New Navigation/Infotainment Update?

Will you update?

I just tested using Android Auto navigation through google maps and the car's built in navigation at the same time, and unfortunately found that using one would still disable the other.

@Grump Did you do anything special to get it to work? And what mapping program did you use?
Android Auto 12.1.6.64224 Waze 4.85.0.6 with AAWireless adapter. Also assuming you're running yesterday's release (do you see colour bars when you change the climate controls?)

Definitely it's a great news if AA and build-in navigation can work together. It will be even better if HUD can display info from AA navigation, but this is just a dream.

Unfortunately did the upgrade few hours ag (EU version 23y), but unfortunately internal navigation and Waze cannot running at same time on AA with cable. Didn't tried with Google Maps but will do tomorrow.

Dang thats so weird it works for me. Sorry to get your hopes up everyone.

I'm pretty sure AA has the ability to detect the car is equipped with a GPS antenna and will switch to using that, instead of the phone's internal GPS. Not relying on the phone's GPS has the benefit of allowing the phone to be placed in positions not best suited to receiving GPS sat data link. I suppose you can look at this as a downside, since you cannot run both the car's built-in nav and AA nav at the same time.

Personally, I rarely ever use the vehicle's built-in nav any more. The biggest problem is the hassle of having to synch addresses, POIs, search history, etc. with my phone. With AA, there is no need. I can search up a destination on my phone, get in my car, fire up AA, and the destination is already there.

Does AA actually use the car's gps signal? Any info on this online?
I'm 100% sure that Apple Carplay does not do that. The OEM nav is extremely accurate while Waze and GMaps will lose gps signal in the shortest of tunnels or passages.

You can do a search on this topic. From what I can gather, it depends somewhat on the app. Waze apparently stays with the phone's GPS, while Google Maps does use the car's GPS data, but can retain the use of phone's GPS.

Regardless, the AA protocol does allow for taking GPS data from the car, if so equipped.

You can also do your own testing, by "hiding" your phone from the sky and see if AA nav still works.

I'm not 100% positive, but I think while using Waze on AA it uses the phones GPS, but Google Maps uses the cars GPS. At least that's the case with many other vehicles. Not sure about ours.

Edit: Volfy beat me to it.

The OEM nav is extremely accurate
Not "extremely" since the latest update I did, which was c. half a year ago. None of the navigation versions did this before, but now our location in our driveway will show us in the neighbor's driveway to our left, or in the street to our right, most of the time. Sometimes it shows us in our driveway. Also, the feet before a turn has been way off for several updates now. It seems permanently broken. I'll be sitting at the light and it says that the turn is 50 feet in front of me. If you are moving, it's even worse and shows a useless closing distance that will make you miss the turn if you are relying on the shown distance to the turn.

I don't believe Google Maps uses the car GPS (but I'll have to check). I do know, however, that you have always been able to use both car Nav and AA google maps at the same time. You can't navigate on both at the same time, but they do not switch off use of a single GPS as both will show your location on the map if you do not have a destination set. Not navigating on both doe not have anything to do with the GPS. Also the location is slightly different on Google Maps than the car. Google is always a half-second behind. This does not mean they are using different GPS signals necessarily -- just that it takes a bit of time to get the signal to the phone. (I'm using the wireless adapter).

My guess is the car doe snot allow two navs as it is trying to stop two voices from talking over each other. I always turn the voices off -- but would be quite the confusing mess if you had two running and did not mute one (or both). If I'm right here, Kia has no reason to turn this functionality on.

I just wonder if there's a way to fool the car into thinking Google maps is not running? My wireless adapter (AAWireless) is able to fool the car/AA into thinking the car is not moving so the three clicks max thing is disabled. BTW this is very nice -- I hate scrolling for a song when the number of contiguous clicks is limited.

I take it as being the distance to where I actually turn. If I am sitting at the limit line at a signal waiting to turn left on say a large intersection with 2 lanes in each direction and a center turn lane, then yeah, the turn into the correct lane might be 50’ +/- ahead of me.

Not very often, but there are some occasions where I need to run two navigations at the same time. For that, it is much easier to run Google Maps on AA, like I usually do, then just fire up Google Maps on my other phone and leave the app open on it. We get new phones at least every 2yrs, so we always have spare phones for this sort of redundancy. It really doesn't matter if the second phone has an active phone plan or not, since I can always just hotspot into my primary phone for data connection. It basically becomes a mini-tablet, and the small screen is perfectly adequate for nav use. On the phone was how I used to run nav back before AA and when not every car had a big ol' tablet to run built-in nav.

Installed the update last night. Car Play still goes haywire with random Siri activations and swapping screens. I'll keep using bluetooth audio instead as it just works.

I 100% support the experiment.
Been Using the Motorola sound MA1 lately, and it has been flawless for me. Nearly instant connection and zero glitches (so far).

Not sure how much, if at all, better integrated wireless android auto, or wireless carplay could be.
I want to update my Motorola MA1 experience..

Was working fine, but one day, for no apparent reason, after the warranty year elapsed, it just stopped working, unable to reset, boot loop.

So I bought a cheap replacement which is working perfectly for now, and claims to have a 2 year warranty! Working perfectly thus far.

Wireless CarPlay Adapter for Apple with Fast Stable 5Ghz WiFi Bluetooth Connection, Mini Carplay Wireless Adapter Compatible with iPhone 6 or above/iOS10+ & Cars from 2016 Amazon.ca

After the update I discovered that "shazam" like functionality is missing. I'm not sure why - may be the reason is that I'm not paying of OTA updates.

Its called sound hound...same thing. Mine have never worked and I have full kia connect function.
It says its not enabled and blah blah blah.........I think someone called customer support and got it to work...but its useless imho
Maybe they just got rid of it...
Here is the thread for reference.

Does this unit you linked have any latency issues when making phone calls? I tried using an AI box from Carlinkit (the newest version) and had horrible issues with latency making it nearly impossible to have a phone call with someone because the person on the other line could hear everything they were saying but with a 2-3 second delay. I went back and forth with there tech support for several weeks trying all sorts of things to get it to work to no avail... Hoping this one might not have that issue.

I've used a different unit, AAWireless, since it first came out on kickstarter, and have had zero issues (latency or otherwise) with it. If you're looking to add wireless android auto, I would highly recommend one.
If I was only looking for wireless AA I'd go with that unit. What I'm really wanting though is a box that runs android so I can run Google Playstore apps.

No voice call latency that I have noticed.

I will do some tests shortly.
