3.3TT Mishimoto's Stinger GT Intercooler Kit R&D Thread

Possible but i just mean at that point we were talking about a comment on a comment lol

Hey everybody,

Sorry for the delay in responding here - Nick is out of the office this week, so I'm filling in for him and I wanted to make sure I was fully up to speed before I replied.

Regarding IATs being higher than stock during low-speed cruising/around town: we wanted to test this impericaly, so we bolted our Stinger up to Dynapacks. We're able to program the Dynapacks to control the hub speed and engine load to simulate different driving situations; so for this test we programmed the Dynapacks to run through a series of low speed pulls and short low-speed steady-state sections. We also set our dyno fan to a lower speed to simulate the lower airflow of around-town driving. After letting the engine idle up to operating temp, we ran this test for 5 minutes with both the stock intercooler and pipe kit and the Mishimoto kit, ending with a pull to highway speed. We logged the intake air temp via OBD and found that intake temps were lower than stock throughout the test.

It's also important to think about what effect any increase in IATs has during this type of driving. The probability of dangerous knock occurring during low speed/off-boost driving is extremely low. If you are experiencing knock in these load ranges, there's likely a bigger issue than a 10 °F rise in intake air temps. More importantly, when you're only using 100 lb-ft of torque to keep the vehicle at speed or start it moving, the effect of that rise in temp is imperceivable. As soon as you put your foot down, the pre-heated air is replaced by fresh cool air and IAT drops. I personally see this effect every day with my GTI (granted it's nowhere near the output of the Stinger) - cruising around town and in traffic, intake temps usually sit about 40-60 degrees above ambient, enough to be considered dangerous if the engine was under load or producing boost. The ECU may be pulling timing and reducing output during these times, but since I'm using so little power to move the vehicle, it's not noticeable. If I then go from a 5 mph roll with temps 40 °F over ambient to wide-open throttle, the intake temp drops to just over 10 °F over ambient by the time I build boost and the ECU does not need to pull timing.

Hopefully this helps clear up some of the concerns about IATs during around town driving. Feel free to let us know if you have any other questions.

-Steve

Thank you for the test and results

This is great to see!!!! Now I have to get it installed, but first I need to figure out the WMI jet and getting it installed properly!!

Hey Guys!

I just wanted to bump this thread up for our friends in Australia, since this kit is now in stock and available on our Australian website!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Screenshot_20201105-121328.webpthere is an improvement in airflow, the boost builds much faster. However the engine does get pretty hot and that effects everything under the hood. After about 2 pulls the iat was about 170 degrees... Hello pulled timing. Just another reason to install that meth kit I have sitting around.

Hey, General Vodka - so what is your assessment? Worth it? Even if not doing meth, just E30?

No e30 yet, but thinking about it. Looking into the sensors available. In summary yeah, I think it's worth it if your running the stock fmic. The boost builds much faster but all the does for me is just make me loose traction that much quicker lol. Tractionally challenged life with rwd. I might do some sort of heat coating later on. Well for 1.2k it's not that bad of a purchase, since now I have 2 core units since one came damaged. Guess that's the other thing Mish got going for it, the lifetime warranty

I wish the public was as invested as yall are in proving the mishi facts about cooling when it comes to politics or global warming or.... anything positive for renuable energy

Just ordered this and the catchcan...now for the 2 month wait for delivery as no one has any stock. I wish when companies sold things they had enough stock lol

hahaha if only, i was lucky and got the intercooler for $675US lol so i dont mind if they took the money straight away.

So to the people that already installed, do you think you could do it without lifting the vehicle?

My jackstands I have will not work, they are made for my Jeep with coilovers. I will not work without them, never work with just a jack.
