Non-Retractable Information Display

I haven't seen any complaints about what I think is a really bad design flaw in the Stinger. I am very interested in the Stinger GT with all options which means we're looking at a $50K plus sticker price. But unlike any other car in that price range (or any other car for that matter), the information display does not retract. Instead, it sticks up above the hood sight line like a sore thumb. First, this really detracts from the overall sleek design and sports car feel. Second, I am not aware of any other car brand that does not either place the display in the dash, or provide the ability for the display to rise up from the dash if desired. I have seen this issue mentioned on some youtube reviews, and I can only think this is a cost saving move on Kia's part. Nevertheless, its enough of a distraction when driving and a design flaw that I have decided to see if the 2019 model will correct this. That is of course unless I can't wait and trade in my Hyundai Genesis for a Genesis G80 Sport. Since the Kia Stinger and G80 Sport are close in price, while I would prefer the Kia due to its sportier feel, I feel that the display sticking out of the dashboard like a sore thumb is a deal killer.

Initially, I did not like this. However, I have gotten a bit used to it and it does provide quite a bit of information based on the screen you are on. I did not like this when MB starting doing this, nor am I a big fan of the screen in the Tesla Model 3.

I highly doubt they will change this design. It is being copied from the current infotainment design language from the Germans. Late model MBs and BMWs have used this style for a while and Audi being the only one offering retractable displays (Q7 A7).

While some do not find it distracting (myself included), if it is a deal killer I wouldn't hold my breath for 2019 to bring any sort of changes you're looking for.

It wouldn't have to. The A7 design retracts inward instead of downward. So I think it is possible. Just not likely.

On the other hand, the screen is a smart design, never mind who came up with it first. It's rock solid (you can probably hang you grocery bag of it - did not think of it - did you?? LOL), secondly, what does not move/retract will likely not rattle in the long run. Thirdly, with all the info displayed, the driver needs the screen the minute he/she get's into the car (with the exception of @Kazz of course ) .
A retractable screen is really pointless - retracted only when the car is parked?!

I have a similar display in my curent BMW (i.e. on top in the 1 series, rather than the cave they have on bigger models.). But I do like radio information on the song played etc, so not something I miss ... personally fine with that. I just wish they'd have gone for a somewhat better resolution .. it looks a bit bland, despite good reaction times. Also the nonelegant huge frame is a bit .. meh.

I too, at first, was thinking it was retractable. However, I've grown accustomed to it being there and it isn't in view of my line of sight out the window. With how much I catch myself glancing up at it to see the title of one of my gazillion songs on random, I'm kind of glad it's there.

Welcome, @JMD. Most of us didn't like the "iPod" navigation either - in the beginning. It's seemed very out of place. In fact, you can read back to our initial discussions about a year ago - and there were a lot of complaints. However, owners have become accustomed to it and actually appreciate it now. Plus, as mentioned, Mercedes-Benz and BMW do it this way - and a lot of their customers are happy with it as well. It'll grow on you...

I'm not a huge fan of the display as I'd prefer it integrated into the dash. That's a problem though because it tends to move the display away from the driver. So the best choice is to place the display within easy reach of the driver and damn the aesthetics. Sorry it's a deal breaker.

I too would have liked to see the display retract at shutdown. But in saying that it’s not that bad, the other thing isn’t that if it did retract it could malfunction and then what do you do. Some thing else to fix.

Really?!? If forums aren't for this what are they for? I would say if you don't want to read those comments it is you that should not be on the forum.
I'm not a huge fan of where it is at either. I do get it though. If you want the sleek dash there is no room to integrate it.

When I say fix I mean if the mechanism to lower the display breaks hence the fact it’s not worth having. You can keep some of the people happy some of the time but not all of the people all of the time!

I would not say it’s a design flaw or a deal breaker. Every car is different you can’t get all the European car features in the Stinger otherwise you would be paying a much higher price. Some things have to give but the car has many great features. Just drive it and see if you can wipe the smile off your face.

I have seen someone put a towel on the top to protect it from the sun I'm guessing. He must think it's going to melt.
