What was your first car?

It was either a "72 or '73 Red Chevy Vega-used. Something like the picture below. It needed a new engine about 20 days after purchase. The Vega was notorious for a lousy aluminum engine. Come to think of it, that may be what explains why I'm not interested in a red GT2 (outside or inside).

Nice! Some very nice first rides for you guys! I think they're all nicer than mine was! :p But I bet none of yours came with a bird's next hiding in a rusted rear quarter panel. :p

Damn! Nice first car! Lucky you! :)

Welcome aboard, @exodus! Thank you for signing up! The Integra was a really nice car...

That's rare! Have any pictures of it?

That was my first and at that time it wasn't rare. So, no pictures.

46 here.

Beige 1974 Volkswagen Beetle. Looked a lot like this:

1989 Merkur Scorpio --- it drove great....when it wasn't at the local Lincoln-Mercury dealer (who cursed it when I pulled into the service drive with my Dad)

Merkur. Is that where you got your username from? Seems like a dumb question. :p

Ahh, the Chevy Vega. I remember seeing so many of them in the 80s... I guess that car left a real impression on you. :p

True, true... I wish I'd taken more pictures of my cars years ago. That's one thing cell phone cameras make so easy these days...

Look at this guy with the first cars... Camaro and then Corvette next?! Lucky you... How old was your Camaro when you first got it?

Both were new when purchased. The Vette cost $9950, I barely know my address now but I can remember the plate # for it as if it was yesterday. As an incentive for me to get good grades in college my dad promised that if I made the dean's list my freshman year he'd spring for a Vette being 99.9% sure it wasn't going to happen. With that carrot hanging in front of me guess who got a 3.5 grade point average that semester? Yup, this guy! So I went home for winter break and said to my dad "how about that Vette?" He looked at me with a confused look on his face and said "you have to make the list for the entire year, not just the first semester." While I'm pretty sure that little codicil wasn't in the deal I sucked it up, went back and hit it again, came home and again he tried to weasel out but I enlisted the help of my mom and whammo, drove to school in a brand new Vette sophomore year, the best of times if you get my drift. I suppose I should add although I got close I never made dean's list again, lol!

Well darn, that's really nice to have a brand new Camaro as your first car - and while you did have to work pretty hard to get the Corvette - what a reward. Where did you go from there? Did you stick to sporty cars or get the itch for luxury or trucks or something else?

Four years later I was staying at the NYC apartment of my future ex-wife (really), when I went to my parking spot on York Ave and E 81st St my Vette was nowhere to be found, it had been stolen overnight. I used the insurance proceeds (I'm an insurance broker by profession) to obtain a new 1980 white/beige Vette (gorgeous), a year later my FEW and I were walking down York around 2 am after seeing a comedy show at Dangerfield's, a few blocks from her apartment I saw someone walk up to and get into my car. Not thinking clearly I rushed up to the window when I saw the driver had a handgun, I slowly backed away and watched the Vette go down York never to be seen again. For some strange reason I decided to forget about Corvettes, I once again used insurance proceeds to purchase an '81 Z-28 Camaro (black/beige). That lasted about a year, there was a funeral parlor next to our office, once a week they had someone come in to wash their hearses, I left my Z there to be washed also, naturally the dude who did the washing decided to drive away in my Z and never returned. Since I'm an insurance guy and that was 3 in a row I wound up on Channel 2 News for an interview, my 15 minutes of fame I guess, once again insurance helped me replace the Z-28 with another Z, an '82 IROC edition (blue/silver), after that it all gets fuzzy, aren't you sorry you asked?

My older brother (1 yr) and I were supposed to share a 1978 Volvo 240DL through High School. The fact that he was older meant I didn't get to use it much. I saved my $ and bought a 1981 Kawasaki KZ 440 LTD from a friend of a friend. That was my only form of transportation for the next 3 years. It looked like the pic below....I'm not sure if I have any digital photos of my actual Bike.

Actually, that's a very interesting story. I can't believe you had three Chevys stolen. That 1982 Camaro was pretty nice - and one of the first cars I truly "had to have". I had a bunch since then... I had one Corvette - a 1987 C4 - loved it. But that was the last Chevy I had. Man, I guess cars were stolen a LOT back then. I didn't start driving until 1989 and I'm going to guess security got a little bit better - though those F-Body hatches were extremely easy to break into...

I went to the dark side beginning in the 90's I'd guess it was, have had Nissans, Acuras, Mazdas and Kias ever since my Chevy phase. Had an Altima, a couple of Millenias, an RX-8, a couple of TL's, an Optima, and now a Cadenza probably to be replaced by a Stinger.

All good choices. That's where so many people went back in the 90s. I couldn't understand why anybody would want one of those cars back then - but then I sat in a Volkswagen Scirocco. I understood. Japanese cars were built so many better than my favorite domestics. The build quality was amazing. The soft touch textures in the car were impressive. The layout of the dash - and everything else - it was all just so "high quality". I couldn't believe it. And then I learned that some of the best cars in the world were coming out of Germany. I was kinda crushed to learn that my American cars were, at the time, so bad... I'm glad times have, for the most part, changed...

Merkur XR4TI was my first car! Loved that car had a lot of fun and a lot of trouble also. Always looking for another one just to burn a little tire around.

I just got to thinking - I'm really curious about what all your first cars were. Or truck. Van. SUV. Whatever... So what is it? Mine was a 1970 Chevy Nova that I bought for $300 in 1989. It had 89,000 miles on it. This wasn't the exact car but it's very similar...

1971 Mustang was my first car......just love my one day old Stinger in black

1970 HT Holden Kingswood (Aussie made GM vehicle), 6 cyl. 3 on the tree, 4 wheel drum brakes, purchased 1975 for AU$ 1600.00, you really had to drive cars then, not like today. It was similar to the picture below but mine was white.

Never saw one of those! Then again, I live a few miles away from where they're sold... :p

I didn't like them back then - but looking at it now - it's a pretty nice car...

1980 Toyota Celica GT - mostly white with some primer gray and bondo.

Very popular car back in the day. Everybody and their Grandmother's turtle had one...

A half-rusted-out 1972 Camaro SS in gold with a black vinyl top!
