Non-Retractable Information Display

As other's have pointed out. This is not at all uncommon in execution and design across the auto industry right now. It allows for a lower overall IP height, which aids the feeling of room and outward visibility. And also helps minimize future re-tooling/engineering costs when they upgrade the screen at like the mid-cycle facelift, etc.
 
I'm OK with it because it eliminates widening the dash center to make room for the vents and other electronic toys which gives me more room (one reason I bought one because most other cars are too restricted,) and because it's well below my line of sight (I'm 6'4"). Shorter drivers may not like it.

I haven't seen any complaints about what I think is a really bad design flaw in the Stinger. I am very interested in the Stinger GT with all options which means we're looking at a $50K plus sticker price. But unlike any other car in that price range (or any other car for that matter), the information display does not retract. Instead, it sticks up above the hood sight line like a sore thumb. First, this really detracts from the overall sleek design and sports car feel. Second, I am not aware of any other car brand that does not either place the display in the dash, or provide the ability for the display to rise up from the dash if desired. I have seen this issue mentioned on some youtube reviews, and I can only think this is a cost saving move on Kia's part. Nevertheless, its enough of a distraction when driving and a design flaw that I have decided to see if the 2019 model will correct this. That is of course unless I can't wait and trade in my Hyundai Genesis for a Genesis G80 Sport. Since the Kia Stinger and G80 Sport are close in price, while I would prefer the Kia due to its sportier feel, I feel that the display sticking out of the dashboard like a sore thumb is a deal killer.

Funny, I have the exact same issue with the Stinger and its frustrating because everything else about it is so exciting. Like you, I am also looking at the Genesis G80 Sport which has recently been discounted by dealers by about 10%, and therefore is very close in pricing to the Stinger. They're really 2 different cars in design and feel, other than the same engine. Nevertheless, the first time I sat in a Stinger at the dealership I immediately asked if the information display retracts. I was surprised that it does not, because although I believe there are 1-2 other examples of non-retractable displays, none sit as high on the dash. It may seem minor to some, but like you I am looking at the fully loaded model at $52K+, and at that price point I don't as readily accept design flaws that appear to be a cost saving move. Again, why didn't they either put it in the dash or keep it below the dash sight line? I would add that the Genesis G70 is coming out soon, and I hear the G80 will get a redesign for 2019, which means we'll have a look at it probably by this summer. So, I have decided to hold onto my old car a little longer (a 2010 Hyundai Genesis...which runs perfect and is still fun to drive).
 
I think my last reply didn't take so I will repeat. I love the design of the Stinger but the first time I sat in one I immediately asked the dealer if the display retracted into the dash. It clearly sits several inches above the dash sight line, and in my opinion detracts from the overall look and likely my driving experience. I don't care if some German models are doing this, I have sat in most of them and they either retract or have a much lower sight line. I am interested in the $52K+ loaded model, and at that price point I think this is more of a cost cutting move than anything. Like you, I am also considering the Genesis G80 sport, which just recently has been discounted down to the low $50's so there is very little difference in price with the fully loaded Stinger. Yes, there is a difference in feel but that display issue could tip the scale. Plus, the G70 will be out soon and has got great reviews. I have also heard the Genesis G80 will get a redesign for 2019, which means we will be able to look at other choices in the same price range with the same engine sometime in 2018. I currently own a 2010 Hyundai Genesis and its still running great and fun to drive. So, I have time. There's no such thing as a perfect car, but I do wish they had at least brought the display down a few inches, it clearly rises above the sight line.

I'm only 5'9" on a tall day. My seat is kept rather low. I can easily see the hood over the display.

If you're making this judgement from the default power-off position - as low and far back as the seat will go - I think you're doing yourself a disservice. The car, by default, is programmed to return the driver's seat to that position when the car is powered off. I would encourage you to adjust the seat to your preferred driver's position before judging the display's obstruction.

If you've done all that, I apologize. I just cannot see this as an issue, personally. But for goodness' sake, get the car you really want!
 
I prefer having it where I can see it easily rather than having to look down off the road onto the lower dash or center console. I also know that if they integrate it into the dash, it takes up a lot of room moving the a/c ducts and required widening the dash and console. That is the number one criticism I have of nearly every car on the road today -- inadequate side knee room. The Stinger solves that for me, style be damned.

Are you under 5 feet tall ? It is not a design flaw , There are dozens of examples where it sits at the same level , see post #22 . You better keep your car .................but I have a hunch you werent planning on buying a new car anyway :whistle::whistle::whistle::whistle:

I had a $52k Mercedes Benz C300 and it had the exact same dash layout with the screen looking the same way with 3 vents underneath. BMW does the same thing (except vent layout), so I don't think it has anything to do with cost savings. It's to have the screen easily within view without having to look down. Not many ways to make it stick up on the dash as high as possible without that type of design. Not sure on most but I always have music playing and/or look at the Nav for traffic reference, so if it was retractible it would always be up anyways looking as it is currently designed, hence why its probably not retractible.
