My biggest Stinger Problem!

For me it's the vibrating brakes from pad deposits which I'm going to have the dealer look at in the next month. Also I hears creaks from the car while driving over uneven pavement which gives me the impression the chassis is not stiff enough. Has anyone noticed that installing the underbody bracing has helped with that?

Your entire statement.

Do you like the bounce/float?
Or do you find that there is none there?

I specifically stated for the RWD GT2, because those are the only model of Stingers I have ever driven.
each one has been far bouncier than even a current Camry, Regal, or Lacrosse.
I’ve recently been playing around with the coding of the Electronic Suspension Computer.
Doing so, made it very clear to me that the AWD Stinger has a distinctly different calibration.

So as an AWD owner, your experience may be better than what we RWD owners get in this regard.
But everything I said is spot 100% accurate about the RWD GT2 models I have driven.

Your AWD doesn’t bounce? Even in a straight line at constant speed, these GT2 RWD have wayyyyy too much vertical up and down movement in the front and rear suspensions when bumps and dips are encountered.
Mill have to go and drive an AWD, so I can see how those ride in comparison, as you are not the first (AWD) person whose disagreed with my opinion of the RWD shock damping.

All of the Stingers have their own tuning. Base RWD, Base AWD, GT RWD, and Gt AWD all are tuned differently. None of them are them same.

I contemplated the rwd before I capitulated to Michigan. The one I drove on our wonderfully versatile like roads was not bouncy. I will admit that the staggered AWD car feels much more planted, but I would almost bet that it is just a byproduct of it being AWD.

On our roads, here in Arkansas, these RWD GT2’s are constantly bobbing up and down. It takes a truly smooth road for the car to settle down into a flat ride.

I test drove about 4 GT2 RWD before buying mine, all were sadly the same.
On the upside the GT2 RWD suspension excels at resisting brake dive, squat, and body roll. It’s only fault is allowing too much body movement and pitch during the straight portions of the road.

Michigan is NOTORIOUS for the lack of road quality. Literally zero of our roads are flat, straight or marginally maintained. Are your roads really that bad? My 04 Mustang GT would hop on even tar strips.

Our roads are decent. Too many potholes, though. Mostly, we lack the glass smooth roads I enjoy when I trip to Memphis, Texas, etc. Yeah, it’s that hopping action I can’t stand. That being said, I am quite picky about ride quality. Stiffness, firmness, and even a bit of harshness, I can take. But I’m instantly irritated by any sensation of bounce.

You’ve got me curious. I don’t particularly want AWD, but If the AWD rides level, without the bounce of the RWD cars, I may have to trade this one for a new AWD variant.

I installed KWV3 Coilovers and wow, the car became everything I expected (and more). Unfortunately, my KWs arrived defective and the ride quality quickly deteriorated to the point that I sent them back. When they were working though, the ride was sublime.

Gotta figure out my next move. In any event the RWD ride motions are too excessive and I won’t continue with this car in stock form. I’ll have to correct it or get rid of it.

My sunroof noise started with creaks over uneven pavement. Specifically, I would only hear it when I was in parking lots or on brick paved roads like in certain older (downtown/historic) parts of cities.

Hopefully you aren't in the early stages of a noisy headache.

As for the brakes, Kia will turn the rotors for you under warranty (they did mine just out of warranty, as a "courtesy) but beware it will continue to happen as long as you use their OEM pads. If they turn them for you I would suggest you upgrade the pads as soon as you get the car home from the dealership, and go out and properly bed the new ones.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the ride of a new STI

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the ride of a new STI

I’ve never driven an STI, WrX, or imprezza.
The last Subaru I drove was a 2006 Legacy. I was quite pleased with that car.

I have heard that the STI’s could be quite bouncy. They mentioned the suspension oscillations and also blamed springy seat cushions for that cars bounce. I don’t recall if they were talking about the latest cars or the previous generation.

On the other hand, I recently drove a 2019 Accord Sport...
That car was so level and composed that you would swear it had some kind of active suspension installed. No matter what the road surface was doing below the car, the body seemed to remain perfectly level fore/aft and side to side. Additionally, the ride was silky smooth on 19 inch wheels with no hints of impact harshness at all. That car surprised (and delighted) with minimal body roll, sports car quick steering and an overall refined demeanor. It is so good that it makes the Stinger feel a bit rough around the edges and unfinished. If it had Stinger levels of power, I’d own one right now. Not too fond of the Accords push button shifter either.

That being said, manufacturers do seem to think vehicles in premium sporty segment don’t need well damped rides any more. My E90 3 Series was bouncy in the rear. The F30 3 series is bouncy/floaty all around. My F10 535i Msport (with Electronic shocks) was floaty in the front.

My E60 535i Msport was just about perfect though, despite runflat tires.

The Stinger just irks me, especially given that the Optima SX loaner car I drove had better body control and ride motions.

I can’t really think of any legitimate complaints of the Stinger Outside of NVH and suspension tuning. Everything else is superb.

TLDR the new STI is super oversprung. They shake more than Michael J Fox

Lol!

The weekend that I bought my Stinger, I met a new STI owner.
We talked for a bit about our new cars. He didn’t mention the ride quality, but he did say something that caught my attention.

He said his new STI had very firm steering feel.
I wish Stingers EPS were a fair bit heavier.

Was your previous car an STI?

No, I did come from star world though. I almost got one over the stinger. I couldn't stomach the giant wang! 10 years ago no problem, but kinda hard to take an adult seriously with that wing. The ride is H A R S H! It took me some time to get a good feel for the stinger steering, but i rather like it. I wish it was proportional like an M5, RS Audi or Panamera, but hey those are giant money cars.

My *only* Stinger problem is I don't have one yet.

Boo this man!

I haven't received a speeding ticket in 20 years. I've owned my GT2 for 3.5 months and have received 4 speed camera violations lol. Never really bad...6-10 over. Luckily they don't count as moving violations against your record here but they cost me 35 bucks a pop! Should probably stop daily driving in sport mode lol. Fun car!!

Today for the first time, my TPMS stopped sending information to the LCD screen. The "Drive to Show" screen stayed on. Annoying. We'll see if sitting overnight resets it or not.
That happened to me once. It was fine the next time I drove the car
Yesterday afternoon, I noticed that the TPMS sensors were not sending to the LCD screen. It just said, "Drive to display". I hoped that a night would reset it, but this morning it still wasn't showing me the psi in my tires. Along about rush hour (forget which town) I put the drive mode into Eco and the transmission into "D". When I looked at the Tire Pressure LCD screen again, voila!? it was working. WTH!? Why did it quit in the first place: and why would changing drive modes affect the Tire Pressure interface with the TPMS sensors in the tires? Of course, no answers to any of these maddening, modern, high tech mysteries. HEH!

I have found that switching between drive modes seems to affect the electronics sometimes. I know running in smart mode when it switches between eco and comfort the radio volume kinda lowers then returns to the normal. Not every time but enough times I noticed it.
