2018 Stinger GT2 with 3150 miles on it. Backed out of my driveway, put it into drive, went about 30 feet and then a very loud bang, bang, bang, bang. Pulled over to the side of our street. Got out and looked underneath the car and transmission fluid was flowing from under the car. I did not hit anything. Nothing in the street. Never have hit anything while driving the car. Such a huge disappointment. Car won't go into any gear but neutral. Had it towed to the dealer. Have to wait till they are open on Monday to get some answers. I have loved this car but now wish I could get my money back if that were possible. Never had a transmission fail on any car I have owned.

Has anyone else had this experience or heard of this affecting a Stinger?

First I have heard of. Sorry to hear about the trouble.
I'm hopeful that your dealer / KIA takes care of you.

Yeah I think you're the very first transmission failure I've ever heard of with the Stinger. Do you have any mods or track your car at all? It's probably nothing more than a fluke and some bad luck on your part.

I read of one other trans total self destruct c. a year ago on the forum. Yours is obviously the second. Warranty will cover it completely. This happens to individual vehicles in EVERY brand on planet Earth. Which won't make you feel better since it had to be YOURS, right? But you did not pick the wrong car, you were just unlucky. Once your tranny is replaced you'll be a happy camper.

Sorry for your loss... looking at it, at least it's not the engine gone rogue... poor subarus.

Run, don't walk, on that power train warranty

Update. The dealer looked at my car. They say the bolts that hold my drive train together were not torqued down at the factory. It was a disaster waiting happen. The bolts were blown off and acted like shrapnel. Destroyed the transmission, the pan, damaged the drive shaft, underside of the car and did damage to the frame. Dealer is waiting to hear from Kia if they say to rebuild the car or replace the car. I fear with a rebuild the car would never be quite the same.

Lucky you didn't end up with red hot metal in your butt/legs. Keep us updated!

Sorry to hear that.

Push to get a replacement car. It will be much quicker, rather than waiting to get parts, and safer for you.

Holy SHIT!!?? That is a major screwup on the assembly line. Somebody was having wife troubles, or some equally distracting RL concerns while supposed to be concentrating on the job. We (humans) are a "honeybunch of stinkweeds", yes we are.

This is analogous to driving over a small IED. Frame damage! Seriously?! No way I'd keep that car. Insist on a brand new one. And I hope that works out perfectly for you.

It literally blew up. Good thing you were still at a slow speed. I couldn’t imagine being in traffic on the highway at a higher rpm.

Exactly. I talked to the dealer about what could have happened at high speed. They seem to realize this could have been real bad. Waiting to get a temporary car now. Techs at the dealer have been in contact with engineers at Kia. I hope it doesn't take long for a resolution. Given the price of the car, the low mileage and the extent of the damage I am pushing to get a replacement. My kids went out into the street and picked up small pieces of my car's underside that were scattered about.

Forgot to mention that the dealer also said, in addition to not torquing down the drive train bolts, the factory did not use any Thread Lock.

D=

DEMAND a replacement with a factory fresh new car .....................full stop , and document everything in writing ................unbelievable !!!!....EDIT , be professional about it though

Given that it basically exploded, I'd assume there's damage hidden in places the techs haven't even found yet. You definitely deserve a new one and anything else you can get from them as a goodwill gesture!

Just, whoa! Unfreakingbelievable.
Kia is lucky this didn't result in injuries or death. End stop.

What exactly are 'the bolts that hold my drive train together'?

Torque converter, flywheel, bell housing, U-joint bolts ????? Hard to imagine having bolts 'blowing off' like shrapnel, and damaging all those components - would be very interested what the failure mode and location was.

I'd be calling Kia direct on this one as well - let the dealership know, and that it's not about you going around/above them (as they're doing the right things), but I'd be absolutely demanding (with legal backing if that's feasible for you) a replacement car.

I agree with @Manaz. Do you have a case number? If not, call client services and get one: (855) 454-2847. They'll need your VIN #.
