Engine Lifter Noise

Did you get any response on what is causing it? I have the same issue as I've had the car for almost 10 months and didn't hear this noise until recently.

Hi, Kia ended up having my car for 7 weeks. Had to remove a whole engine, inspect the head of the engine and ended up instaling a new short engine. I'm picking up my car in two days. Took them almost 4 weeks to find the issue. Something with pistons. As soon as I have an exact report of the issue, I'll let you know.

They didn't give me a whole new engine, but only parts, I think they kept a few main parts. As soon as i have a report I'll keep you posted.

My previous car - 2004 mazda 3 - ended with 460,000 kms - never a single valve adjustment in it's long life. It uses shim under bucket style lifters.

All DI engines tick. Cam driven fuel pumps tick too. Unless you have harshness or an arrhythmic tick ignore it.

Do all Stingers have a very loud, What I believe is lifter noise, on cold starts? Mine does. It last 30 seconds to a minute and sound like a diesel truck. It's quiet on warm starts. Kind of embarrassing considering what I paid for the car. DOn't hear it in an Audi S5 Sportback. I understand the noise happens because kia uses solid lifters instead of the hydraulic lifters like most manufacturers? Anyone know have this same issue and can confirm the cause? I went to the dealer and they said it was normal. I had them cold start a new one siting on the lot and it sounded the same.

I have the same noise but I found that a quick 200rpm rev the noise quiets down significantly in the summer. In the winter the noise stays a bit longer. I hate to say it but the noise reminds me I brought a KIA.

Most manufacturers don't even print paper service manuals anymore. All service information is electronic and available to dealership techs through a manufacturer login.

There are 3rd party service information sources like Alldata or Mitchell on Demand. I have access to both through work. You can buy a subscription to just one vehicle. I'm not sure how much it costs but a trip to either website will let you know. The only problem is that Kia won't likely release much service info to these companies until the car is out of warranty. Right now on Alldata, they don't even list the Stinger at all. Initially, all they are likely to release is basic maintenance information which would probably be handy.

I just checked with Alldata, and the latest model year for Kia is 2015, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect the Stinger showing up in 2022 or 2023.

I'm noticing that as a trend. Most 3rd party support companies only updated to 2015 across most/all manufacturers - and that's going back to 2016. Check out the support matrices for any of the aftermarket scan tools.
Makes me wonder if something changed in the industry in 2016......

Any updates on how your car is running now with all the replacements and time in service? I'm at the beginning of that road I think. They had my car in overnight and want to keep it another night because they "think" they hear something with timing chain or VVT. Will be doing another cold start later today hooked up to the computer to record how it starts. Making me nervous! Thanks for any info!

Update: Nothing new on my ticking issue...other than it may take a little longer by now to go away. I have a good recording of it when the car was new (Nov 18). By now I have 36,000 miles on it and I'll record it again soon, once the weather cools down and the engine gets a little colder overnight so I have apples to apples conditions to last years recording.
I'll report back then.

Yes my stinger does the same. On startup there is a sound similar to a tappet noise which disappears after about 30 seconds. I spoke to the service department about it and they told me it was the fuel pump and was normal. Shows how much they know.. If you touch the accelerator ever so lightly rev the engine, the noise disappears. I doubt if there is a solution. It is interesting that the BMW makes the same if not louder noise. Also, the chief design engineer for the Stinger was head hunted from his position with BMW. again, interesting...

So they ended up keeping my Stinger for about 3 1/2 weeks. They replaced the fuel pump and it still makes the same noise. We mutually agreed the issue was documented at the dealer for any future issues that might require warranty on same issue.

My engine also has significant tappet-like noise on cold start. It also goes away on ~30 seconds or with a small amount of throttle

There's tons of internet threads about this on various Kia forums, it appears to be common for the Lambda 3.3 (all variants). There also seems to be some disagreement as to whether it's the fuel pump or timing chain tensioner.

I've tried to pinpoint it with a mechanic's stethoscope and to me it seems to be coming from under the valve cover. I'm not convinced it's the fuel pump though, since the frequency seems to be too low. There's three peaks on the fuel pump cam lobe instead of one for the valve lobes. Since the cam turns at half the engine speed; at 1200 RPM idle, you should head 600 ticks-per-minute if it's a valve tappet, or 1800 ticks-per-minute if its the fuel pump.

I went ahead and left it at the dealer overnight for them to take a look. They told me its working as intended, but I definitely wanted it on record in case the engine shits the bed in 50K. I may try another dealer for a second opinion.

Bumping an old thread - I just purchased a 2020 GT base Stinger and am loving it so far. I am a rookie when it comes to cars so apologies if these are dumb questions. I only have 2-3 gripes regarding the vehicle but something I wanted to inquire about is the engine noise. I am inclined to believe that the ticking noise (1st video) is normal as turbos have a tapping/clicker sound as referenced earlier in this thread.

However, I also noticed that my engine is making an interesting whirring noise from time to time when it's in park or idle, which lasts for about 20 seconds then it whirs down as heard in the 2nd video.

Is this also the turbo or is something FUBAR? Any insight would be appreciated, tia!
