Bad Nightmare Oil Change

Did they drive the car on the parking lot without oil???

That picture of oil on the ground is right after the oil change. But very briefly they cut it on to get it to the lift and we still had half a quart which I was not happy about either.

I am not a mechanic, but i don't think starting an engine with half of quart even for a sec is safe. Someone more knowledgeable should comment on it.

Yup couldn’t agree more. One of the head service advisor was insistent on he’s seen engine “like that one” come in on one quart completely fine. So like I said gonna be bouncing around town today to see if anything is up.

Half a quart on the dipstick? Because if that's the case, your engine will be fine in so short a time. You still had a lot more oil than half a quart if any was showing on the dipstick.

There was none on the dipstick and half a quart when they emptied. But this was also after they towed there.

If this was me I'd make sure that the service order reflected the mishap, and then I'd save the print out. Furthermore I'd send a copy to Kia corporate so that everyone is well aware of the issue.

I've seen people leave a note on the steering wheel to the effect of "DO NOT START, NO ENGINE OIL"

I hope they didn't contribute to the premature engine wear by running the engine with no oil (½ quart is no oil), AFTER knowing.

Hope the damage is minimal, but it's impossible to know at this point. Nobody is going to be doing a teardown to inspect the wear on the main and rod journal bearings.

Nope.

The damage done normally will not present itself for a long long time.

It's simply premature wear.

The car may show xx,xxxx on the odometer,. But in reality, the engine has had a harder life than that.

Might never notice anything (hopefully)
Might have issues after 100,000 more miles.

The extend of the premature wear can only be estimated without a teardown... And a teardown isn't gonna happen.

I would much rather have an engine raced hard at a racetrack all day long with oil, vs run on the street for 30 mins without oil.


It's a crappy situation that the dealer never should have created.

Ya I watched them do everything and told them there probably wasn’t any oil left and instead of pushing it any further they cut it on and back in 5 ft and cut it off. It didn’t sound like anything is wrong and drove around more today. So we will just have to see what kind of pre-mature wear there is.

Might be time to get a lawyer involved. I don't know what the right reparation is for this type of negligence... Have them buy the car from you?

It is a 2021 I bought from them with only 17,xxx miles. I’m genuinely curious too as to what can be done to make this right. A few months ago I had received a trade in offer of what I purchased the car for and honestly if they bought it back for that I would not ask any questions and move on.

It's a shitty situation. I reviewed your OP, what's odd is no mention of the oil light (usually means low oil pressure) didn't come on. With no oil (1/2 qt out of what, 7 or 8 quarts?), I'd fully expect there to be no oil pressure and the light to come on.

If them voiding the sale, refunding in full will make you satisfied and they go for it, I'd say go for it. Given the current car market im sure they'll more than make up for it with the next sucker. Make sure you post the VIN so others will know to avoid the car.
