Stinger vs Golf R

I'm not seeing the big difference between the two to not compare. I did the same thing but with a Autobahn as the Rs were sold out. They are both hatchbacks even if one is more powerful and bigger than the other. So if someone was looking for a sporty fun car with the utility of the hatchback, why not look at both when you think of it that way. It's not like comparing a Mack Truck or a John Deere tractor to the Stinger, as that truly would be apple to oranges.....

The golf r is over 700 lbs lighter and will be a lot more nimble. Way easier to throw in and out of corners, but it has less cabin room than the stinger. The stinger I believe will also be alot more comfortable on long drives. I've driven them both but only on short test drives.. IMO they are not really all that comparable as they were built to be different things. Which is better for you depends on what you are looking for...

Sorry dude. Actual specs show the Golf has more interior room front and especially rear. The Stinger is wider, giving it its only advantage cabin-wise. Tall people will feel cramped in the Stinger, not so in the Golf, where a 6'5" guy fits comfortably and I have had three adults (including my 6'4" brother-in-law) in the back of my GTI and R and he had room. In the Stinger? Nope.

Plus, you can put a nuke in the boot of your Golf. Not so in the Stinger. Golf has more interior usable space even though the Stinger is longer and wider by quite a bit. Interior, ease of use of controls...the Golf. Putter around the neighborhood without pissing off the neighbors? The Golf.

Rob a bank and fade into traffic? The Golf.

The Golf has the MQB chassis, the singularly best mass-produced chassis out there and has proven time and again to give a more controlled, comfortable ride than anything in its class and lost of stuff not. Plus the Golf has excellent site lines and visibility, while the KIA has them from a Camaro, only worse, making the Golf easier on the brain to drive in traffic. Seeing out of a vehicle, it turns out, is really important.

Additionally, with the VW you get 37 more HP and 20 lbs more torque in the comparable 2.0 turbos in the base Stinger and the Golf R.

The Golf has a superior safety rating in everything. Personally, I took a 65 MPH t-bone right in the driver's door on my (now dead) GTI and only got a charlie horse. Zero injuries. Bent the entire B pillar in and crushed the driver's door. You'd be a victim in the KIA.

There's a reason why the Golf is THE hot hatch King. Plus, you can transport a brain in a Golf and deliver it in one piece, without catching the brakes on fire down a twisty road (suck it Ford Fuckus).

There's a reason why ALL Golfs have been on the Car and Driver Top Ten List for 11 years running, now.

KIA? ...oh...not on the list. Anywhere.

Golf R. Winner.

PS: I've been 'rolled on' by the V6 Stinger owned by one of the soldiers down here at Ft Benning. When he caught up with me...he was pissed he'd bought the Stinger. "But I beat...some Dodge, some Chevy..." I had to explain power to weight. My R, which cost less than his Stinger even WITH my mods (APR Stage 2 425WHP/450LBFTTQ), has every advantage over the Stinger. "My friend told me to check out the R," was the last thing he said. I still told him the Stinger looked good and gave him the "...different strokes for..." out. Be humble in victory, my Father always told me.

I'm waiting to lose. The guy with the Lambo lives here won't race me. There's always someone faster. I learned that when I went to Houston and hung out with the Supra crowd. :D

Oh yeah...plus: Wolfsburg. What do you have? Oh yeah: Yeongdeungpo. I think that's pronounced You on dung poo? Winner: VW

yup , the Stingers really for us old grinders !!:laugh::laugh:

Not so. I'm 61 and LOVE my Stage 2 APR Golf R. Loved my GTI until someone killed it. Love my wife's AllTrack. I'd still try KIA's Stinger AllTrack...oh wait...they don't have one. Well then maybe the diesel...oh...don't have one of those, either. Dub Life.

I drove both and for me it came down to the golf r and the stinger. In my opinion, the golf r is overrated. It really needs more power. I mean it's great, it was my second choice after all but the style seems dated and I seem to enjoy driving a 6 cylinder over a 4 banger, any day .

Oh and the golf r is missing a lot like no sunroof, etc .

Hi there. My Golf R smoked one of those Stinger 6's just last month. Golf R overrated? Stock 4 cyl vs a biturbo V6? We have APR to take care of your V6...mine's Stage 2...and still cost less than your Stinger V6. ...oh, more WHP and TQ, too. Plus, more everything room, MQB chassis. 7 generations of refinement. And Wolfsburg. We have Wolfsburg. You have You on dung poo. ...or something like that. Nice-looking car though, the Stinger.

MSRP for a Stinger GT is 66.000 EUR in UK, isn‘t it? What‘s the price for a comparable loaded Golf R?

That would be under $40,000 WITH an APR Stage 2 mod, which gives it everything it needs to smoke off your Stinger. I know this because I have the Golf R APR Stage 2 and just recently walked away from a Stinger from a 20 MPH roll. :D

Hahaahah isn't there a VW forum you should get to? Bye!

I don't doubt the Golf R's straight line and handling credentials compared to the Stinger.... but those responses smell like troll.

Everyone on this Stinger forum is very proud of you. You must be an amazing person to need such validation. I'm sure everyone around knows just how truly special you are, because everyone on this forum does now, too. SO HAPPY FOR YOU.

and yet, you are on this site extolling the virtues of your rabbit....oh sorry, your golf, oh sorry again, your dressed up rabbit. sure, its quick, sure it made the top ten list because its been out longer. there has been 10+ years of development for the golf. refinement after refinement. and, like you pointed out, there is always someone faster. but, and i do have to point out that you are wrong in a couple of things.
1-your golf is a hell of a lot louder than the stinger. especially if you have installed one of those moronic exhausts
2-i am 6'3", passenger was 6'4" with two guys in the back both at 6'3" and we all had plenty of room.
3-the reason the golf might have more space in the hatch area is that it is a hatchback. stinger has a pronounced sloping roof line.
4-you mentioned apr, and yes, i also have owned a couple of vw's and am familiar with apr. but, in stock form, 4 cyl to 4cyl, you beat the stinger in weight and hp. but, you are also several thousand dollars more expensive. so, you take your golf r, add all the apr stuff to make it really fast, and then tell us about beating a twin turbo stinger and how the guy down the street with the lambo won't race you. but, at the end of the day, you are driving a golf while we are driving stingers. better looking with no boy racer exhaust note or lowered suspension. the lambo guy? you aren't anywhere near his level of refinement.
so, that being said, i am glad you are a car guy and that you are passionate about your R. i really am. we need more car guys out there keeping the faith by modding their cars and pointing out what does or does not work to the manufacturers. but, in the future, stay on the vw forum because, quite honestly, this isn't the place to flame another car manufacturer. don't like the stinger, deal with it.

There are opinions and facts. Interior dimensions front and rear are larger Stinger compared to Golf. I know because I crossed shopped both cars also measured dimensions of Kia are bigger including width. I’m 6’4 and fit fine in rear of Stinger just fine. Kia scores a 5 of 5 with better as good as the golf in NCAP safety tests. Probably due to use of so much highstenth steel and superior engineering.

Then there is bouncy nature of shorter wheelbase econo car based Golf R compared to relaxed Stinger . I’ve never been a fan of econo car chassis that have been hopped up with blown 4 banger. At least Stinger was purporse designed. If youre going to go with a ride quality compromised performance car might as well go for Vws big brother Porsche Cayman S. 718 S Turbo with a tune will smack econo boost box to curb and GT3 suspension bolts onto Cayman. Golf Rs are hors d'oeuvre for my 2010 987.2 Cayman S Turbo. 500 hp and 2200 lbs. built my Turbo Porsche including used Cayman with ceramic brakes for price of the fan boi econo box. bye bye boosted econo box from Wolfsburg. Meet your Daddy from Stuttgart. Lol!

Just depends on what you want ...a cute little boosted VW econo box to pick up groceries for grandma or Hip laid back German designed Korean GT cruiser stuffed full of technology for trip into wine country with fraulien . I picked the latter as I have a zoomie German car. Also Nice to have a dependable car with 10 year warranty. Something Rabbit ...oh I mean Golf owners have thrown out the window with stage 2 crazy boost box. And at end of the day you are still driving an econo box. But heck if you pull up your sleeves and turn baseball cap backwards I’m sure you’re a sight to see for junior high kids.

you are correct, but, nowadays, i think everybody needs a good smack to the head so they remember their manners. i also didn't say anything that wasn't true. truth hurts.

I refuse to believe any 61 year old would be going around trolling pro-VW stuff like a 16 year old who just bought a used GTI and thinks he's hot stuff.

VW makes a decent car in the R but you are still driving a Golf. I shopped them in 2015 and 16 only to realize most of the components were the same from my 2008 R32 inside and in the chassis. That car spent MONTHS in the shop to fix poorly designed suspension issues. Driving the stock R vs the stock GT1 and there is no comparison. VW still
targets the late 20s crowd with these cars for some reason. Throw in some styling work on the R and make it look modern and maybe I’d reconsider my position.

I re-opened this discussion and shut-down the ability for the troll to reply. All said and done, don't be too hard on the 61 year old bragging about his VW Golf. He can surely use a pat on the back every once in a while...

What he needs is diabeetus medication and funeral plans!

I just got a GT1 but have always liked the GTI/R. Ever since the first GTI was imported to the US, it defined the hot hatch segment and has gotten great reviews
Had test driven both a few years ago.
Drove the R32 and believe it or not, I think the overall feel is way better than almost every other car I've driven including the current MB C450 AMG, my 2014 Audi S4 and the Stinger!
And noticeably better than it's cousin I had driven, a 2013 S3.
Coincidentally, my son is looking at the 2018 GTI and I went with him to test drive it.
Still has a great feel in everything from switch gear to stick to interior/exterior fit and finish.
But the suspension did not feel as compliant as I remember in previous years, even on good roads.
So for stealth, nimble driving fun and overall feel, I'd go with the Golf R.
But for sweet style and presence, ferocious acceleration, features and long distance cruising, gotta go with the Stinger.

When I was driving around in my Santa Fe Sport SUV I never would have considered trading it in for a Golf. I did end my 36 month lease early when I saw the Genesis G70 and Stinger GT. I flew to NYC just to attend the autoshow and take a look at the G70. Looks is the big motivator for me to trade cars. Ruled out the G70 due to back seat room but was turned on by the Atlantica. Could not wait so leased a red GT1. I don't put the VW and Stinger in the same category.
