Idle Stop / Go a Premature Turbo Killer?

I don't think this is an issue anymore with the new turbo design. I'm 99% sure the turbos in the Kia engines are both oil and coolant cooled. I personally wouldn't worry about it.

Hmmmm.... use the lane departure camera to recognize traffic lights?

ISG only kicks in when certain conditions are met with the ICU. So if the turbos are showing as hot, the ICU should know this and keep the engine running so the fan can have the power to blow.

That is how I understand it.

This is interesting. Does anyone have more info on it?

Ya it worried me as well since i typically drive pretty hard. Im just used to turning it off before i plug my phone in on every drive.

I would think the ISG system takes more into account than purely fuel savings.

I leave it on for everyday commuting. It doesn't shut off at every stop, and at minimum it seems to take engine temperature and battery charge levels into account. I certainly hope turbo longevity is one of the factors too.

Are the turbos covered under the powertrain 100k mile warranty?

I've commented on this feature before, but since it's new to me, I keep forgetting to turn it off. And I've started to notice how it bothers me besides the fact that lifting from the brake and hitting the gas a bit (as if it weren't off, I guess), I get hit in the butt as it engages.

I do the HUGE majority if my driving in the city. Being able to take my foot off the brake and get some acceleration going at intersections, rapidly, is just how I'm used to driving. I imagine some of it is that I've spent decades in much lighter cars with less horsepower (though excellent weight-to-horsepower ratios). But it all just combines to being extra hesitation when I hit the gas.

All that said, if I'm relaxed and in no real hurry to get from A to B, am not at all frustrated/irritated by traffic and stupid drivers, I could live with it. I've proved that to myself. But I guess, as a driver, I'm moody. LOL So I really need to remember to shut the damn thing off!

Hate the ISG! Just got my Stinger last week and learning everything. When the car restarts under ISG, there's a noticable quiver from the engine and a small vibration from the floor board (very small). Call me ole school but I like to be in control of starting and stopping my engine. Wish there was a hack to reverse the ISG to off for default ... wishing. No big deal though. Habit will take over turning the ISG off before flight:thumbup:.

An enterprising person could find a way to hardwire the ISG off and leverage that button press for something else (exhaust cutout?).

OK this is all part of your preflight besides counting your tires making sure you don't have a flat check the oil and water start car and turn the damn thing off . I've heard that by 2020 all manufactures have to put this on their vehicles . So Quityourbitchen , fortunately we stinger owners are able to turn it off. From what I've read and heard there are a lot of other brands that you can't turn this off. I took three test drives before we got ours never really notice was not paying attention but after you have your own you notice it big time so if you missed it in your preflight you'll definitely remember the first stop that you make. I'm just glad were still able to operate the steering wheel and throttle , Lord knows Big Brother is trying to make that obsolete, and it seems like sooner than later , so drive it like you stole it . I'm starting to think that The derelict standing on the corner with a sign saying the end is near may be onto something . But you could rest a sure Jesus is coming and boy is he pissed , enjoy while you can .

Let's review the "pre-flight" check in modern cars in 2018:

1. get in
2. fasten seatbelt
3. check mirrors
4. put foot on the brake
5. start car
6. plug in phone
7. start your app/music/radio/Carplay/Android Auto
8. mount/place phone
9. change performance mode (Eco, Custom, Smart, Sport, etc.)
10. turn off ISG
11. put in reverse
12. check rearview camera
13. off you go!

Have I missed anything? Are we at that point that we can say, "sure, go ahead and add a few more things we have to/should do before heading out"?

No I think between yours and mine that pretty much covers it for the old-school way of doing things but today , it's where the hell is my key fob , get into the car push start and head on down the road where then they decide to do their pre-flight , then as Theay make the turn to get onto the freeway on ramp and stick their foot in it because there late ,they hear a strange noise and realize that they left their coffee and briefcase on top of the car . I'm sure if they look hard enough there's an app for that . Go know

At the Kia Stinger Experience today, I ask the product specialist about it. He said he would always disable for preference but the engineers have accounted for it. The car will not auto stop if the engine needs cooling fans and oil remains pressurized throughout engine.

It’s only there for Help with emissions and fuel economy ratings. That’s it.

I think you got my point. I have enough crap to do and am usually in a hurry. Part of why I hate the ISG - gotta wait for the engine to restart before I can press the gas, but since slipping the foot over quickly and punching the gas is the old, ingrained, and normal way of moving from a stop, you get kicked in the ass...

Hey I think I'm going to look in to who is the biggest manufacture of starters , and buy some stock. One bad day on the 405 in Los Angeles bumper-to-bumper would equal one year of starting your car.

i think a 15 second delay every time would make it just about useless in most situations. but 10-15 seconds after being in high boost would make a lot of sense.

Don't need a delay. It was already explained above that the driver controls it with brake pressure.
