Staggered setup and AWD

Hello, I am new to this forum and considering purchasing a Stinger GT. I have one question on the tire sizes. When looking on Kia's website it shows that RWD GT cars will come with 225/40R19 in front and 255/35R19 in rear. The AWD GT cars come with 225/45/R18 all around. AWD is important because of where I live there is a ton of snow, but I would like to get the 19 inch wheels with the staggered tire sizes that are wider in the rear. Is this possible? Thanks in advance for your help.

First - where are you located, please add this info to your user profile.

Second - my AWD has staggered wheels/tires. My location is in my profile. Many other US owners have AWD models with staggered sizes, it's not unusual.

So the answer to your question might depend on where you are located.

I am in Illinois as well, the reason I want to 19's is because I like the look of the wider rear tires, I saw several stingers with the 18's that have 225 width tries in the rear and it does not look right, way to narrow on a car like this, the 255's in the rear look way better.

You should be able to get either one--but will have to tell the dealer which you prefer. If you don't specify, you get whatever is next off the truck.

Welcome. The AWD comes in both wheel sizes. The 19s get the 167 MPH top speed; the 18s, with A/S tires, get 130 MPH top speed. So as well as not looking as cool/wide in the rear, you don't need to go any faster on "skinny" rear tires. ;)

Curious, how exactly does the car magically get this 167 top speed? Suppose you have two equal Stingers, one has 18s, the other has 19s. When was the limiter removed?

Right, but with the "wobbly" rear end that has been discussed to death, I do not want less (relative) grip at the rear than is already there. On most cars, agree completely.

The wobbly effect you are seeing has nothing to do with losing traction, there is too much wiggle and give in the suspension components. Thats why lowering springs, sway bars, End links and sub frame collars will fix that 100%. Should the car come like this from the factory? Well if EVERYTHING on the car was perfect it would be much much more then 50K.

for about $1250 you can fix up the suspension, mind you 99.9% of people with this car have no issues. There are not a lot of them on the road, and on top of that even less that are modding their stingers. And even out of those only 1/4 care about tracking their car and high speed wobble.

So to me it makes sense for them to sell the car at 50K and those who want more and to correct some imperfections can do that.

The wobble is worse with A/s (lower grip) tires and with less rubber at the rear. Agree that you can improve the car with simple mods, but for most people (95%+) who won't consider mods, just get the staggered set-up as the best start. And then keep the staggered if/when you put on A/S or winter tires.

Factory setting, depending on tire quality. All manufacturers operate this way--limiter is either tire dependent or, in some cases, trim level (i.e., you pay more, you get more top speed). But the higher trim levels usually come with higher speed-rated tires, too, so the two go together.

It has to do with the speed rating of the tires and the legality that surrounds that.

The 18s with all seasons are only rated to maybe 130 mph so the car is limited to that, the 19s with Pilot 4S are Y rated (186 mph/ 300 kph) so thus the speed limiter is set to 167 as the tires can handle.

You guys are forgetting one key thing, THIS CAR CAN DO 168mph/270kph+!!! if they gave you tires that are only good for 130mph and you take it up to 170mph and a tire blows out or your car spins out they would be liable for putting tires on the car that are not up to the job. To get around that if you buy the car with 18s they set the limit to 130 or if you buy it with 19s and the limit is 167+ and you swap the tires with inferior tires and go destroy your car or kill your self they are not liable as YOU chose to put those tires that didn't meet OE standards.

Its all about covering their ass.

gotcha. Besides having the bigger e-dick, are there any other differences? I take it I'm not the only one not taking the car out 130+ everyday

Bigger E-dick is pretty much it. Technically 18s are better for 99.9% of everyone with this car since for 99.9% of the time people are daily driving it. 18s provide a more comfortable ride, cheaper, better gas mileage as they would have less rolling resistance.

But again its all about the bigger E-dick.

First off, there are ultra-high performance all-season tires with the higher speed rating. KIA just chooses not to use them.

The speed rating of the tire is primarily related to the strength of the sidewall. So, while none of us are sustaining speeds high enough or long enough to have tires implode, the real reason that you should care is handling. The stiffer sidewalls on the higher speed-rated tires make a dramatic difference to handling and cornering. They may also have the opposite effect to ride comfort. Caveat emptor.

You can still improve a slow car with great tires. And you can ruin a fast one with bad tires.

I’m AWD. I guess “bunny hop” would be the proper description. The whole thing lifts. It’s pretty cool haha.

I got this behavior today, cracked me up and I forgot to keep my foot in it.

lol... Usually when I do it, it's at a stop sign with moron's who don't know how to use them. As soon as it hops and the tires squeal a little, I let off immediately because I know I'm the only Stinger in town, in a very noticeable color - yellow. Don't want some redneck seeing my car in a parking lot and f*cking with it because I did a "burnout".

I just put on a staggered set on my GT1 AWD... 245/35/20 front 285/30/20 rear. Love the look. Purchased the car with the 18" all season set up. I like more rubber on the road, but admittedly, the ride isn't quite as smooth as it was... which I'm totally cool with.

What width wheels did you get to fit those fatter tires? Unfortunately, the 19's that come with the car are too narrow to up-size the tire width. Otherwise, I would do so!

20x10.5 on the rear. But it depends on the wheel. I bought Verde wheels and they fit perfectly. I really wanted Asanti, but the off-set made them stick out.

Not sure if we've spoken before. But I'm doing 19X9.5 with 255/35 on my AWD GT. Along with eibach springs and sways, it's amazing.

Do the Eibach springs lower the car? I'll have the same AWD GT you have. I'm not sure if I want it lowered, will you still clear speed bumps?

No trouble clearing anything you'd want to go over normally. The drop is 1.4 in front, 1.2 rear. Really just looks sorted, not slammed. Do watch out for curbs in front, however.
