They look better than plain steel wheels, but alloys demand some added thought and care for the colder months
by BRIAN TURNER | SEPTEMBER 26, 2017

The number of drivers using dedicated winter tires for their rides through our somewhat unpredictable winters continues to climb. According to a recent report by Leger for the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada, every province in Canada has risen by about 10 per cent since 2014, with Atlantic Canadians running at 81 per cent usage and Ontario drivers at 65 per cent. It’s also the law to have them for winter in Quebec.

As such, a lot of consumers are opting for dressier alloy wheels for their ‘winter boots.’ While appearance is certainly a factor as more drivers shun plain steel wheels, alloy wheels can also improve suspension and steering performance by reducing the amount of driveline weight outside the springs and control arms, known as unsprung weight. More and more players in the alloy wheel market with larger varieties of wheels have put competitive price pressures on products, bringing them into the budget range of more and more consumers. But, as with almost anything else in an active retail field, there are risks to avoid and ways to ensure value for money.

For many shoppers, the source for their alloy winter rim purchase is usually their tire retailer. Yes, many car dealerships are offering winter tire and rim packages with new and used vehicle deals, but almost all of these are steel wheel affairs. Aftermarket alloys come in a wide variety of qualities as well as styles, and you need to ask a few questions when consulting with your retailer. Read more...

Great post! I was going to start a winter tire thread since us Northerners will be picking up our Stingers up in the middle of winter. No chance the stock rubber will be able to do winter duty!

Here are a couple Canadian friendly sites that offer direct fit alloys for most cars. The Stinger is listed finally... fortunately my neighbour works in the tire industry so I get this stuff cheap. I bought the Audi S3 replica rims for my Golf R and they looked and fit great!

Does anyone know the offset of the stock rims? The other thing that throws me off is Fastwheels have the center bore as 72.6MM, I believe the center bore of the Stinger is in fact 67.1MM. Will this be a problem?

Cheers,
Scott

Best I can do for you:

Reifen = Tires
Räder = Rims
vorne = front
hinten = back/behind

This from the Austrian pricelist, page 11

I believe you end up using hard plastic spacers (think plastic tube) when the bore size is different. The claim is they work fine, but I don't think I would use them.

...neither would I - again. They (can) break when changing tires or even just rotating them (same thing, really), and they can get lost....;). This time, I stick to OEM

You may want to check with your dealer:

Those rims listed in the Kia brochure are made by Fast Wheels. I spoke with a Fast dealer today and fitment won’t be an issue. We should be aiming for an offset of ET30 - ET35 for flush fitment with an 18”x8” rim. Got quotes about $900 taxes in for the rims.

I’m going tomorrow to visit the dealer for more info.

For winter tires and rims, I'm considering 18" K011 with 225/45 Michelin ICE. Your dealer should be able to give you a very good deal on rims & tires, since he won't discount this new car very much if at all. Also remember to include the TPMS sensors for each rim.

Tire Rack havent got the Stinger listed yet but if you search BMW 440 GC M Sport you'll get the correct tire as the GT Limited , I have never been able to get a better deal on tires up here in Canada .

Are your local tire shops that expensive? I can't seem to justify using Tire Rack after all the shipping.

I got quotes from $1,750 to $1,850 taxes in and installed for a couple 18" allow RIM options with Micheline X-ICE 3 rubber. The K022 option above was $1850 at a local tire shop.

As moinmoin suggested there is no reason our dealers shouldn't be able to discount the packages. Mine encouraged me to go elsewhere however.

Also don't use the BMW as a reference point for rims, they have different bolt patterns, offsets and center bore.

I get the tires shipped to Blaine Washington and go pick them up , I've never had to pay duty on the 4 sets I've bought this way , end to end it's almost 40% LESS than any local tire shop . Dealers are even higher , where are you located Scotty ?

but I dont see the G70 on their site either ??

Why don't you. Take your business elsewhere...There is no law that you HAVE to buy in ---is it Milton? Pre-orders are still open. Go where you are appreciated. Make some calls. Or just one...You looked at the blue GT already....:)

Haha I did go see the blue GT! I really liked Scarboro Kia, its sooo far away though! Rob was a great host by the way! Are you suggesting a cancel my current order and go elsewhere, do you have any suggestions? haha

Located in Toronto, ON. I thought about shipping to an installer in Buffalo, but that would be a pain in the rear.

Yeah, but you soo much brighter.LOL. I like your idea. Nevermind, you don't have to get service where you buy....Only warranty has to be done at a dealer, and not necessarily the selling dealer. I would talk to you know who and ask what can be done. You decide. You or your friend talked with my wife when you were at Rob's.:)

BTW, you can open a Brokerage Account in Buffalo and have stuff shipped there. You go to Buffalo and pick it up. I have an account. It's simple.:)

Unless you can find a Buffalo shop that will store your Summers , I know several guys here that have their "off season" tires stored in their US tire installers warehouses and just go south to do their change overs , it really makes sense when you need NEW tires to replace old ones , bit more work and time but saves some pretty serious $$$

If you order from Tirerack, they'll ship to an installer, say Buffalo, you go there, make the changeover, and take you changed tires back, unless they are done of course.
Why would you leave the tires across the border? I think I am missing something here.
