(SOLVED, I was unaware MAP 1 only cranked about 30 more HP compared to nearly 100HP on other map. Waiting for spark plugs for MAP 2.)

Hey all,

Today I finally installed my JB4 tuner kit and followed the official guide instructions, and even hooked up the OBDII. (rigged through the door because my connection of the engine bay to the cabin was super taped up for some reason)

I went through all the precautions of locking the car and waiting 5 minutes until I plugged it in. I bought the Bluetooth enabled kit (pain in the ass to set up, why does it not come from the factory with the device installed??) and it successfully connected to my phone and I was able to read my RPM, etc, but wouldn’t read what gear I am in for some reason.

I have not yet installed the aftermarket gapped spark plugs (still shipping) and have not installed the fuel wires either because I didn’t want to puncture a OEM cable just yet.

When I got it out on the road, I felt no difference at all. It still shifts at 6,000 RPM instead of 6,800, what it is set to shift at, and the boost PSU is definitely not changed, it never goes over 15-16 PSI. I drove for over 20 minutes with constant pulls seeing if I just had to wait for it to kick in, and still nothing.

Even in MAP 1, I should still be feeling a difference and the shift red line and psi should be increased right? And there’s no way I got the two inputs to the ECU wrong, because the car wouldn’t be working at all if it wasn’t the right ones correct?

Please help, I want to get my $700 worth of this product and have heard so much good about it.

Here is a log of my run. Does not look right at all.

If your seeing over 14 psi then it’s making a difference. Your taking 30hp and 50 torque without fuel wires so you won’t feel much. Shift points are not revised. Add fuel wires and advise.

If you need tuning help you'll need to post the CSV log, not a photo of it, so we can check the details.

If you don't want to puncture the fuel wires, get the adapters - either from ecko04 or BMS. Plug-and-play. Also, map1 is described "decent". map2 is where you see the real changes. Wait for your plugs, don't get impatient and mess up stuff like someone else did. My grommet was also kind of taped up, it took me quite some time. Plus, allow a bunch of time for plugs - some people on here say they can do it in 30 seconds for the obd2 cable, 45 minutes for plugs. My times were more like 15-20 minutes, 2+ hours. Relax, wait for the new plugs, get the fuel wire PNP adapters, hook it all up and enjoy. It's a BEAST in 2nd/3rd gear on map2.

Took me 4 hours for the plugs. It was rough. When the time comes to replace it, I'm gonna have my dealership do it

Did not know this! I thought stock PSI was 16-17. Thanks for the info.

I believe it is actually now working, I can feel a difference between map 0 and map 1. not much, but there is definitely more power in map 1, and it feels like it revs and gets off the gas much harsher, which is great! I was unaware that map 1 was only 30hp so it wouldn't be that much of a difference compared to stock. Thanks for the help!

Thank you so much for all this info, I wish it was more readily available on BMS's website, installing it was a bit harder than I thought it would be, due to this being the first car I've ever "tuned" and I didn't know exactly how to do everything and where to plug stuff into, where not to put things, and where to seal others. I will wait to install my plugs before I start ripping on map 2, thank you also for the great information and tips. I went testing it out a little bit more, and it seems like I can actually tell there is a diffrence, so I think it is working. I guess 30hp isn't that significant. Thanks again!

Plugs and fuel wires should make a huge difference...

I just received my JB4 and really want to get it installed, but have not changed plugs yet. Will I be ok on map 1 with 93 or should I disable to map 0 until I get plugs changed? Thanks Rob

Keep at it, next time you will get it down to two hours. A smile on your face after doing it yourself is better than the frown you’ll have after forking over hundreds to the stealership knowing you could have done it yourself.

Some people get away with it on map1 others end up smoking a plug or worst case a coil, although a coil is rare.

Thanks I will just wait. Just a suggestion you should offer the socket swivels with the spark plug kit.

Plugs took me two hours the first time. 2nd time 40 minutes. Save your cash and a run to the dealer. They just cause headaches and damage.

Oh, I'm doing it myself. Got plugs kit from bms. I cheaped out and ordered a few different socket angle adapters online and I do not have them yet. I didnt think I was going to get the JB4 until march. Oh well hopefully the adapters are here soon.

If you havent read the sparkplug thread in here yet i advise you find it as there is some good info there.

Plugs and fuel wires should make a huge difference...

Hey Terry,

So this is a follow-up, I finally got around to replacing my spark plugs and installing the fuel wires. I first ran on map 0 to make sure everything was fine, and it was. So I then went up to map 2 and felt a slight increase in power, but the gauge cluster says it's still shifting at ~6k-6.5k (rarely) and boost psi never goes over 13 psi. I definitely feel a difference overstock, but why am I not seeing consistent 16+ psi and 7k rpm shifts?

What was boost on map0

10-12 is what I see on mine stock. I notice pedal isn’t 100% for most of it. Seeing 99%. Might be an issue?

Update to v13 firmware so we can see gear and other data.

Normal shift points are around 6200rpm. Boost seems OK but again shorter lower gear runs so can't really compare it.

I can’t update my firmware. Every time I try it says that it is failing. I am following your instructional video exactly as it says how to, with the vehicle ignition turned on and engine off, connected to the JB4, and went to the update firmware section, selected the Stable version for the Kia, and click update. It goes till about 20/309 and says it fails, repeatedly, then ends all together.

I am stuck without a functioning device and had to unplug the device and re plug in the stock ports to get home. This kind of stuff is ridiculous. I’ve had so many issues with the JB4 and the unsatisfactory support that I have been given, not to mention the fact that I had to scour the internet looking for updated information on how the new JB4 works vs the old one. You guys really need to have a better installation guide and make it much easier to find and understand. Not even including any sort of visual instructional guide in the box of a product is unheard of. This isn’t the kind of product nor product support I expect in a $700 product.

Please help me with getting this fixed as soon as possible
