Idle Stop / Go a Premature Turbo Killer?

Can someone explain to me how the long term effects may be on the turbos when the idle stop shuts the engine down when you come to an immediate stop right after high engine RPM driving. Don't turbos need a bit of time to cool/spool down first.
I ask because after a short but spirited Sprint on the freeway, I pulled off at an exit and within 50 yards or so had to come to a stop at a red light. I know the engine would keep running if it was heated but what about the turbos? I'm assuming that it's already been addressed in the engineering of the ISG....

Based on an engineering explained YouTube video I once saw, I would say your concerns are valid.

Suggest deactivating the stop/go if you are driving hard.

Yeah, I agree. This was a very good question. I'd love to hear more thoughts on it... If it IS - or CAN BE an issue - there needs to be something programmed in that after being in high boost, the engine doesn't shut off for a pre-determined amount of time...

I’d like to think that the systems engineers planned for that, but since the manual doesn’t mention it as one of the criteria that prevents ISG from activating, better safe than sorry and just deactivate it at that time.

This is the first thing I disable when in my current M135xi .... not a fan at all. I'd often come to a slow stop at a traffic light and immediatly before it turns green, the engine powers off, or at a roundabout, waiting for a few seconds etc .... I get tons of useless, unneeded engine stops and starts in stop&go. To me that feature is completely useless and only present in cars to provide a better CO2 etc gas balance on paper. The moments, where it would have make sense (long wait before a train passing etc) are far fewer than the many useless stops.

Oh there's nothing wrong with bein environment aware, it's fairly silly to destroy your only life platform. But this feature doesn't really help achieving that in reality.

My last 3 cars all had Turbo's (last one was Twin Turbo as well) and all has ASS (or ISG) - never had a problem with any of them.

I'm sure the manufacturers would make sure they don't fail, especially Kia with a 7 year warranty.

Why not add a delay of oh, say 10-15 seconds of being at a full stop before the Idle Stop and Go kicks in and shuts the engine off?

Not sure where you got 7 year warranty from, but ALL Kia's have a 10 year/100,000 miles power train warranty.

When at a full stop, don’t press all the way down on the brake. You can apply medium pressure and it won’t auto shut off. You’ll quickly learn the amount of pressure that is needed to not activate it. It’s pressure activated.

You can come to a hard stop by fully mashing down on the brake, but ease up on it when you’ve come to a complete stop to prevent it from turning off the engine.

I only fully depress my brake when in Eco mode and know I’ll be at a stop for more than 10 seconds.

Every time you start the car... I'm getting pretty good at doing it and the heated steering wheel button at the same time... not sure what's going to happen when it's not cold here though...

Gotcha. Gotta do things currently in my STi. Twist knob to the right to hit sport #, push back on toggle to go rear bias AWD. So not a big deal.

UK get 7 Years / 100,000 miles (and/or unlimited mileage if under 3 years old!)

i think a 15 second delay every time would make it just about useless in most situations. but 10-15 seconds after being in high boost would make a lot of sense.

I have to badge in to park at my office, and ISG shuts the engine off for the 1.5 seconds it takes me to stick my arm out the window and swipe my badge. Same goes for parking, I pull in, and before I can change gears to park, it shuts the engine off, only to restart it so I can then shut it off again.

too bad the system can't learn when you want it to work and when you don't. where i live there are a lot of traffic lights and i stop and go alot. 15 seconds at a light is about the average so if the car is going to shut off in 10 or 15 seconds it's just going to turn off and back on again. seems like a waste. turning off just for your swipe in seems silly also. not sure what to do there. really to make this beneficial for people concerned about their turbos overheating the system should just avoid turning off if the car has been in high boost in the last minute or two.
