3.3TT Transmission and Diff Fluid

I will try to get it done without removing the sway bar or the steering rack first, but if I failed I will be dropping things and cussing bc I'm working on a G80 sport AWD it might have a slightly more room than the Stinger and the G70.

And omg the old diff fluid stinks, it's smelled like a crusty septic tank.
You don't have to remove any components. The steering rack hangs there by the tie rod ends. Removing the 4 mounting bolts will save you many cuss words. But that's my opinion. Good luck with your project

The steering shaft has to be disconnected as well. That was what I had to do during my last differential oil change. I stripped the fill plug.

Yea man thank you for your advice and I appreciate. But hopefully I can get it done the easy way.

Did you applied thread locker to the bolts after draining and filling?

I don't remember disconnecting the steering shaft. I only remember removing the 4 mounting bolts for the rack. It was a yr ago and my memory isn't the best.

No I didn't. I want to be able to remove it without any problems next time. Just 35lbs ft is good.

I didn't do it myself. Once I stripped the bolt ( you always wanna loosen the fill plug, before draining), I took it to my cousin's shop, and he did disconnected steering shaft. With the lift it was super easy anyway. With steering rack lowered, there was a lot of room.

No concerns about messing up the alignment?
If you don't disconnect tie rod ends, it wont affect alignment. But you, obviously, have to be careful, and install steering shaft in exactly same slots.

Same slots? There's only 4, so that part is hard to mess up :). Are the slots slotted at all? Is there any play or is it a relatively tight fit where the bolts go in - in the rack as well as frame?

I was talking about steering shaft that connects to steering rack. But since I had my cousin connected it, I am not sure if it is slotted or not. So it might be much easier than that. Edit: just checked it. It's not even slotted. Basically there's only one way to connect it back.

I think we're talking about two different things. My understanding was post 61 refers to disconnecting the steering rack from the frame (4 bolts).

I imagine disconnecting the steering shaft would allow the rack to drop even lower, but is that really necessary? You trying to get a socket in there or a box wrench?

I vaguely recall when the car was in for the leaking front axle shaft, they dropped the rack to check front diff fluid as that was my initial complaint - front diff leaking. Later they realized the lube was not from the front diff but rather the axle bearing (awd front driver side, near the oil filter).

Next time I'm under there I will pay closer attention to see what's where.

Not sure if you can do it with removing just 4 bolts. But without any slots on the steering shaft it is just one more bolt, and you will have all the room you need there. And since the fill plug on mine was stripped it helped a lot. So, maybe removing only 4 bolts will give you enough room to get to fill plug.

Hmm... This was a year ago. I do recall it dropping a few inches with just the rack bolts. Perhaps because yours was stripped you needed more room to extract it?

Most likely, that was the case. Either way, no need for alignment after. And one more way to get to the fill plug, if you can't reach it. First time it changed the oil, I did it without dropping steering rack, and it was real pita.

I didnt drop anything, once you find it it isnt so bad.
I used a 12 inch extension and I think another 4 inch extension on that...Im glad its a hex or Im sure I would have lost it amongst all the stuff there.
I did Loctite it back in. I had my car on my quickjack so I had lots of room after I removed the forward under cover.
Here is thread I made when I did mine 3.3TT - Trans flush and Both Differential oil change

^^Why the locktit? Does one locktite diff drain/fill plugs? I never have.

Perhaps because it's a part so rarely serviced, if at all, by most owners. 35 lb ft torque is about typical for that of a drain/fill plug.

To me, 20-30K miles is good interval for diff service.

For the 2.5, owner's manual says replace every 60 months/48K miles (whichever first), or for severe use every 36Kmi/72Kmi (l-sd/no l-sd, respectively.)

For 3.3 every 72 months/36Kmi, or for severe use, every 36Kmi/72Kmi (l-sd/no l-sd, respectively.)

Screw the owner's manual.. I'm sticking with 20-30Kmi interval. That's what i've done with past cars and my driving habits (2yrs, barely 10Kmi).

I did it mostly because of location. If it backs out and is lost it is a bad situation.. besides I have no issue getting it out again when the time comes.

IMG_20230806_105907637.webpdid the transfer case fluid on the 2018 Genesis G80 sport AWD, the engine and transmission sit about 4~inches further back to the rear of the car hence why the transmission brace thingy is to the front of the transfer case thus no need to remove it and support the transmission, it was an easy job.

Front differential is impossible

I think the dealer quotes 350 Canadian for front diff fluid change for the stinger...thats why I did it myself.
Not sure how different the G series is but the Stinger looks impossible until you find the fill...thats the hard part.
I could easily do it in less than an hour now that I know exactly where to look and how to access it.
