Sunroof Rattle Fix

I pick up mine tomorrow after being in service hospital for a total of 4-5 weeks now.
The last hiccup was the workshop damaged the front fixed glass panel seal and it had to be replaced which meant more delay and the whole front windshield taken out and refitted. ‍♂️

all these horror stories, I'm glad for me it's just creaking like rubber to rubber seals instead of rattles. If I took it to the dealer and they kept screwing up, I'd probably take a loss (within reason) and give the car back. I did it with my old 335 when bmw couldn't get it right, lost $4k but at least I had piece of mind with my G37.

Yes, but the frustration is that the seemingly creaking seals do not stop creaking even when slathered in silicone grease. So, what is causing this incessant ticking/creaking? Or where do you need to apply grease to get it to stop?? Is this really a problem so complex no one at KIA or here can figure it out after such a long period of time???

Oftentimes it’s the most simplest issues to remediate. I think it’s just a function of design. I can live w/ some squeaks just not rattles, once I’m
Moving I don’t hear it. More so when I turn the radio on.

Glad you can live with it; some of us have better hearing and remember when our car did not make this sound, so it is not a pure design issue (every car does it 100% of the time).

I am glad you agree these are often simple fixes...just waiting for it to appear. I hope it is just laziness that has prevented a solution to date...

I don't know if it's better hearing, but this wouldn't be the first car I've owned that had some creaking. Granted, I don't have the rattles that some have and the road noise with 20 in wheels serves to drown this out.

Recorded it today after some of the similar noises showed up in my sunroof - watch here Cloudup

If it's the same nature as the TS's noise I may try fixing it the same way. Already tried greasing all over the place and even put some 3m's in some places it may contact there but it still ticks. More ticks than rattles, actually.

@Kamauxx how's the fix been to you? Still good?

Don't want to hear rattles? Get an exhaust. ;)

I kid, I kid. Washers seems to work for people.

So, I have the exact same ticking that occurs as soon as the car moves...even very slowly on smooth pavement. It is actually more noticeable at slow speeds than when there is a bunch of road and wind noise. It can be eliminated (or successfully masked) by closing the headliner on the sunroof.

If your car only exhibits the problem when you are above a certain speed, the dealer will claim it is detritus in the sunroof tracks that needs to be cleaned. They wasted my time and theirs going down that path, even though I open my roof so infrequently it was spotless inside. They then used some grease application around the entire roof area that accomplished zero.

I also have the completely unrelated problem of large creaks/snaps/pops that occur when the car has been left out in the sun (greenhouse effect of temperature differences presumably because it happens in cold or warm ambient temperatures). They are much more noticeable, but intermittent and usually goes away after the interior air of the car becomes conditioned closer to the temperature of the outside air. It is not affected by the headliner.

Either issue is 100% gone as soon as you open the sunroof even 1 mm.

They are both incredibly annoying because if it's cloudy and the headliner is closed, the car has no undue noises.

When I traded it in it was still silent.

Washers work for the lift gate thump. IIRC there is no place to install washers in the sunroof assembly (without disassembling something you probably shouldn't disassemble).

There is definitely nowhere accessible to add washers without pulling down the headliner. Kamauxx's fix is the easiest thing to try other than lubricating the seals. After that, trying some minor adjustments on the glass by loosening the bolts that attach the glass to the runners, that did nothing to help on my car though, nor did I find any reprieve with Kamauxx's solution (a mild attempt at it, anyway).

I already did that and it had zero effect on either problem in my car.
