2018 Stinger Recall - Wire Harness May Be Damaged By Fender

Gentlemen... this recall isn't going to start until the 20th

They aren't going to know about it until then though... You can't expect them to resolve a recall that hasnt been put into the vin's yet.

I didn't really bring it up with them with the hopes of getting a fix on the spot. I just wanted to talk about it. It was all over the news (I received texts from multiple people to tell me about it when the story broke) and there have been official documents about it released by the NHTSA. What's off-putting to me is the fact they don't, at the very least, have the same knowledge as we do about the situation. Like no heads up from Kia to alert them of the impending issue? Or is it some sort of company policy that they can't talk about it until recalls are officially "official"?

Believe it or not most service writers aren't trolling forums or the news for this information. A TON of logistics goes into organizing these fixes and manufacturers need to do their due diligence to make sure that the fix is correct, well thought out, and has the necessary supply chain to accomplish before putting any information out there. Otherwise, if things change, they have false info floating around.

Being that the 20th is the start date for the campaign, that is porbably when mail notifcations go out to owners, and consequently the recall loads in whatever system they have. That gives them time to get parts and prepare for the wave of people coming in, while also still servicing all of their other models.

this may come as a surprise, but we care a lot more about our particular car model than they do. We're going to be a lot more up to date with anything Stinger related than someone working at a Kia dealership.

Got my recall letter in the mail this week.
I had mine in the shop yesterday for a few things, mostly re-badging, but also the fading stereo. Before I left for them to work on it, I mentioned the wiring harness recall. They hadn't gotten word yet that they were okay to look at. Three hours later, it popped up on my account so they looked at it.

Does your VIN pop up as an affected vehicle on either the NHTSA or Kia Recall websites? I was 99% sure my car would be getting flagged but so far both sites tell me no recall. I am out of town until the 1st week of January so I have no access to my mail and was going to take care of the fix at the local dealer here in Virginia where I'm currently at.

A Canadian car would be found on the Transport Canada site - not NHTSA.

Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database

They have the recall listed, but checking for specific VINs redirects to a KIA Canada lookup page. Searching on my VIN (build date Feb/2018) simply comes up with a contact link for Kia Canada - no specifics if the recall is applicable. I'll wait a few weeks to see if I get a recall notice, if not I'll follow up with them.

Shiiii.. You right. Didn't even realize you are from the north before asking. Anyone in the US able to check and see?

Mine says "0 Recalls Associated With This VIN".

Same thing mine says, even though everything I've read in the recall documents leads me to believe a fix is required for me. Not that it's particularly worrisome or pressing to me, just something that will eventually need to get checked off the list

Mine shows up now.

My previous check of my vin on their site did not come back that my car was impacted. But today, it shows up.

Another app actually checked and emailed me (not Kia).

But checking the owners site today, sure enough... my car is now impacted.

Yep. I don't need to make an appointment. I'm about due for an oil change / maintenance. And I have that 19mm Eibach rear sway bar coming. When it gets here, I'll do the oil change, wire harness check, and sway bar installation all at once. :D

How much is your dealer charging to install? And, we're looking forward to your before/after review. :)

Me too.

The job is 2 to 2.5 hours, so I am informed by those who know. :D I don't know what hourly rate Jerry Seiner charges. I'll find out, won't I.

Just got my letter in the mail today and also have the alert in the kias owner website mentioned above.

Now I wonder how long it'll take the dealers to have the shielding / cover or if the delay was to ensure they would be readily available.

For those of you that want to identify and fix the issue yourselves, I've attached a .pdf of the Service Bulletin including pictures and repair steps.
