As a child of the 90s, the MKIV Supra was the thing of legends, the car everyone wished they had. It was everything a Japanese sports car could be, should be, my expectations were high for a new generation. Then the Supra (FT1) concept was released a few years back and man that thing was beautiful, wild, aggressive, everything the successor to the Supra should be.

.....Then the actual car was unveiled. What giant steamy pile of crap is this? It's like they took the concept and squished it down to make it Miata sized, the body lines don't flow at all. It looks like they hacked pieces of other cars and stuck them all together. I can get over them partnering with BMW to make this car, but why is the power so low, 335 hp?? The Z4 gets 382?? If they said this was the successor to the MR2 I would be fine with that even with it being front engine. The Supra was never supposed to be a tiny two seater, I was fully expecting something like a GTR, not a Nissan 370z. What a huge disappointment, nothing about this car excites me. Toyota has officially left the sports car market in my mind.

Holy shit, as someone who will die wanting a 98 mk4 Supra, I have almost no interest I this. The MK4 was long and sexy, and curvy, and just pure amazing. It still turns heads to this day.

This new “Supra” is a f*cking abomination. It looks childish and small. It’s engine is BMW so don’t expect the same reliability and tuning potential.

I’m much happier with my stinger now. What a f*cking joke this Supra is.

I guarantee the car will put down more than 335hp; it will probably be 330+ rwhp which would put it at ~380 crank. I love the rear of the car but not a big fan of the front, it just looks 'off' in some way that I can't explain. The body lines from the rear are absolutely beautiful, but the front ruins it.

But to your point about it being a two seater - who cares if it's a two seater when the MK4 backseats weren't usable anyway? The Supra should never be a 4 door car and making usable backseats like a GTR would just make it too big / heavy. I would much rather have a 3400lb 2 seater than a 3800lb+ 2+2 seater.

Edit: but for the price I'd be buying a 2019 Miata and swapping in a 2JZ lol

I don't think there's anything wrong with the car; your expectations were set unrealistically high. Think that's the issue a lot of people have with it. Toyota has spent a damn decade teasing this car and that along with the Supra nameplate I think created a hype around this car so great that I thnk it backfired on them a little. I'm reserving judgement on looks until I see it but i actually love it's size. I don't know where you got that this thing would compete with the R35 and it's lightyears beyond the old 370z. This is a sports car. Maybe not the one you wanted it to be, but its a sports car and it's one that's realistically attainable which can't be said for many these days.

...Go look up the N55 and the B58 which this Supra has. Please. I'm sorry but to call that engine unreliable or lacking potential is ignorant at best.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

Agree. BMW underrates their engines. I bet it dynos higher than the Stinger.

I hope your right, and I will do more research into the engine.

I still think the design of the car is hot garbage.

Looks are subjective and BMW has a lot of dumpster fire motors but their straight 6's arent one of them. It's the only engine line they make I'd actually defend. Now, things around the engine may or may not have issues depending on the car but those engines can take some punishment.

BMW probably makes the best engines in the world outside of Ferrari and AMG. If you've never driven a BMW with an inline 6, you wouldn't understand.

Ouch, this girl has an agly arse!
Will def stay with the Stinger. Replace it only with the 530hp Stinger Rx-E in a few years.....

I've been very impressed lately with Toyota's design's. The new Camry is much improved and the Corolla Hatch is very nicely styled. I had high hopes for the Supra but wow does it look bad. If it looks that bad then performance is of little value. That thing looks hideous from all angles. With all of the other beautiful performance coupe options out there, why would anyone buy this?

People talking about what the Supra should be, but every version was drastically different than the last. The first was similar to the old 2000 and looked kinda like a Datsun 270, the second was a Celica, the third was more a roadster hatch like the old rx 7. Then they had that mark 4 that looked like a wider Celica. I think nastalgia plays a lot of tricks on cars. I saw a Supra a few months ago in a parking lot. Was left hand drive. Other than that it didn't look all too thrilling. I believe fast and the furious did a lot for that car honestly.

For $55k and in that class, there's a lot of other cars i think I would be more interested in. New Miata being one of them. But I have a family..

I'm not a "car guy". So I have not followed the Supra at, all. This car comes out of nowhere for me. A mild "Edsel" center grill; mild works okay, but it's still Edsel-like. Nice long hood. Straight six you say? Cool! Sides flow nicely. Two-seater? Sports car and nothing but. Rear end. Weird! That "spoiler is more like a little pooch of a tail that looks like it should be sprouting tail feathers. Silly shaped/sized thing. But I could get over it. The tail lights!? Stinger all over them. Even the "side reflectors", but they've got a seriously bad case of the droops. Ridiculous looking things. Nice wheels. I would never want this car. But then I don't want a sports car. I think the rear end works from directly behind; even the droopy "side reflectors" look good because they are contained by the outside shape. I'm sure they don't show up at all from side-on; they look recessed, which is pretty neat looking by itself.

I'm going to chime in here with a slightly different angle, do you guys think the last supra was good looking?
Because myself and a lot of my friends think it was absolutely hideous, and then people were putting that veilside body kit on, oh God but the drivetrain is the stuff of legends.
Other then being a bit short in length I think it looks much better then the last one.
I too though did think they would knock it out of the park with the camry, corolla and even 86 all looking great.
Ah well at least we have our Stingers!

As someone said above, maybe it’s nostalgia, I grew up in the 90’s (born mid 80’s) and yes I’m grew up idolizing fast and furious.

I think the MK4 Supra is one of the best looking cars in existence. I would love one. It’s in my dream garage along with a R34 and 2004 sti.

I hope the new one grows on me, but I don’t ever think I’ll own one or feel the same emotions the MK4 brings to me.

TO ME- the Mk4 Supra is art, It’s beauty, it’s a statement of JDM design. The new one just doesn’t feel that way for me.

The last gen was BEYOND hideous and had not a single good looking angle. I didn't think it was possible for something with the supra name on it to look even worse, but, the new one actually does.

I’m sure there are plenty that hate the stinger. The badge. The style.

Can’t please everyone.

I’ll hold off judging till I see in real life and see how it performs.

True, it's just the bar / expectations were set high. I even thought the price point was low...
