Just took delivery of a new 2018 GT2 and discovered that three dark grey trim pieces are heavily discolored with a corroded peeling look (the very top trim on a door and the two trim pieces which flank the rear hatch glass). Dealer submitted work order for repair and told me he’s seen it before. I’m wondering if this is a common or ongoing problem and if Kia has re-engineered this trim. I guess I could consider a wrap if it reoccurs. It looks terrible.

This has to be one of the oddest threads going. "Film" refers to the packing film often overlooked by the car prep goons at the dealership, who are inarguably supposed to find and remove all of that. There isn't a discolored "film" causing the dark chrome to look, well, discolored.
Why, is your car showing this flaw?
Welcome, btw, even though you weren't introducing yourself.

Mine too - it's not a film but a clear coating like they put on stainless steel fridges. Dealer has replaced mine once but it's doing it again. It does buff off to leave a brighter silver but this is prone to fingerprint marks ...like stainless steel. Awaiting feedback from Kia as to what happens next...
Mine is starting to go south: it's weird, from some angles the dark chrome looks normal, then you move and suddenly you can see some spots and diagonal lines almost like hash marks or light scuffing. So far, it's only on the rear ends of the passenger side that I've bothered to notice this. Basically, the "six feet rule" still works for me, so, I haven't made a move to find or pick a solution.
I thought it was just my eyesight but after coming across this thread I have noticed the trim around my front drivers side and rear doors doing the same thing
This afternoon, I looked at my driver's side dark trim and the back ends also have this very faint spotting, hash lines look, but only if you angle down enough to look at the trim from an extreme angle. Very odd. I expect it will become more noticeable with passing time. When it looks nasty, or probably before it gets to that point, I will look into wrapping them or the cost of replacement. But I don't like the idea of replacing these every few years. Also, I don't like the idea of wrapping some pieces of dark chrome and having two different finishes on the different trim pieces and the grille trim and brake vents (also the mirror cups). Maybe there's a dark chrome wrap that comes close enough to the OE dark chrome so that it's not an issue?
I only have about 7500 miles on mine, it's starting to look pretty bad for a car that's only 1 year old. For whatever reason the mirror caps and the the grill area is completely fine.

Those are plastic. I'm suspecting some sort of chemical interface fubar with the metal of the trim pieces and the dark chrome finish. (I was confusing the material with the drip rails, just now: @rocket23 took his down to the metal.) The door/hatch trim pieces are already, clearly, metal: so they are not finished the same way that the mirror caps and grilles are.
