Test drove Stinger GT

I test drove a 2.0T Premium this weekend and it higher level of noise compared to my 2017 Optima hybrid, I was expecting it to be quieter on the same road but it wasn't. One of the reasons I didn't get a Mazda 6 was due to the road noise and the lack of power, I enjoyed driving it but wanted a bit more out of it. The GT has pulled me in with it's power and poise, waiting patiently until I can get one.

All this boils down to whether I should get a 2.0L Premium or Base GT?

Yeah, I wrestled with this. I was initially a Base guy, but went and got in a Premium and now I want that. The GT is missing some features I really like on the Premium. A mixture of the Premium and GT would be perfect for me. Something like the "GT-Line" trim other countries got.

I'm wresting with your same thoughts. I thought the sound system would be a big deal to me. It isn't. The HK (AKA Samsung sound system) isn't all that much better than the 9 speaker system. Yes, more base due to the speakers under the seat, but spend a few hundred at a stereo store and they can replace the 9 speakers or a few of them and make things sound terrific...

The GT does have the GT look on the front end and rear. Back-end not such a big deal to me, but take a look at the GT vs the Base/Premium and it is different and not as aggressive. The 19" rims provide less roll and I prefer that.

Maybe you a sunroof guy? I've never owned one and it's not a huge deal for me. I fact, not having it brings more headroom and space to the back seat. W/sunroof, you lose about 2.5" of ceiling, so if you ever have tall backseat passengers... Just a thought. But I've never wanted to pay $2k or so for a sunroof.

And the base/premium does provide better gas mileage. 19/25 vs 22/29... Thus 21 vs 25 mpg. For my driving case, (24k miles a year), burn all the math down, it's roughly another $500 more in fuel costs for the GT, or another $41 a month more. That means a lot to me, but wow, that GT is just so fun to drive.

If you haven't yet driven the GT, might I suggest you NOT do it, if you want to save money long-term and in the purchase price and stick to the Premium. Boy, tough choice. I still might not know until the last few weeks before I pull the trigger...

I like the GTs look mostly. I like the Brembo brakes (honestly I just like the red calipers). As far as the Premium goes, I like many of the interior features like memory seats, electronic steering adjustment, 8" display (the 7" inch looks so cheap), etc. I don't really care about the speakers or the sunroof (Never had one, but I've never understood the appeal. Perhaps they're awesome). I'm fine with a 2.0T. I drive like a grandma anyway. I don't want a car to be sluggish, but I don't care about 3.3T (Although, I wouldn't turn it down. I can get from 0-the speed limit really fast :)). I don't plan on getting in the GT. I'm sure the power will feel great. If it had the interior features of the Premium I would go GT for the more aggressive look alone.

I had forgotten about the memory seating. I've always wanted that in a car, never had it though. And yes, the 8" display looks much nicer in the Premium and color display in the instrument cluster is far superior vs the monochrome 3.5" display.

Have you seen the heads up in the GT 2?! It's awesome. Just floats in the air just above the dash. Really, really, nice.

I do prefer the brushed aluminum look vs the piano black in the base. Can't really the treatment of the Premium, but the piano black plastic immediately shows dust and finger oils...

I'm coming from a Mazda6, so I'll need to test drive both again. The 2.0L was plenty peppy for me, it was just the GT that blew me away! And the red brakes are cool, but they are fantastic on the road!

Yeah, my wife will probably drive it sometimes so I like the memory seats. The visibility isn't great in some areas of the Stinger and that would help keep everything perfect for each driver. I haven't seen the heads up on the GT2, but I know it's out of my price range anyway. My car is a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am so any car will be a huge upgrade, but I've enjoyed not having a car note for the last 18 years.

Wow, way to go in keeping the same car. Indeed, paying on depreciating assets is NEVER fun! The longest I owned a car wa 13 years and 167k miles - 1993 Ford Probe. 2.2L w/stick. Mazda power train. Flawless. Here's to hoping Kia and build a reliable a powertrain as that!

What was louder? Engine noise?

What was louder? Engine noise?
Question for Waynerm002: When I test drove the GT, I pulled over and went into settings (with the dealer guy) and we turned off the engine noise being pumped into the cabin. It's set to "mid" or "moderate" something like that, as a default. It did quiet the cabin.

NOTE: I have a 2014 Mazda6 Touring. Love the drive, and the gas mileage. Seats are not supportive enough for longer driving, and the road noise is abysmal... Mazda claims the 2017 is now 20% more quiet than my old 2014, but I suspect that is a stretch. And yes, the Mazda6 is wanting with power. It's impressive for a mainstream mid-size family sedan at 184hp/185 torque, but it's no 2.0L or 3.3L V6 Stinger, that's for sure!!!

Now, I should say, Mazda's 2018 (coming soon) has a 250hp turbo version coming, but if pushing it, not sure the suspension dynamics will handle it so well when pushed. After all, the Stinger is a G70 platform designed from scratch. It is NOT a souped up Optima, etc... Mazda, Honda, do what you will, they are just trying to sport up an entire engineering design focused on meeting the widest range of buyers possible, with practicality trumping performance in every area.

Regards to the K900 they haven't done well in the states at all sales wise. I came out of a Cadenza to move up to the K900 and received $7500 lease cash, no security deposit or cash down. With that being done I didn't have any rollover from the Cadenza. My personal advice to one and all leasing is the best option, patients will get you a better deal. Here's a another example: 2015 K900 used with 15k - 20k miles goes for $24k - $26k due to depreciation. Purchase new from the dealer $55k-$62k
I’m on the Kia website right now and for The k900 V6 luxury they are offering 15,000 rebate on a V8 luxury they are offering 14,000 . I believe the reason is there not gonna make them anymore still a hell of a deal on a boat .

Can some of this be a LeBron James thing? It's just odd... David & Goliath (Kia's Ad Agency) say "Hey, let's get the big-time NBA guy! That'll really make people think Kia luxury!" But no one buys the idea LeBron chooses to drive a Kia. LeBron's persona and brand is not built on him being Roger Federer, with Rolex and all-things luxury. LeBron tries to target he's the kid from Cleveland that's done well but he's not out of touch and not that far from "normal." Then there is the fact a lot of people do NOT like LeBron. Exhibit ZZ as of today. LeBron puts up a high-school pictures of himself on Instagram, with text of a young LeBron congratulating an old LeBron on making 30k points in the NBA faster than anyone else, calling himself King. Really? Who does this? How narcissistic is that? And he hadn't even yet accomplished it until likely tonight... Congratulating himself? Really. So when I see LeBron talking to the camera about driving to practice in his Kia K900. No, no and no...

The K900 has another problem. It's "Hey, we have this car for Genesis, let's sell more and give it to Kia." Chevy, Pontiac. Really, it is a retread, and the car does not fit the brand well at all. Just a host of problems all around.

This is what sets the Kia apart. I wrote earlier today, Kia has caught lightening in a bottle, so rinse and repeat! Kia and Hyundai's Genesis team built this car, the Stinger. It's a focused car. There is passion behind it's design. It just ticks so many boxes, from practicality, to true power, and design that matches what the car is and does. It isn't "Let's take this and then wrap it in some form of marketing, and throw it over the transom to MARCOM to to advertise." Rather, with the Stinger, it's "Let's tell people what we've got here." The product IS the marketing.

First, the audience hears what you tell them about the product. Then, they see it. Lastly, they experience it, and ask the question of whether it matches what they were told and saw? If it matches, and meets or beats those set expectations sent to the audience you have a winner. If not, it rings hollow and there is a disconnect, and the product will likely fail.

The Stinger rings true, amazingly so. Okay, not many marketing folks out there I'm sure so I'll stop rambling. ; )

I am driving a 2017 Mazda 6 rental right now. I don't know how loud the 2014 is, but the 2017 is not quiet. IMO it is louder than my 2013 optima, which I think is already too damn loud.

2014 Mazda6 is 73.8db's which is LOUD (at 70mph on HWY). Mazda claims 20% quieter, but I highly doubt that. They thought that loud meant sporty. It just means annoying...

The wind and outside noise was more than my 2017 Optima Hybrid. At 50-55 mph is where it got loud enough to make you think you were going at a higher speed. In the Optima at 70 it got about the same but was more muted, I’m thinking the Optima had better glass and sealing on the front door. I'll add that this stretch of road have some noisy sections but what I recall is the noise from my left ear which sounded like wind, road and just sounds from other vehicles outside the cabin. I've driven the hybrid on highways where I thought "this car feels good at 70" only to look down and realize I'm traveling at higher speeds.

I'll admit I do not drive this hybrid as I should, they put a Sport mode in it (thanks KIA) and the car rides and handles well enough to make it fun to drive hard. When I take it on long road trips, I'm not concerned about the economy as much as the drive, and drive it I will. I'm in Sport mode a lot more these days and have eroded the economy from 40 mpg average to 37 (some of that is due to the cold winter temps) mpg. As said before, the 2.0T is more my preference but I spend a lot of time in the car so I expect my "upgrade" to be quieter than my current vehicle.

I had checked out the XC90 when it came out but was disappointed with the level of noise it had for what they are charging for it. It is luxurious with high quality materials and a nice sound system but cranking the system to overcome the road noise isn't what I expect on any $60K vehicle. The Sorento on the other hand was much quieter but hasn't quite grown on the wife yet. The Stinger has and based on our test drive of the GT, she prefers the quieter cabin of that car. I haven't driven it hard with her on a test drive yet and she has driven it in comfort and ECO mode for a short trip. Each time we drive one we are focusing on different things. Once I get a place to let me take it out for a long drive or let me play with one on their lot , I'll look into some of the things mentioned here. I would prefer a 2.0T with the GT trim and all the things the Korean version have as well as a quiet cabin. If the G70 does it better and KIA doesn't step up, that may change things.

The lease is not a bad deal at least in California they're giving $7200 rebate on the lease , and if your military present or past another $400 so $7600 rebate is pretty good and basically makes up for the cost of the lease , and if you let the lease run for six months and then buy it you will be getting A substantial amount off the sticker price .
How do you know when the best time to do that is?

That's a clever trick. Is there a legal clause where you must have put in at least 6 months lease payments before you have the purchase option available?

This gets me thinking. If I leased a GT w/Saftey Package, MSRP (including destination) is: $41,250. Lease Cash for this version is $4800. A local dealer is also taking off about $1500 from the sticker. Add it up, and the negotiated price could be around $34,950. Not bad!

Now, will I still need to put something down? I'd try to have a zero-down lease, which would increase the monthly's probably to $575 or so, but if I paid that for 6 months, that would be $3,450. Does this come off of the $34,950? Or is there some formula or reduction after 6 months time of the buyout price for the car?...

Seems you know how to work this and it IS intriguing. Please explain in more detail if you can. Thanks!

I haven't got the answer to that but I'm sure it's somewhere in the FinePrint , I'm still waiting for them to find a white one . But I have been told by more than one salesman , take salesman into consideration , that this can be done how long you have to lease don't know they say 3 to 4 months I'm thinking more Like a year which should get you about 5 to 6 grand off . It's a nice nugget if it is there, I am just trying to get the deal done by February 28 when the offer expires. As it starts getting into the year it may go away altogether so I want to jump on it now . Even if the six-month buy out is BS the $7200 bonus will more than cover the rental Fee that is in the contract which is about $4500-$5000 on 36 months so that leaves you about $2200 or if you're a vet $2600 off of the $34,950 . So I don't think it's too bad whichever way it goes it's better than a sharp stick in the eye . If you've already leased yours I guess you need to sit down and read the fine print see if there is anything in there about buying it out and the rebate , if there is let us all know if this is true then I'll put a little bit more money down to lower the back end . Now these figures are on a GT to all-wheel-drive which seems to have the highest rebate , bonus ,whatever they referred to it as . Hope this helped a little . When your brain starts getting warped from crunching the figures, just get in it Drive it , enjoy it , Life is short and nobody gets out alive .

Ramble on that's with these forums are for , keep it up and they will probably have you do a commercial . Yes it's not a BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi , Cadillac CTS-V, but the GT will sure give them a run for the money in a straight line . And like I've said before The warranty beats them all . And personally I think the stinger looks better than all the above , although the CTS - V looks very good , but not for 20 grand more . But that said, it depends on what you want, so you could watch all the YouTube videos read all the magazines , and check out all the fourms , or just go down to the Kia dealer and take them for a test drive see if it fits what you want . But if you want to car that you want to take to the track do some drifting, maybe a Mustang Camaro etc. That are in about the same price range . Anyway happy shopping .

This is VERY Credit Card-like. 80% keep the lease near full-term and turn it back in for another lease. Banks will gladly give some of us big money off, even if we buy, to get those 80%. "We'll give you $500 cash if you spend $3000 on our card the first 3 months." They know the percentages. A guy like me takes them up, NEVER has a balance. Gets $500 and then cancels the card. It's there offer, take it. They know 95% will not cancel within the first year, then they'll get a $75 or $100 annual fee, and far too many people, who knows why, carry balances. They'll live with people like me, or you, or us, when it comes to this or to using lease cash, to get the other 80%.

Yes so true the credit card companies hate me I never carry a balance , well at least to date . I do believe the best way to get a deal is to buy it get as much off as you can from the sticker with them believing that you are going to finance it and when they come in with the bottom line pay cash for it . The look on their face is worth it .
