This problem also appears to be temperature related.
Over the weekend, it was around 45F-ish and I would hear the rattle on occasion. So Monday, I had off and took it back up to the dealership. They couldn't replicate the noise. I was like, WTF? So I took it to a road that I know that it happens on and I couldn't replicate either. Went back to the dealership and agreed, no noise. Guess, what, temps were in the mid 60's. That night, cold front blew through and it was 35 degrees by 11pm and we had snow from 12am to 8am, Tuesday. It hasn't been above freezing since Monday night. I took it yesterday but they were closed due to the snow and ice. I was lucky since my path to the dealership had no bridges, not to mention no one was doing over 20MPH.
Anyway, I took it this morning and told them, it's doing it again and this time, I asked if the technician could ride along with me and I could point out the noise. They did, and I did. I kinda felt sorry for the tech. They had my car for around 3 hours. adjusting, driving, adjusting, driving, etc. They everything out of the trunk, plastic, tire, (of course, not the battery) liners, everything. They ended up adding more washers to the 'fix' and tightened every nut and bolt they could find. That 'ka-thunk' is gone but they were looking for a different noise now. It appears them fixing the 'ka-thunk' brought to light the new noise. It appears the plastic boots of the hydraulic struts of the hatch lid are rattling. Compare to earlier, these make the sounds of a feather landing on the floor. They've done what they could to get the plastic boots squared away and I told them that while this new noise is there, it's not an annoying noise and we'll see if KIA puts out a bulletin on them. For now, my mind can chalk it up to just regular tire/road noise. I mean, they had to point out this noise to me as we took it for a test drive before bringing it back home.
I'm good for now.
