My biggest Stinger Problem!

My biggest problem is with the radio. It sometimes does not tune on. I have to turn off ,then turn back on the engine, for the radio to start working. There is no fix for it, that I know of. Kia service is still looking into it. Even with that problem I still love the car.
One more little thing. With all the electronics there is no way to monitor the battery voltage on the instrument panel.

I have 3 problems.
1. Why the hell didn't the US stinger come with auto-start and diagnostic readouts from the UVO app? The US version of UVO is practically useless. I mean.. I want to be able to set a auto-start schedule and have preset A/C scheduled so it's ready when i get outside.

2. Launch Control - Well... it's a joke. Cant build any boost off the line. (without doing the brake switch mod) AWD should be dominating the RWD on the streets, period. Slingshot advantage should be there, but it's not... Whoever was in charge of putting together the LC is an a**hole.

3. FCA (Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist) - Why cant I set this to be turned off by default? I haven't needed someone else to hit the brakes for me ever, not trying to start now. As a matter of fact, this feature (I feel) almost killed me. I'm not an erratic driver, however sometimes you want/need to make a gap, a gap with plenty of room that's closing at a slow pace.... However when attempting to make the gap activates FCA... Let's just say that at that point I was scared of the car lol.

Otherwise, I love it! It reminds me of my childhood, buying, building, modding Dodge Stealth TTs. Similarities in the platforms.

This is a true story. This car doesn't like a**hole-lane-changes.

I've never met an actual GT car enthusiast that obeys traffic laws 100% of the time. Someone like that has got to exist somewhere, but i bet it isnt here. We're all stinky a**holes at some point.

My biggest problem is keeping it from going way faster than the speed limit. She just wants to run fast.

Hmmm. I wouldn’t exactly say that the Stingers handling is crappy. In fact, it has excellent grip, response, and feel when being hustled along a curvy road. My specific complaint is that body control is crappy. That is, the shocks/springs do not keep the body from moving up and down excessively. What’s more the body never moves up and down as a whole over irregularities. I can clearly feel the front bouncing, or the rear bouncing. Sometimes both the front and rear will have a bit of excess motion.
GM is a big proponent of flat ride, tuning that makes a car take irregularities as a whole by carefully tailoring the suspension calibration to have both the front and rear suspension complete their reaction to bumps and dips simultaneously. Kia knows how to do it sufficiently too, as the Optima is quite good in this regard.

On these RWD Stingers GT2, I can distinctly feel the front and rear suspensions doing their own thing in reaction to the road surface. There’s even a bit of diagonal body motion going on too, where one front corner goes down and one rear corner goes up (or vise verse). The car can also rock side to side a bit in response to road surface too. That’s why people feel the ride has improved when they add sways or springs, it takes away some of the movement (on all axis) that makes the car feel uncomposed.

I am a ride and handling fanatic. So I am more picky, and perhaps observant, than most.
Now that I think about it, I’ve seen this tuning from Hyundai/Kia before. My sister had a 2006 Tiburon SE in college. It had the Stinger GT2 RWDs same ride motions and general feel, but did not have the grip and response of the Stinger.

I make a big deal of the GT2 RWD body control (or lack thereof). But it’s really my only complaint with the entire car. I’ve seen people here repeatedly state that they felt the Stingers body rigidity may not be up to par, because of the hatchback design. I’ve had aftermarket coils on my car and can say that with them, the cars structure felt every bit as solid (if not more so) than most other cars. The structure is wonderfully stiff. But the OEM suspension tuning masks that a bit.

I think the RWD GT2 cornering behavior is great. It’s the ride in a straight line that is too bouncy/floaty over road imperfections, dips, and rises. Again, I know I’m picky, but even the Optima, Camry, Accord, Malibu, have more body control just rolling down a straight road. So Stinger certainly has room to improve.

Then again, some people don’t mind or even notice a bit of float or bounce. Its simply not on their radar.
I’m like that about body roll, it doesn’t generally bother me in any car. I guess I’m just not sensitive to that. I’m always shocked when I hear people say the Stinger has too much body roll, because I find it quite good in this area.

I am definitely gonna schedule a drive of a AWD GT2 and see what that’s like. I have yet to see one of you guys have a complaint. Only the RWD GT2 owners seem to share my sentiments. You AWD owners make me want to see what it actually feels like.

I have a 19k miles in my GT1 and although I do feel it is a bit bouncy for my tastes in comfort, I've found that the switching to sport makes it much less bouncy w/out going too stiff (something I can live with for a DD). Having said that, I've always had coilovers in every performance car I've had (except for my BMW 325 which I went with a spring/koni shock setup) and I'm enjoying not feeling the jarring shock everytime I hit a CA pothole. But a Camry bounce, it is not!! LOL. I bought my dad a used 2000, my uncle has an 06, and my cousin has a new one - no way is the stinger as bouncy as those. Except for the new one, that one felt decent for about 6 months and then quality just got real crappy as if the shocks are so stiff it felt like the car was about to blow up at the smallest pothole. (it's now on coilovers, so pretty good)

After what I thought was just light application of right foot to get around Pam/Becky/Martha/etc in her rolling sadness called a minivan.. I think I'm doing 5 over to pass. I look down, first number on the speedo is a 9. Whoops.

I initially disliked FCA, and it has activated needlessly a few times, but I've adjusted my driving a little and it's somewhat comforting to know it'll be there if I were to miss something truly unexpected and dangerous..

For a less bouncy/floaty ride, I've set up a custom mode where I selected sports suspension with comfort engine and transmission for cruising on the highway. I just wish the car could stay in custom mode and not switch back to comfort every time I start it ?
Also, I've had a couple of occasion where the FCA (not to be confused with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles :D) came on when attempting to pass slower cars, even though there was more than enough space between the front of the car and the ones I decided to pass, but it only beeped loudly and flashed an icon on the dash a few times without applying the brakes. Maybe I was lucky ?

You were lucky! I immediately disable it when I jump into the car

I think it works on the difference in speed of your car and the one in front. If your closing speed is quick then it will alert. I’ve had it happen a couple of times but only every the audible warning and icon on the screen, the brakes have never applied.

She just wants to run fast.
I have a similar problem, especially at the lights, she slips into sport mode and off she goes, ahead of the other cars. I try my best not to go over the speed limit but she gets to the speed limit super fast.( of course it has nothing to do with me being a lead foot ) she's like a wild horse, spirited ;)

I prefer when she slips into something more comfortable, like COMFORT mode..;), but she got a mind of her own , and at the lights she always feels abit sporty, which is why she slips into SPORT mode, but in the Maccas Drive Thru she slips into ECO mode , thinking she will save me some money, when on suburban roads and freeways she's very clever in SMART mode, wary of red light and speed cameras, and finally in CUSTOM mode , she let's me do whatever I want with her.;):):rofl:

What is this ECO mode you speak of? Sport, shifter slapped over into the manual gate. I don't think I've turned the drive mode selector to the left since I've gotten the car.

Australian Stinger GT has the standard 5 drive modes , SMART , ECO , COMFORT , SPORT and CUSTOM, all selectable via the turn knob in the centre console, why is there no ECO mode in the US spec Stingers ?

He's being a smart ass, as he has no use for ECO mode..

US stingers have those same five drive modes.

Guess the joke didn't translate well over the interwebz. But in all seriousness I don't see much difference in MPG between ECO and Sport especially if most of the time is spent shifting yourself. I almost feel like I'm just lugging the car a lot more in Eco whenever I'm trying to get around someone because the revs are so low.
