Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

and suggested I wait for the new release then contact her again for the free update.

Big improvement. Some of us earlier customers wasted our updates because despite specifically asking about missing features like Bluetooth messaging, KIA refused to acknowledge they were going to add it (or any other changes) or when the next update would be released. Many of us got upgraded (used up our courtesy upgrade) to 12 just before 12.5 came out. This despite KIA delivering our vehicles to us with out of date software and maps.

Wonder what this new update will bring, aside from the maps.

Hopefully it will finally fix USB music sort problems, add better texting functionality (similar to Mazda or Subaru), include programming to use our cameras for speed limit integration (like Subaru, Volvo, Infiniti, etc.) instead of the perpetually out of date or missing map-based ones, etc., etc. There is no shortage of fixes and improvements needed. Don't hold your breath...

I'm curious too to see what the upcoming update will bring. Maybe if we keep in touch here and with the Premium Team they'll begin to understand what it is that the consumer really wants. Like a heated Forward Collision Avoidance camera/radar sensor cover for when it freezes or snows. (Sorry about that. I know this isn't the right discussion blog for that but I just had to get it off my chest.) o_O

What problems with USB sorting? (the only fix I really want is for the media system to stop inserting c. one second pauses between seamless tracks on my albums; drive me nuts)

The system is so stupid that if you pick music in anyway other than by "Files" it plays albums in alphabetical order instead of the proper order (yes even when the file names have the sort order numbers in them). So, pick by Album (a normal expectation to be able to do that), and it won't play properly.

By the way, all players insert the pause between tracks. You have to rip the music in a specific manner to prevent that if it bothers you. Google it.

I have (or drive) multiple cars with radar and camera-based avoidance systems. None work in snow/ice. That's why all the autonomous car testing is done in the desert. Too many people would be killed, or standing around waiting for Spring, if they tried it in real-world conditions. Basically, any time the weather is really bad (even fog and heavy rain disable most systems) and you could use some help from nannies, they don't work. When any competent driver should not need them, in broad daylight in warm weather, they work perfectly. Why? Because they are designed to help distracted driving morons and people stuck in incessant traffic caused by urban sprawl. That's the market opportunity and the place the technology can help the most. It will be a long time before it will be of any use in the conditions that actually cause anxiety for competent drivers.

Doesn't the map software make lots'O money with advertising the hotels, restaurants, gas stations etc -- you would think they would offer it for free so advertisers would get their updated message to consumers. Otherwise, we will be going with other media and it won't be long before someone comes up with a work around like in boat navigation SD cards. BTW has anyone looked at the file format on the SD card? Is it the same file as other navigation programs?

It works so badly and is so clunky to use, people just give up and use Android Auto or Apple Carplay. Unfortunately, KIA botched that, too, for those of us lucky enough to not live in the USA. We have wireless charging (great convenience feature), but then if you want to use maps or apps that are properly designed and can be used without major distraction while driving, you have to plug-in to the USB port to do it. Where is Bluetooth Auto/Carplay!?!?! Luckily, we have telematics in the car, too, which has a button on the rearview mirror for Google search. Unlike the ridiculously inept and clunky nav-based search and voice control, the Google search always properly recognizes what I ask it and what I want is almost always the first choice or within the first couple of options on the screen (as you would expect from Google). If I didn't have this capability, I would just not use the nav for anything beyond a known address point to point nav. And even that it is not particularly good at.

I refuse to use Android Auto because a) I don't want or need cords when I have wireless charging; b) I already have music plugged in to the USB port, so what am I supposed to do with that?; c) I do not need nor should I be distracting myself with various apps while driving--already paid $$$ for the one app that is needed--a nav system that should work properly and not need to be replaced by a bring-my-own-nav that I have to pay data charges or use up pre-paid bandwidth.

...AND why not just buy a last years's update on eBay or Craig's list :) So if you update, sell your last year's SD and cut cost

Does anybody know why I can't just clone someone's new updated SD card -- probably any HDD clone program would work?

My issue so far with Android Auto is that it doesn't hook into the HUD. I like using the built in nav because it goes on the HUD. Admittedly I haven't used either very much so far, so my opinion may change with more use, but that's where I'm at so far. Of course the Android environment for searching is better, because Google has spent years working on it and perfecting it. I also don't like having the phone plugged in to use it, but I don't use USB music either, or even music from my phone.

Also, my US Spec GT2 has wireless charging, but I don't use that either, mostly because I have a new phone that still holds a charge long enough so I don't need to charge my phone very often yet. I do hate that the nav is locked out while driving, not because I want to use it while driving, but because I can have a passenger operate it while I'm driving. Or if I'm stopped at a stop light it won't let me do anything. Usually it will let you work with it as long as you're not moving, but having to be in park is beyond that.

The firmware for the HU can be updated from an SD card with newer software on it, but that capability isn't of much use if the card has an older/obsolete version.

The maps are locked to a specific car/HU, so aren't useable anywhere else.

I totally agree Marc. What I've discovered though, is that as the snow builds up on the front facing sensor cover it begins to spread across the grille more rapidly, blocking the flow of air through the grille. Heating coils like those in the rear windows could help alleviate the issue. Here in Northern Nevada, we have very little moisture so no fog and very little rain. Usually some snow in the winter and plenty of snow heading over and into the mountains to Tahoe.

They are running a survey for ideas about the future of the infotainment system: New Navigation Features Survey I suggest all of us go through and at the end comment about wanting the firmware updates for free without the map updates.

I came across this because I got an email about updating my maps but it seems like the software is still at v12.5 but the underlying map version may have changed.

Thanks - interesting to see what they are considering. Some useful proposed features, but also some real duds, for me at least.

I did leave a comment as well.

The only feature I want is an option to not include it with the vehicle.
