I have a 2018 3.0 AWD GT, owned since new. I've always put winter tires on and the first 2 years felt like I was driving on dry pavement when on ice. Half way through last winter the car became extremely unstable when on similar surfaces when driving 60 kms + to the point I've had to pulled over to regain my whit. I've had the tires inspected and they said they look new and the dealer ship said there are no codes showing. Anyone else have this issue?
Snow and winter tires are a little better than shit on ice.
Snow and winter tires are dramatically better than summer tires on SNOW.
I see a lot of comparisons between studded and non-studded tires where they just drive on snow, so it's utterly pointless. Studded and non-studded winter tires are pretty much the exact same on snow and that's not why you get studded.
Nothing works like studded tires on ice. We've had some bad freezing rain this year, but snow also gets impacted over time and turns to ice. Roads are iced for months on end till the sun gets high enough to start blasting it off in the daytime.
I'm not saying everyone needs studded tires...but on ice nothing is close. Winter tires also tend to wear away the initial sipes and tread rather quickly, so even a relatively small amount of wear can cause a significant loss of traction.
Yeah, I remember a rainstorm here last year where all of a sudden, it turned to ice on the ground (ground is always colder than air here), like while cars are going 65mph. Chaos ensued as cars just start sliding all over the place. I've seen it happen at low speeds plenty, but that's when the condition are already there, but to have it happen in such a dynamic setting was...unsettling.
You could try lowering pressure, but likely your normal pressure is around 38 and lowering isn't a good idea long term.
For vehicles with much higher curb weight, you can often get away with just winter tires, not that they can go faster, but they seem to do better with traction at slower speeds...but they tend to have a lot more weight on the axles. My RWD camaro on the other hand, even with the same studded tires as my Stinger...you can steer, but putting power down is futile, you often can't get started or moving with any kind of slope and any kind of ice just makes you the idiot that can't get moving in traffic. With some weight in the trunk it's better, but it's dramatically demonstrating how important weight over the drive axle is.
