what’s up ,
So my premium only has 1600 miles on it but when i drive it to and from work and hit the acceleration and going over 60 mph and than come to a stop when getting off the highway or parking in the drive way i get this heavy burning plastic smell kind of smells like its coming from the front whelel wells is this normal or is it still in the break in period , i never had this strong of plastic burning smell in my other vehicles that I’ve owned

Whoa! That would creep me out. I have never smelled a thing. Not even a palpable "new car" smell (which is a good thing, actually). I'd be asking the service people about that right away.

Do you stand on the brakes? "Spirited" braking will definitely produce a smell. But "plastic"? There is no break in period beyond the initial 600 miles. During which you were supposed to drive between 2K and 4K RPMs, and not use the brakes except moderately, to allow them to seat properly, etc.

Yea man bugged me out the first time and was thinking oh maybe they forgot to take a lil of th plastic that covers the wheel off in transport but now its been a couple times, i think I’m gonna have to go to service now like you said especially that you haven’t smelled anything

Normal assuming it goes away
I had that smell when my car was new. Dealer said pads are pre bedded but they add a coat of smth so rotors dont rust during transport etc
Smell from brakes should go away soon
Check in a week if not prob good to go to dealer but only if smell is always there

This car already has c. 1,600 miles on it. Why would a smell go away in another week? Is it possible that driving so lightly on the brakes in 1,600 miles hasn't worn off the "pre bedded coat" of "smth" (what is that, acronym for "something"?)?

Hojae is Right!! We deal with it all the time it happens in all new cars but our Kias tend to have a strong one!

I'm just trying to help and save an unnecessary dealership visit. If u want to be sure, look in your wheel well - if wheel well liners etc are not loose or melting from contacting moving tires if loose, then smell should eventually go away.

Whoa! Don't you think that there'd be something more than just a smell with a rubbing tire? Like vibration, noise, and the obvious appearance that you describe of rubbed off plastic, etc. I don't think that @PStinger18 comes across as unobservant!

Brand new plastics tend to release a certain smell, especially if the temperatures are high. Give it some time and it will go away. Experienced the same with mine, I'm at 9.5k miles and smell it every now and then when sitting in heavy traffic and the temps are high.

Let’s see what happens I’ll give it sometime and see if the smell goes away ... if it don’t I’ll make them check it out when i go for an oil change

Some cars just tend to smell longer than others. It depends on the materials used, how long it takes to outgas, how close to heat sources, and how easily the smell exits it's confined space (engine bay, etc.). My Mazdaspeed 3 had one of the strongest plastic/new car smells I've ever experienced for 4,000ish miles. It was a bit un-nerving, but the dealer assured me it was normal. Plus it's under warranty, so don't sweat it!

Is your commute very hilly and do you use the cruise control? Cruise control will apply brakes to keep your speed from exceeding the set limit by much. In longer stretches it will definitely heat up the pads to smelling - ask me how I know (and why I turn off the cruise going down hills now).

Not really whole commute is 30 miles back and forth don’t even need to use the cruise control , normal driving i don’t smell it highway driving i smell it ...

True that .

Really! That long? I'll be swizzled. Either I have a dull smeller, or my car isn't giving off any plastic melting smells at all.

Yes. The manual warns against relying on cruise control going down long, steep grades. And my experience is checkered: sometimes the cruise takes over and shifts down to fifth gear to keep my speed more or less where I've set it; other times my speed just keeps going up well beyond the cruise setting and I have to bail out of CC. I haven't smelled any brakes in cruise control. I think that is a function of "smart" CC.
