or vegetation, or just plain aren't there, which is a major concern in Oklahoma where they save pennies by omitting speed limit signs, especially in traffic watch zones. Great source of local income, don'tcha know ....

Map updates are from Hyundai's MNSoft division, which purchases their data (map and POI) from HERE.com. HERE have contact information on their site, but I don't see a mechanism for reporting errors/omissions.

As for paying for the updates, that's a common practice among auto manufacturers. If you buy something like a Genesis, you can get map updates for 'free', along with other perks - but you pay for it when you buy the car.
