Broken Differential

No, nothing didn’t even elaborate on the oil difference.
I am also waiting for the new oil

Has anyone with the diff problem noticed any more unusual skipping behaviour from the rear end over broken roads

I know that mine (and others) has always had a tendency to walk sideways over rough roads but it seems to be a bit worse now that the diff is playing up. I could be imagining it all so just curious if others have noticed it as well

Not really, the rear can be twitchy on rough roads, especially under hard acceleration at most times.

Now that you mentioned it I did have that symptom before my differential was replaced. That’s what made me take notice that something was unusual and started paying closer attention.

Good observation and others should take notice if that happens too.

Yes, a couple of weeks before the diff broke completely my wife did complain that the car started to jump sideways ever so slightly every time she hit a manhole cover or or bump in the road on the driver's side. We did mention it to the service adviser and ask to have the rear suspension checked as well. I thought maybe a strut was bad but possibly the right axle had drag on it from a bearing going bad and when the left tire came up for an instant.......

Just read the first page so this may have been noted....
Did either of you have the car lowered with a spring kit?

Nope. Stock suspension for me.

Mine is lowered but that wouldn't have anything to do with the diff failure. Got mine back yesterday. Seems good right now, no noises, etc.. Didn't get and invoice with the warranty work, I wanted to see what the diff lube that took 10 days to get was. Anybody got that info?

Sorry for your diff problems guys & yes I’m hopeful these are isolated incidents, but thankfully Kia a has taken responsibility for the issues & acted in good faith to rectify the fault unlike other manufacturers who run a mile & deny, deny & deny.
Hey mate, just want to ask you, I've just done a little over 1000 km & just started noticing some whining types noise, its especially noticeable when at low speed (up to 30km/ph).. is it diff noise noise you think?.. maybe i need to take it in?

Personally, I would take it in and have it looked at. It won't take them 30 minutes to see if there is a hint of metal in the lube.
Like I said, mine started out with what I thought was road noise. My wife also complained that she was turning a tight corner in a drive-thru and thought she hit the curb based upon the noise made, but didn't see anything. She also said the car "jumped" sideways an inch or two when she hit a bump on the driver's side. But, again, it all started with what seemed to be road noise.

I took the car out yesterday morning and, after running errands for an hour and quite sure everything was warmed up, I romped it. As it shifted to second gear while spinning I heard a nasty sound from the clutch pack in the diff. I imagine one tire grabbed while the other continued to spin for a split second. I'm not feeling too good about this rear differentials engineering. Has anyone heard this sound under similar circumstances?

An update. My fix is getting done next week so I thought I would get the head mechanic to do a run and confirm what I have been saying re the rear end moving around more than normal before getting the oil changed. Within 100 metres and a roundabout he knew there was an issue and the longer he drove the more it showed.

I now have the movement logged on my service report and we'll see what happens after the oil is changed

So anyone with unusual twitchy rear end behaviour (other than the normal) should be aware that the diff might need an oil change at the very least even if they don't have the normal grinding noise / feel (which mine does)

Hey,
Thanks for the heads up on whats going on with your car, I'll keep monitoring mine,, So far its fine..

Gents, with all the differential issues...can you let me know the born on dates of your Stinger's please..?

The LSD clutch plates are grabbing too much, some so much that they overheat and fail.
Kia is going to add some or more slip additive.
The new fluid probably has some or more slip lubricant added to the fluid.
It would be normal to use an additive for locking diffs, but who knows if Stingers got it or not.

Owners of RWD GT2's and any RWD GT or GT1's with the $200 LSD option should have the fluid drained, inspected for metal, and replaced with the latest specified fluid. Be sure there is a slip additive included.

2019 RWD GT's ditto. (all 2019 GT's are LSD)

And here is what they are doing https://stingerforum.org/threads/lsd-limited-slip-differential-service-bulletin-oil-update.8489/

I have a 12/17 Sunset Yellow with flaking paint...have not heard this noise yet on mine but will pay extra close attention now. Perhaps ill have them drain and refill should the next service come before they buy back :)

Know exactly the sound as BMW forgot to add the Friction Modifier on my M3 with LSD and the noise was horrendous!! Glad to hear some of you are catching this before failure.

The oil has now been replaced and the grinding noise when slow speed turning has disappeared so that seems like its been fixed

The rear end movement has been substantially lessened but it still moves a little at times. Considering it has always been somewhat jittery I think it is now back to normal. I've had the diff problem for about 4 weeks so now I'm used to the excessive movement so I'm not sure whether I'm being overly sensitive to it

Time will tell
