Interesting Discoveries Thread (Good or Bad)

Thats one thing I never really did....abuse tires and wheels with curbs........the rest of the vehicle...well thats a sad sad story.....dings dents,crashes....wow you name it I did it!!! but the tires an wheels came out fine!!
You're describing your "new" Stinger as if it has already passed on!?

I didn't have curb rash on any of my previous vehicles either. For some reason, the Stinger is hard for me to park confidently: so low, and from there so wide and sloping down away out of sight. Hell, you can't see anything beyond the forward end of the faux air vents! Half the car is "out there", even "way out there". It's the longest damned hood I have driven since our '76 Monte Carlo; but at least that one you could still SEE to the end of. Heh! I never rashed any rims or hubcaps until this car. The irony is galling. But I try not to think about it anymore. I haven't made contact with a curb since May 26th.

Every car I've owned has been fairly low with a long, disappearing front end, but I had little or no problem getting them snugged up against a curb without incident. (Pulling into the garage without hitting the back wall was another story.) Well, maybe I did scrape the white walls on my Mustang once or twice. (I'd forgotten I ever had a car with white walls. Gosh, I'm old!)

So I don't think the sloping hood is the problem. It's the visibility, and the width, since this car doesn't narrow at the very front like my others did. I haven't curbed the Stinger yet, but sometimes I do find myself 2 feet from the curb—evidently overcompensating, since you guys all have me worried, and since low profile tires have so much more to lose. And I'd LOVE a set of curb feelers if they didn't look so geriatric!

"Geriatric", that's it exactly! Only old folks in floating boats had them when I was a kid. Bleh!

I don't have quite two feet between my rims and the curb, but sometimes it is close to that. Sometimes I have just looked at how much space I left and gotten back in started it up and backed out and pulled in closer. Ridiculous behavior but necessary if I don't want to risk a door from the next stall over (I always pick end spots to cut the chances of a door ding by fifty percent).

No ,lol everything I've driven since!!

as for the stinger, you are right, unless you have a ''feel'' for what you are driving then it's up to divine province.I'm not tooting my horn,I have just driven many vehicles in my life so far......most very large trucks (semi's).....where the mirrors are your best freind...back up camera(s)...forget i!As for cars banged 'em up pretty good, earned me the nickname crash in high school. But since then and a bunch of points on the license. I learned safer is better and cheaper.

Yup, my friends have laughed at me riotously for performing that exact little routine, but on the street, not in a stall. The local police ticket for over 18". But that said, I'm also noticing that I don't center in stalls as efficiently in this car. It's the first car I've ever had trouble centering and at the right angle. I really need that 360º cam!

I got to thinking, the last car I drove with curb feelers was my mom's '62 Pontiac. Shaped basically like a shoebox. All corners.

Coming from a much larger vehicle, I'm an accident waiting to happen, I drive it like an INDY car half the time. The other half like an old lady...but thats only when I'm being tailgated......eff 'em ......plenty a roads pick another one!!

Boy howdy I needed it three days ago. I pulled into a long narrow parking area at the head of a hiking trail. When it came time to back out, I found an SUV with the most protruding bike rack on the back of it that I have ever seen. Most of it was well above my back bumper sensors. All I had was my mirrors in the dim light. I pulled back forward when I was sure that another inch in reverse would gouge paint off my hatch or scratch the glass and trim. I backed again, gaining little from my maneuvering. Finally, after a couple more forward and back and dry wheeling my turns (driving my son nuts; he hates standing in place and turning the wheels), I managed to get enough confidence to make the final turn away from the danger. Man! A 360 camera would have made all of that a cinch and spared me a lot of stress.

That's what came with the car. How do they compare with the Michelins?
No idea mate, until recently we got Continental ContiSport tyres in Australia. I ran Bridgestones on my old car for most of the past 15 years, never had a problem with them. I’d go as far as saying they’re probably better than the Michelins and the Continentals

2.0's come with bridgestone potenza's.....you can push the limits with these tires, they tend to understeer :)

I see you’re running Bridgestones on your Stinger. Were they standard from the dealership or after market? I thought all the US modes came with Michelins
The 19s are staggered and come with the Michelins. All 18s are squared and come with A/S Bridgestones, as far as I can tell. On other "tire threads", some have complained that the Bridgestones are noisy; but the biggest complaint on the AWD with A/S tires is the lower top speed limit of 140 MPH, not the road noise assertion.

2.0's have 139 speed limiter.so I am told.......

140, so I've read. All the A/S equipped Stingers in all trims are limited to 140. That's because Kia put Michelin Pilot Sports on the 19" rims (rated at over 186 MPH), and thus limited the speed to 167; whereas the A/S are Bridgestones (rated at 150) on 18" rims.
