LAP3 Tune for Stinger 400 hp to the wheels

I've been really considering a LAP3, but can anyone explain to me how exactly they work? I get you just unplug the plugs for the MAF Sensors and plug the LAP3 in, then reconnect the stock plugs to the LAP3 ports but how does the LAP3 change tuning characteristics without actually touching the ECU?

The MAP sensors read the boost pressure going to your intake and sends that reading back to the ECU. The LAP3 Uncle Chip intercepts that reading and sends a different reading to the ECU, allowing the ECU to produce more boost. It doesn’t reprogram or change the mappings on the ECU.

Couple of things. First, I confirmed with David at K5 that two chips are not required for the 3.3. Second, the chip greatly enhances the driving characteristics, particularly in sport. In comfort, the drive is nearly identical to stock which I personally prefer. In sport, the power increase is profound and linear. It pulls off the line (hard) and to well over 100mph (hard). It’s easily as quick as my old M3. I’m running on the 91 setting. I ran a jb+ and it was jerky with respect to power delivery. Not so with the LAP3. We are a two Stinger family. My wife wanted one after riding in mine.
I had a JB+ in a 335i. Nice, easy installation - but not quite as smooth as the JB4 I'd used afterwards. In any event, if you plan on taking your Stinger down the quarter mile - you might be interested in this little reward I've worked up: $100 Reward

Hi team,
New here and strongly considering a Stinger... I'm planning to lease so... silly question but... If I install the LAP3 on the car for normal usage and remove it for service... can the dealership detect the mod? Would that void or affect the warranty in any way? Thank you!

That's a good question. If you blew something up and just unplugged it yes, they probably could. The ECU or black box would most likely have recorded events or readings that could not happen without the tune. If you took it off and drove it for 30 miles before taking it in? I doubt it but really don't know.

The LAP3 Uncle Chip is completely undetectable once it’s removed.

Unless Kia has morons for engineers they could detect the lap3, even after it is removed. The ECU logs all sorts of things like engine timing fuel ratio, probably a bunch of other things. I will again say if you take it off and drive it around maybe not, as I have no idea how much historical data it stores. But if the engine blows up and you remove the chip Kia will be able to see some readings that are impossible with out the tune. The dealer themselves may not know what to look for, but I am sure Kia corporate does, and can. I am sure Kia has a lap3 of their own they have tested and know exactly what to look for. Does anyone really think Kia does not have an internet connection and can see what mods people are selling for their car?

So does that mean the k8 stinger store/k5 optima store or lap3 will cover something should kia detect the tune after it's removed?
As with all tunes and aftermarket products, they are to be used at your own risk.

AFAIK, the cars don't record historical data unless they are hooked up to what Kia calls a flight recorder. The ones the dealerships have on hand can only record from one module at a time, and the Stinger has over 30 modules. If you take the LAP3 off the car before you take it to the dealership, they will have no idea it was ever there and won't be able to detect it either. (assuming your engine bay is clean, and there are no outlines from where it was )

Welcome aboard, @Felipe Rueda! Thank you for signing up! :)

So one of the selling points of the LAP3 is that it's removable but a catch can is recommended.

How easily is the catch can removed? Isn't it counterintuitive to remove the chip for dealership servicing but leave the catch can?

I am afraid I get really bored of these warranty questions. If you are going to mod your car, then take responsibility for your actions. Detectable or not why should Kia pay if you blow up the engine? If you can’t afford the repair don’t make the mod. Too many people want something for nothing. Grow a pair or leave the car stock. Rant over.

The reason it's important is because some people are leasing their Stingers, but want to be able to have the advantages of the increased HP too. if you're bored of the questions, then don't read this section.

So it is not even your car and you want to break it and get someone else to pay! Or perhaps return a worn out product so the next owner buys a dud. I am not bored with questions just bad attitudes.
I often mod cars and have replaced clutches and drive shafts at my own expense - why should someone else pay?

The car has a 100,000 mile (lifetime through my dealership) powertrain warranty and I'm going to use that to my full advantage. If that means I have to stick to mods that can be easily removed so the dealership doesn't know about them, then so be it. You're a fool if you buy or lease a brand new car and immediately void the warranty with mods. I take extremely good care of my cars, but i'll be the first to admit I'm going to drive the shit out of my Stinger. Call me selfish, but why should I care about the next buyer of the car --- not my car anymore, not my problem?
