Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Issues

Interesting, contrasting comments, as usual. "Noisy" I saw addressed in a few of them. "As they wear". Hmm.

Because of the hassle of storing summer tires (temperature considerations being added on hassle: don't let them freeze), and changing back and forth, summers to winters to summers, ad nauseam, and the lack of assurance that Conti summers are quiet "as they wear", and the rapid wearing out of staggered rears (warrantied at 15K for either Michelins or Continentals), I am more inclined than ever to just put on the Continental super high performance A/S. As I've said, winter tires haven't been in our budget or hassling for decades. I can't remember the last winter tire I had. I'm totally accustomed to braving the worst winter weather on A/S tires. So, with all of that in mind, it is seeming more likely (this morning) that when the end of "driving season" comes I will ditch the Michelins for these A/S Continentals: same performance rating as the summers (I want my Stinger to only have tires that accommodate the car's performance capabilities), but with far more warrantied wear (25K miles), and no hassles changing seasons/tires! The A/S Contis are going to be quieter than Pirelli winter tires; I think that is a given.

A/s tires are inherently compromised... That said, if you don't have the room or don't want the extra expense of an extra set if wheels and tires, a/s may be your only choice. Conti's Make a great a/s tire in their contiextreme contact dws6, but the sport is a summer tire

I wanted something a little softer than the 4S but I couldn’t argue with free. But I am not sure how much of a difference it will be. Michelin rates the 4’s comfort as a “9” and the 4S as an “8.” Whatever that means lol. But doubtful that I will be able to feel much of a difference. When looking for a new tire, my personal preference over all others is comfort, and noise.

Softer means less treadwear. I think the MPS4 are rated at 320? That's already pretty soft and most will find it difficult to squeak out 20k miles from them. At less than 12k miles my rear tires were almost done for.

The 4S is even softer so treadwear will be worse. It's not a tire I'd want on a daily driver, for sure (unless it was free like yours).

For people that don't want to worry about treadwear or changing to dedicated winter/summer tires here's a good option a/s with a rating of 800 and a 80k mile warranty. Just keep the speeds under 130!!!

Not going to happen, not ever. My very first road trip with the Stinger saw me do 130 without even realizing it; just a simple pass of several rigs and the trapped cars between. 130 MPH without the slightest effort. It would be DUMB to put tires on a Stinger that imposed such limits. And, for that matter, dangerous as hell.

The 4 is rated at 20k miles and 4S 30k miles. Why wouldn’t you want to daily drive the 4S?

Softer tread will mean lower service life, but I believe the 4s actually has sidewall and reinforcement differences vs the ps4.

If you want noticeable more comfort for long distance crusing you'll probably want to consider 18" wheels and something like a conti dws or PSP. Most of the summer tires have stiffer sidewalls for response and structure under higher cornering loads, but a few have just a bit less sidewallstiffness. Trade odd is, less immediate steering, vagueness at the edge of dry handling, but typically better wet performance and more ride comfort as the tires soak up more of the impacts.

That makes sense. I was actually considering the Michelin A/S 3+ for the added comfort.

don't do it, the Ultra high performance A/S market is the epitome of compromised performance. Short tread life if you end up driving aggressively and because of the need for "higher performance" the sidewalls are stiffened but the tread still needs to be able to handle colder temps. If you are in an area that sees snow, try to have a second set. You'll have better comfort and much more selection of summer rubber otherwise.

For the value option, check out https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Firestone&tireModel=Firehawk+Indy+500, half the price of either Michelins. I do really like the PS4's for ride comfort, reminds me of the PSP, my previous favorite tire of all time, though i'd have to drive them side by side to see which one handles rough pavement better. Either way, the difference probably isn't too significant.

So I’ll preface this with saying Michelin has some of the best customer service I’ve ever encountered, and I love Discount Tire. I had to replace a rear OE Pilot Sport 4. The replacement (very long story short) is defective as it is causing a substantial radial pull. However, there are literally no Pilot Sport 4 anywhere in the country, and they are back ordered for at least 30 days per Michelin. I am wondering if there was a manufacturing issue which caused them to be pulled. But after a little back and forth Michelin agreed to replace all 4 tires with the Pilot Sport 4S free of charge! So if you have an issue with a tire, keep this in mind. I’ll report back with my thoughts on the 4S

Its crazy that you experiencing that, As I had a tire burst last Saturday (Rear wheel). Took it to the dealer, no tires in Canada they had my car for over a week, until yesterday when I said enough is enough, get the freaking tire from one of the other cars in the lot. Regional Kia manager accepted to do that, however the tire they put is OE Pilot Sport 4 S, which is slightly different. Kia opened a case to have a tire made from Michelin, apparently Michelin doesn't make those tires anymore and they only made them for the Stinger. It will take about a month for the tire to come in, but at least during the period am able to drive my car. This is a crazy situation, I don't think Kia was ready for the responsibilities that come with a high performance car.

Oe tire is pilot sport 4, not 4s, atleast here in the US. Also, plenty is availible in the US through Costco and tirerack. It sounds like a logistic issue one michelin's side. What caused your tire to burst? Sideway failure? Road damage?

I was driving on the Freeway, then it popped on open road....didn't think much at first till the pressure lights came on, pulled over and the tire was ripped into pieces, fortunately had a spare in the trunk.

I think the Michelins got put on as people in the US equate them to tires you find on luxury vehicles, plus they are great performing tires which are also generally quiet as well. I've used some Continental Extreme Contact before on a VW Touareg and those things performed very well on that truck. Had an emergency brake situation and they stopped so well that I thought I had hit the vehicle the way I was thrown forward and held by the belt. Didn't pay full price for them as I bought them off a forum member with 19" tires, I never knew a truck could handle that well with just a tire change> I also got some Nokians for it and winter was a breeze, I drove them everywhere! I typically don't go to NY in the winter but with those I did and encountered freezing rain and they handled it quite well. I could drive at speed and they never lacked for grip.

Now that I got that all out, I think I might have to source some to use on the Stinger. Saw that winter video early in the year with the Stinger, that looks like we should get winters for them to have fun in the snow!

Whoa! Is that warranty reduced to half mileage for different sized front and rear tires? If so, that is dreadful.

Where is the speed rating? I see none at all!? "Ultra High Performance?"
W rated, up to 168mph, the ps4's are y rated 186. Plenty enough unless you decide to remove the factory limiter and go for a run on the autobahn.

Just hit 5000 miles my 4 s are toast. Grip was great at first but once they get a little where on them they spin like crazy especially when you have mods done. I guess that’s the price to pay when you mod this car. 10 months old. Hopefully Costco can find some. Just order today.good thing is fronts still look brand new.

Yeah. The rears of the 4 go fast. My fronts where still looking brand new. No tread gone after 10k miles.
