Also, given a choice, I will choose a car over an SUV any day. I just don't make enough money to buy what I'd really like...like Porsches, etc.

Been following the G70 on the Genesis Forums, they have the same sunroof issues. That Caddy looks big, would be nice to have a smaller car, I don't need a big car at all. Thanks for some suggestions though.
Good luck, it’s harder to find a good car these days since SUV’s are taking over.

I know that in America there is alot more sedans to choose from (EU doesnt have for example Genesis, Infinity (very rare in EU)) but even then it would be very hard to recommend something else. Perhaps consider moving back to a Mustang? I was cross-shopping the Stinger with the Seat Leon Cupra, which is basically a Golf R in a Seat interior and the Golf R as a hatchback with AWD is a brilliant car. A fully loaded Cupra was slightly cheaper than what I paid for my slightly used Stinger. The Golf R adds a bit of interior quality compared to the Seat but also with that comes a big lift in price tag, so honestly it would be very hard to say that moving from a Stinger to a Golf is an optimal choice.

Golf R would be an excellent choice. The only issue there is, the Mk7 has already stopped production, but the Mk8 won't be available in North America for another 1.5-2 years. If you're okay with having the last version of an outgoing generation, the 2018 or 2019 models are fantastic.

Have a look at VW Arteon or Volvo S60 R-Design.

I'm ok with a "last gen" car. Also, I've heard it's hard to get a "deal" on a Golf R, but currently I see that local dealers have TONS of 2019 inventory of them, 60 at one, 40 at another, 20 at another...

The strangest thing is although I can get it in manual (pretty much always my preference), with the DSG being quite a bit faster like they are, not to mention most of my commutes are in stop and go traffic, I could possibly end up with an auto....

Interesting! That wasn't the case when I was shopping, but that was in 2017 during the changeover from Mk7 to Mk7.5 (the refreshed version of the same generation). I would only find one or two at any given dealer.

The DSG is excellent. More of an "automated manual" as they say. It has its own learning curve, very different from your traditional automatic. There's always Tiptronic mode with manual shifting, if that's your thing. Also, if you plan to do any performance mods, the DSG is more mod-friendly than the MT.

I've heard a few reviewers claim that the VW DSG is their "favorite automatic" if they couldn't choose stick. I recall all the time I spend on my commutes, which is the majority of my drives, in purely stop and go. I did that for 3 years in my Mustang which was manual, and to be honest, it does get old. Hopefully I'm not getting old with the novelty wearing off! I do think I may still end up picking up a NA Miata this year too if things work out, so I will still get to row the gears when I take it out.

I agree you can't deny the mod ability of the DSG version. I recall the Mountune Golf R putting down a 3.7s 0-60. I'm unsure about modding on it if I do get an R, it will be a lease for sure, so I'll need to be careful playing that game.
 
I wouldn't touch anything VW as a matter of principal considering they're disgusting Omissions scandal. Just my view.

How are you liking your GTI? I've looked all over for reports of fit and finish quality (noises) and there are some, but hard to get an analysis of the frequency. Every car of every brand will have some.

I'm not sure if you could expect the R to be any better than the GTI, it is built in Germany whereas the rest are built in Mexico. Same parts but different assembling hands, may or may not make any difference.

Is your Stinger write off for sure?

No idea yet, but considering I was thinking of selling it anyway, having it in an accident only seals the deal that I'm getting rid of it.

If it is a total loss, I may look at used instead of new. If it's not written off, I don't want to deal with Kijiji fools, I'll just trade it for something new.

I love it in every way. Coming from a Stinger, you'll especially enjoy the improved rear visibility (compared to the Stinger's porthole), ease of parking and maneuvering through tight spaces due to the shorter wheelbase, and 53 cubic feet of storage space.

The overall fit and finish on mine is good, but I'll tell you about some minor annoyances. There is a creaking noise in the suspension only when rolling over an incline at an angle (so one side raises before the other). Apparently this is common and can be resolved by greasing the control arm bushings. There have been one or two interior rattles or vibrations that happened for a little while, but eventually they went away without me doing anything. (I do not have any rattles in my sunroof, as many people do. You won't have to worry about that with an R anyway.) Lastly, both the paint and glass are soft and prone to rock chips. Texas highways are horribly dusty, and we have all these dirty trucks kicking up random debris...So I have several rock chips on my hood, and I had my windshield chipped once and repaired with Safelite. Apparently these are common complaints in the VW community. So it is highly recommended to get paint protection for your Golf R.

Build quality is very similar between the GTI and R. Sometimes an issue will arise with one and not the other, but it goes both ways.

Thanks for the feedback. Compared to MY Stinger, it seems your general complaints aren't any worse than what I came from. I found when I got a paint chip in the Stinger, it was MASSIVE. I feel mine was prone to paint chips rather easily. I'm not sure about doing stone guard on the R (if I get it) because I plan to lease, if I don't intend to keep it, that would be money wasted, and I'm doubtful I would buy it out.

As for noises, the Stinger made more than plenty. It would creak going into driveways, and as for interior rattles, they were all over the car (door seals, sunroof, hatch, under the steering wheel, and random clicks and ticks all over).

I do much like the idea of a smaller car, I really don't need such a large vehicle, in fact a two seater is plenty for day to day, but those are typically sports cars and therefore expensive. I think the only options I would really miss on the R compared to the Stinger is the lack of sunroof, heated steering wheel, HUD, and occasionally the 360 degree camera. The R is otherwise fairly equally equipped. I don't really need any of the useful "highway" features like lane keep assist and whatnot, although I would buy the loaded one that includes it.

I'm having a VERY hard time finding any other alternatives within the price range. I just don't really want anything FWD at all, I could live with RWD, but would prefer AWD since our winters are long and terrible. Any alternatives I would consider like a BMW M240i, Audi S3/S4 or TT, Infiniti Q60 Red Sport, Lexus RC350 (although it's not very fast IMO), they're just more than I want to spend being easily above 60K for most. I don't think I can handle having a "slow" car as a daily driver, so I can't really step down into something like a Mercedes A class with its pathetic 188HP, or anything like that. I don't often use the power, but I like to have it. Due to quality issues that arise from owners even on 2020 models of the Stinger and G70, I'm not going to buy Korean again until they get that all straightened out.

I just hope that leasing will alleviate some of my OCD on exterior appearance (constant detailing), some of the interior noises, since I don't own the car but can rather consider it a "rental."

Every car can run into problems, if your golf has a issue are you going to stop buying Volkswagen’s? My buddy’s brand new Jaguar died within a week of owning it, that thing was $90,000.

Absolutely, I've historically typed in the name of a particular car in Google, followed by "rattle" and it seems every single make and model will have some issues. You just roll the dice and hope for the best. Not saying I'll NEVER buy Korean again, but at this current time, they don't offer something that I want enough, and I'd like something different. If Genesis had a 2 door coupe version of the G70, THAT would be a potential option. I like coupes that much, there just happens to be no coupes available right now that offer everything I want at a price I'm willing to pay.

It’s hard being a car guy these days, not too much out there anymore. Everyone’s into SUV these days, I was hoping for the GT4 Stinger but, that’s never going to happen.
