Tire Pressure from the dealer?

I'm almost 2,000 miles in and I just now decided to check my TPMS...

48 front and back cold...51 front/52 back hot...seems a little high when cold is stickered at 38/36.

It's not massively overfilled, but I've been debating on deflating them down to around 42/44 hot.

Anyone have a similar experience; thoughts?

you set tire pressure off of what's on the door jam. only the door jam or manual. not the tire, which sometimes lists a max pressure. it's different for different tire sizes. if your pressure is anything north of 44psi, it could be the dealer maybe forgot to deflate the tires on PDI after unloading the cars. pressure in the tires is about 50psi on the trailer because the cars are strapped down and it needs to be higher. when the dealer gets the cars they're supposed to let out about 10psi or so to get it to specs. sometimes they forget.

edit:
it means -> it could be
probably -> maybe

if pressure is too high you run risk of premature wear (usually in the center or tread), rough ride, and increased chance of blowout if hitting a pothole, etc. etc.

Also remember tyre pressures on the plaque state pressures when cold, pressure will increase as tyres heat up so this is acceptable, always check/inflate when cold to advised pressures & all will be ok.

I know; by "stickered" I meant what is in the door jam. Interesting, didn't know about the deflate tire on PDI thing. I'll let some air out this weekend.

Yup, that's why I was referring to the different pressures with "hot" and "cold."

Would someone kindly post a picture of the door jam for 18" tires? I have 19s but got 18s for winter.

It is instructive to note that the Stinger TPMS only shows UNDER inflation warning. On my Pontiac G8 GT, the TPMS shows actual pressure numbers which is nice. Wish Kia had done that. I check my pressures with an accurate manual tire gauge every week and/or when ambient temperatures change significantly.

In my part of the world, compressed air is sometimes hard to find at gas stations, especially in the winter when remote air stations are shut down because of low temperatures. I bought a cheap battery powered compressor for about $50 years ago that I use at home in the garage.

Mine shows actual numbers in psi...

Good to know that. My car isn't here yet so couldn't confirm that. I have found the numbers to sometimes be less than accurate when compared to a good tire gauge, so watch for that.

Does it say that anywhere in the manual? Seems like a big oversight to not warn on overinflation. Also, the TPMS does display actual PSI numbers.

Regardless, I let some air out when I got to work this morning, at 38/36 F/B, I'm sitting at 42/40 F/B since they're hot.

The online manual does have images of the door sticker, but there are some variations depending on tires. Check your door sticker. I think it also says to use a reliable tire gauge and that numbers on the TPMS display are not always accurate.

I meant does it say anywhere in the manual that it doesn't report over-inflation.

I think the manual is concerned with under-inflation. However the dash display does show pressures after you drive it for a minute or so. It recommends just checking tires weekly with a good gauge. I've never relied on the TPMS readouts on my G8 which are fairly accurate but a pound or two off at some ambient temperatures.

I always double check my tires after any service. Just check them some morning when you wake up and deflate them down to the door sticker when they're cold.

my dash gauge indicates that the fronts are sitting at 36 while the rears are 35 driver side, 34 passenger side. and i have the 19's. have to send another message to mrs to top up tires.

Don't see a need to monitor over-inflation - unless you have ne'er-do-wells sneaking around and pumping up random tires in the middle of the night. Once adjusted correctly, air pressure is only going in one direction ... :)
