Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

Hmmm so I contacted the "premium team" about getting the navigation updated in my stinger I just bought a week ago that has version 11.5. He said that we do get 1 free update and this would be my 1 free update. I don't really understand why I should use my free update to update the car to the version it should have already had when I bought it? Also, through apple car play I can already read my texts through siri voice control and I'm using waze for navigation, is there really even a reason to update right now?

Any thoughts guys?
If you're like me, that update is date-dependent (although I think the whole idea of a free update is BS and it's just customer service). If you wait a while, they won't offer you an update. Especially once a newer version hits. You might ask before you discard the current version.

Initially, they were not offering a free update. When a large number of people contacted them incredulous that their cars were not up-to-date when they got them, KIA Customer Service relented and agreed to this one free update scheme. I agree it is BS. The car should be delivered up-to-date and then one free update could be used at some point in the future when someone need or wanted updated maps and speed limit info (remember, the maps drive that nav/HUD feature that is better done with cameras reading the signs as you pass them).

The tying of user interface updates and feature updates (like the text messaging support) to the paid map updates is inexcusable. KIA said long ago they were working on a system to separate them, but everyone will have used up their free update by the time they figure it out. The car should have been delivered with the ability to update the UVO system separately from the maps; to do it over-the-air if you have telematics; and all updates should be free until they figure it out. Right now they have no incentive to move quickly because we idiot customers are paying for updates or using-up one-time free updates as they twiddle their thumbs.

There won't be any additional 'free update', if cars that were built prior to a new release are updated in the field before a customer takes possession. The one time update for new purchasers is only available to ensure the customer has the latest release available as of their possession date - and they've allowed it to be 'banked' and applied in the future at the purchaser's discretion. Navigation is a paid service.

I emailed my premium KIA rep and asked the question is only 1 free update because I used it and wasn't forwarned about having only 1 and he answered if they release another one in 2018, just contact him and he'd get me the update. So I don't know where this only one update and banking it is coming from.

"In 2018"...suggests they are limiting it to this year.

And which one did you get? v12 that has nothing of interest, or v12.5 that is a fairly major update? The maps themselves are extremely out of date even if you have the very latest version (compared to online maps).

Bought my car Aug. 17. I called on Oct. 9 to inquire about getting the map update. The woman told me I have a specific case manager who would call me back shortly. By the following day I had gotten no phone call so I called back again. The person I talked to this time opened a case number with me and pushed my request through to the necessary parties to get me the update and I would be hearing back by this past Monday. It is now Wednesday so I called again. After playing phone tag again I finally talked to my case manager and he directed me towards the website where I can purchase and download the update. I said "but I just bought my car why do I have to pay for this." He told me that their "promotional" offer for the free update has now expired. After a tad more pleading he agreed to attempt to work some magic and try to get me the update with some sort of good grace and I will be contacted again in another 2 or 3 business days.. What in the..

call the premium service number found at the front of this thread. I called a week ago, was on hold for 10 minutes, and the guy that answered immediately sent over the information to get my one time free upgraded. I bought my car this month.

Everyone in @MikeysGT's situation needs to be crystal clear--you are not asking for a free update, you are expecting your car to be delivered with the latest software that is available at the delivery date. KIA should be paying customers for the inconvenience of this software not already being installed when you get your car, not quibbling over whether to give it after you repeatedly pester them.

Second, you need to be clear that you expect any functional updates (such as those that came with v12.5) will provided free always. KIA will need to figure out how to separate those from the maps if they don't want to give map updates at the same time. KIA has already stated they are working on that. In the meantime, too bad for them.

Whether there is a single, multiple or no complementary map update provided is secondary.

Premium is who I talked to. Just called again and I was put on hold so the lady could contact the same guy I talked to an hour ago. This time the they said "oh yea no problem". However since I have the base GT and no navigation system, i.e. no SD card slot, they were stumped on how to get me the update. The update has a couple new features I would use (Bluetooth messaging specifically) however they said although I have been approved, they have no idea how I'm supposed to get the new software with no card slot. Wait another 2 days now while they figure it out. I guess maybe I'm the guinea pig for those with no SD card?

Free lifetime updates? Where did you hear that? Is that an Aussie thing?

Many countries get this. KIA and most manufacturers belong to a group that supports free map updates for life (with the company that supplies the maps for KIA and lots of other vehicle companies and like Google). Except KIA makes exceptions for certain countries for some unknown reason. Aren't we lucky.

Even worse is the tying together of the map updates with the UVO system updates.

Update: Since I have no SD card slot, no chance of getting the update myself. I have a service appointment next week at which time they are going to hook their computer up to my car and supposedly it will immediately tell them if my system can be updated to the newer firmware and software which I have seen on some of your cars from posted photos. Since everything seems to be a package deal with the maps, I'm not holding my breathe to get wireless bluetooth messaging..

Let us know how it goes! I'm needing it too. Lol.

This will be useful to know--whether the usual ECU and TCU updates done by the dealers (by all manufacturers for for all cars) also includes infotainment software in a Stinger (but separate from maps).
