Non-Retractable Information Display

Unfortunately that's the design trend for some time now..........

I have seen someone put a towel on the top to protect it from the sun I'm guessing. He must think it's going to melt.

(Not a Stinger owner)
I guess that why we aussies buy the after market sun shades from super cheap auto! Our summer temperatures are a doozy. Sydney 47 degrees centigrade! Ouch, especially with bum on a leather seat:)

All the German benchmarks have the same thing .................. this is the way it is !:whistle::whistle:

Yep I see but they are a bit lower in the eye line.

Actually they all look higher to me BUT I'll bet they are all the same as the Stinger

As much as I agree that the "tablet glued to your dashboard" approach is tacky, I don't know of any besides Audi that retract. And even then it's only their upper end models.

This is the new look for many cars these days, personally I would have preferred it to be a little longer/wider to fit more info for the map to display on.

I'm 5'9" and just took a quick drive in my car. The first thing I did as I hit the road was to pay closer attention to the screen relative to the view out of the windshield. The only thing my 8" display blocks is the speaker grill in the middle of the top of the dash. I can see a little bit of black dash and all the hood I could were it not there to begin with. So, again, non-issue to me. YMMV.

One of the reasons I initially was drawn to the Stinger was the HUD because I'd grown used to rarely having to lower my eyes from the road in my old car, so I appreciate the placement of the screen, just barely lower than where my eyes would be on the road. I have driven rentals with screens neatly incorporated into the dashes, and I found them useless or at least inconvenient, since I had to take my eyes off the road for too long to use them. By "too long," I mean a second can be too long. And the Stinger screen doesn't block my view, either, and I am about 5'7-1/2".

I don't want a retractable display, but I wish the existing one looked more integrated into the instrument panel. Moreover, many functions, especially navigation, should be directly in front of the driver, so as not to require a 'side glance' to see.

I've used Nav once and when I looked in my HUD after setting it up, it showed me whether my next turn was left or right and at what distance. I was pleasantly surprised!

HUD is essentially a reflection off the windshield of a projection from inside the dash directly in front of the driver.
The dash has a fairly large recess which can be seen through the windshield.
If your dash does not have the square recess, chances of retrofitting are NIL, as you would have to replace your dash.
Even with the recess there, I don't see the possibility of a retrofit, which would likely require software upgrades if one could obtain even the hardware.
There are some aftermarket HUDs available but I have no idea how good they are.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear. Sorry.

The Audi guys at the car show (early last year) told me they skipped the retractable screens on the new 4 and 5 series, because their customers didn't use them. One never knows how accurate such information is, though. It could also have been a cost-cutting measure, or a design limitation with the dashboard/vent arrangement.

Do the cars that has retractable displays even give you the option to retract them while the car is on? If it just retracts when you leave the car and pops back up the moment you get back in, what's the point? I miss everyone just having industry-standard easily replaceable single and double-din stereo units, but those days are long gone it seems.

If they're like me, the reason their customers didn't use them is because the car has three or four instances (including "starting" and "reversing") where it automatically raises it, and gets a little tedious combating Audi's "user experience".

I haven't seen any complaints about what I think is a really bad design flaw in the Stinger. I am very interested in the Stinger GT with all options which means we're looking at a $50K plus sticker price. But unlike any other car in that price range (or any other car for that matter), the information display does not retract. Instead, it sticks up above the hood sight line like a sore thumb. First, this really detracts from the overall sleek design and sports car feel. Second, I am not aware of any other car brand that does not either place the display in the dash, or provide the ability for the display to rise up from the dash if desired. I have seen this issue mentioned on some youtube reviews, and I can only think this is a cost saving move on Kia's part. Nevertheless, its enough of a distraction when driving and a design flaw that I have decided to see if the 2019 model will correct this. That is of course unless I can't wait and trade in my Hyundai Genesis for a Genesis G80 Sport. Since the Kia Stinger and G80 Sport are close in price, while I would prefer the Kia due to its sportier feel, I feel that the display sticking out of the dashboard like a sore thumb is a deal killer.
My 2017 Mazda 3 GT sits right up there like the Stinger and it is fine. Also have the HUD that flips up when the engine starts, but no way to close it until engine off.

Only 47 Centigrade! Sounds like jacket weather;) It was 50 Centigrade (122 Fahrenheit) one day along with other days being close, here in Phoenix last summer:cry: I'm regretting not getting a GT2 with ventilated seats. It's possible, during the summer, it will look like I won a wet T-shirt contest every time I go to work....:D

I like the location of the screen as it's easier to glance at and/or use peripheral vision while driving. Other cars I test drove had it too low in the dash with the exception of the new Honda Accord, Audi A3/S3 (retracts in dash) and BMW 340i.
