Hey guys,

Going for my test drive tomorrow morning, my friend is telling me I am CRAZY and will not stop telling me how much better his Golf R is and will be to a Stinger.

Can I get your thoughts? either from experience of anyone who has driven both?

Thanks!

The golf r is over 700 lbs lighter and will be a lot more nimble. Way easier to throw in and out of corners, but it has less cabin room than the stinger. The stinger I believe will also be alot more comfortable on long drives. I've driven them both but only on short test drives.. IMO they are not really all that comparable as they were built to be different things. Which is better for you depends on what you are looking for...

Well I think we need to know what kind of car you're looking for in the first place.

Those cars are in different class and serve different purposes, it all depends on what you are planning on doing with your choice of vehicle.

Hi guys,

Well for me, I am in New Brunswick Canada, I want something that will be good in Snow/Ice something that gives a great ride over very bad roads holes etc, and something that is going to be very quiet in cabin, this will be my daily, and Fast of course is a MUST! :P

Very different vehicles. One has to decide what it is they want in a car (or their second, etc.). Test drive both as much as you can before making a decision!

For your location and weather I think the Golf would be better .................

I'm not really sure how a Golf-R would be better in snow or ice than the Stinger. Fill me in on that, @westcoastGT. I mean - the all wheel drive Stinger is pretty good in the snow. No? As for something that "gives a great ride over very bad roads", potholes, etcetera - that's no doubt going to be the Stinger. Very quiet in the cabin. I mean - isn't this a no brainer? I've never heard anyone mention that the Golf R was especially luxurious and quiet inside. But the Stinger, on the other hand...

@BoardGameBuddha, there's nothing "crazy" about choosing the Stinger over the Golf R. Like others have said, it all depends on the type of car you're looking to drive every day. If you want a car that's fast but also luxurious and concentrates on comfort for the driver and passengers, you might be crazy to buy the Golf R. If you want a car that you can carve serious corners in, you might be crazy to buy the Stinger - as the Golf R will do that better...

The choice is yours...

IMHO ...................New Brunswick is not the domaine for sporty type cars .................unless you only want to drive them for 5 or 6 months a year ....................A Suburban would be nice !!!

Hi GBB,
I just sold my Golf R to purchase a 3.3 Stinger.
If you like driving fast in comfort both are excellent choices and surprisingly the Golf is big enough as an everyday driver.
Personally I wanted something more luxurious and there is no beating the V6 compared to the straight 4.
Had I been richer with a bigger garage I would have kept both but for what I need today it is the Stinger all the way. Either choice you are not gong to be disappointed.

Here comes the "you can't compare things that aren't exactly the same!" crew. :D

They're both very well-rounded cars, so I considered both. Some of you might be surprised by the quality of the R interior, especially the new Mk7.5 with its Audi-based Digital Cockpit. It also has Dynamic Chassis Control, a kind of adaptive damper system. I'm sure the Stinger is still smoother and more luxury-focused, but it's not as wild a comparison as some of you seem to think.

Although it's a "hot hatch," the R is generally considered the most mature and refined car in that class. It's really quite versatile, which is why you see people comparing it across classes.

You are trying to compare apples and oranges.

Golf R vs Stinger 3.3L GT

The Golf is a much shorter wheelbase, lighter, and is on tyre's so thin they may as well have painted the rubber around the wheel. The ride is harder and can "fidget" on poor roads, but will be more of a hoot around a series of short bends. The rear leg/head/foot room is also better in the Golf. The boots are different ... one is short but higher, the Stinger's is longer but shallower.

The Kia is a purpose built GT car, where the Golf R is a maxed out hardcore version of a normal hatchback. The 0-60 times as good as dammit the same (assuming Golf R Automatic - Manual is 0.5 slower). The main differences apart from physical sizes, etc... are that the Golf needs to be kept in the higher rev ranges to get the most out of it due to only one turbo, where the Stinger can pick up speed even at 2000 rpm and it will over take anything in a few seconds on the highway, the Golf will downshift 1-2 gears before any burst happens.

So do you want a GT car for long drives, that you can thrash when you want to ... OR ... a Car that you can thrash around town/small country roads, that doesn't need do 300miles comfortably ?

My current car is a VW Scirocco R, which is a bit similar to the Golf R. It's a nice car but for me the ordered Stinger GT feels like a huge step forward compared to the Scirocco R. I love that GT feeling ... sitting in the Stinger just feels so much more comfortable and impressive. Plus it's a good feeling to drive a car that is almost perfect for every kind of situation. You wanna go with some friends - take the Stinger. You need space for luggage or anything else you want to transport ... take the Stinger. Maybe me and my girlfriend wanna have some kids in the upcoming years - again the Stinger fits 100% perfect. For me it's the ideal one for all solution ... the perfect daily driver for every purpose and by the way it turns some heads and accelerates nicely! :-)

You should clarify that you're comparing the Stinger GT. Perhaps a better comparison would be the Stinger 2.0T with the Golf R (or even GTI). In that comparison, I say the Golf wins.

Interestingly, the Golf GTI actually has better low-RPM torque than the R due to its smaller turbo. The GTI also has a LSD, which the Stinger 2.0 lacks.

I love the Golf R and may choose it over the Stinger if I was in my early 20s. Stinger is much more grown up in my opinion.

yup , the Stingers really for us old grinders !!:laugh::laugh:

Thanks ... I’ve added a note in my post.

In the UK we can only buy the GT (USA GT2) at the moment .... and other engines or non-top spec you can only pre-order with no release date - so my brain is wired that there is only the 3.3 :-)

MSRP for a Stinger GT is 66.000 EUR in UK, isn‘t it? What‘s the price for a comparable loaded Golf R?
