Kia Stinger Navigation Map Update

How is that? My new radio had the firmware update, when they replaced my radio, but the nav is still on version 10 and I get bluetooth text messaging?

First pic is my old radio. Second one is the new radio. In both cases the map version is old. This leads me to believe that you can update the firmware without the map. Unless they package them somehow for consumers to force you to spend money for an updated software.20180919_083308.webp 20180928_170317.webp

Kia (currently) does not have an option available to owners to obtain the firmware update separately from the navigation software - they are bundled together. If you want the new firmware, you have to purchase the latest map 'bundle'.

Precisely.

You obtained the latest firmware because you had your head unit replaced with a new unit. As far as I've seen to date on this forum, KIA has only been providing 'new' head units for this service bulletin, presumably because the car is new enough that they don't have any remanufactured units in the pipeline. Regardless, even when they do have remanufactured units available, I'm fairly certain that flashing them with the newest firmware will be part of the remanufacturing process.

The SD card which was transferred from your old head unit to the new one still has the old navigation maps - so it didn't change. You should contact KIA to get an update to the latest nav maps as well, assuming that your car purchase was within their free upgrade window.

I've had some oddness with my head unit. On, but no matter the input - bluetooth, radio - the volume is extremely low and muffled. Unusable. Shut down and restart doesn't fix unless it sits overnight. I wonder, when I report that, if I'll get the new firmware.

Ah ok. Thanks for clarifying. Makes me wonder if the firmware can just be copied from the sd card. My 12.5 map update is on the way.

I believe the new card will 'lock' to your head unit as part of the installation - you won't be able to use the contents with another car.

Good info, thanks! My car is 2 weeks old and has the old version. Not sure if I need the new one (I use Apple Carplay for everything) but I set up an appointment for my dealer to update it.
SIGH - I took my car in last week for the map update, ended up getting a tire replaced for free (tire & rim warranty, I guess I just broke even on that $10/month for the next 3 years), but somehow, the dealer didn't update the software.

I'm still curious what's in the update, other than map updates, which I don't care about as I'm an Apple Carplay user. The release notes state:

The latest update provides compatibility improvements to the previous version

Any idea how to determine what changes are in there?

Having done the 12.5 update recently. I noticed a big difference is sound quality on the satellite radio, also changes to the layout of the radio station information on the satellite radio, text messaging feature, different ring tone when receiving a call, that's it so far.

You were post #33 in it.

You have too much time on your hands and/or have an attitude problem. We don't need to post snarky replies to people for saying thanks. And if you had half as many brains as you have bad attitude, you'd realize that my post #33 that you refer to was from two days later. When I said thanks to you for referring me, I had not yet seen that thread. Not to mention there are so many overlapping threads on just about every topic on here, no one should assume anyone has read everything on a topic before they post.

Hmmm so I contacted the "premium team" about getting the navigation updated in my stinger I just bought a week ago that has version 11.5. He said that we do get 1 free update and this would be my 1 free update. I don't really understand why I should use my free update to update the car to the version it should have already had when I bought it? Also, through apple car play I can already read my texts through siri voice control and I'm using waze for navigation, is there really even a reason to update right now?

Any thoughts guys?

Exactly. Your car should come delivered with the latest version and you use your free one in the future. Anything else is outrageous. How much did you pay for PDI by the way? What did you get for it?

The map/navigation updates on the Stinger are a paid service. Kia, as have many manufacturers, decided to make the maps an extra-cost discretionary purchase for the car owner, instead of bundling that cost into the price of the car. You are getting a 'free' update so that your new car, as purchased, will be brought up to the latest version at no cost to you. If you had purchased a vehicle with the latest map software already on it, you wouldn't be receiving a 'free' update from Kia.

As for whether to update now, the BT text messaging is the biggest feature in the last update. As that is not something you particularly need right now, then I would wait to update until either 1) you feel a need to update your maps to get improved street coverage, POIs, etc., or 2) another feature is added that you desire to have.

Hopefully Kia will at some point separate the maps/navigation updates out from the head unit software updates, as they are really two separate things. I've been waiting for that to happen since purchasing in the Spring, but haven't seen any movement on that so far ... :(

hm...... we're in the middle of completely tearing down all the interstate bridges going through downtown and they're being rebuilt from the ground up with a different configuration (this process is as nuts and as horrible as you're imagining it) so maybe I should save the update until the new bridges get included in the new map.

which version did you have before?

It's irrelevant whether a manufacturer chooses to charge for map updates. When you buy a car and pay for PDI, the minimum expectation is that it should come with the latest software available at the time of delivery--paid or not, maps or otherwise. Just like it should come with the latest other fixes, such as for the hatchback rattle. There is no excuse or rationale for less than this in 2018.

Sounds like a good plan!

Please consider putting your location in your profile - so if I'm in your area in the next while, I'll know which downtown to avoid ... :p
