The connection for the fresh air feed for, IIRC, the vacuum system (brake booster and whatnot) uses a barb fitting with NPT threads. Instead of just cramming that into the plastic like nearly every aftermarket item ever made, they embedded a proper metal NPT female fitting into the elbow. That's expensive and complicated for the mold maker. Also surprising they didn't just make a plastic nipple - the other fittings are just molded plastic nipples on the elbow. This one would have to be particularly small, so it'd be really fragile. It's almost like they chose the complicated and good solution instead of the fast and iffy solution.
Completely separately, on the back side of each air box is a 2" hole. It comes with a rubber plug to close it (only cold air, quieter), or you can leave the plug off (might pull some engine compartment air, but will get some BOV noise).
