3.3TT Kia Stinger Aftermarket Exhaust Information and Discussion

Honestly, you have great points and I know a lot of people that would agree with you. The same is true for a lot of other people who replied to your post on this thread.

You’re absolutely correct about it being nearly impossible to “out engineer” the original engineers, especially with all the computer and emission technology on today’s cars. I would never try to increase this motor’s power more than 20%, unless you’re a bonafide race shop, or it will surely fail to last.

That being said, those of us who just want a little edge have options available to us that didn’t exist in the 70s. I’m convinced that I can add an uncle chip that will increase my turbo boost by a few pounds. But if I do that, I also need to allow more air in and out. That’s not really re-engineering, it’s just basics. In the process, we pick up a little throttle response and some cooler sounding components. Hopefully we get some better track times, and definitely should get a whole lot of pride from our work. I would bet your ‘70 Mach 1 would have generated some drool from the corner of my mouth.

We get the advantage of lots of little shops that have made huge advances in minor modifications and the internet (like this forum), too. It’s well known that adding some boost to the turbo requires an oil-catch can and preferably a more efficient intercooler, and those parts are easily available from shops with more technology at their fingertips than I have.

The downside to all of this is going to be in how KIAs warranty holds out for those that don’t modify their cars. If I can remove 90% of my mods for warranty service or smog in under an hour (like two bolt muffler deletes and uncle chips), is that really honest and fair to KIA? If I (and a bunch of others) blow up my engine at 60k miles and take it back after removing mods, KIA will take some heavy losses. I am personally very respectful to my cars and don’t hot rod them constantly, but I know others aren’t as loving to their vehicles as I am.

Regardless of horsepower increase and engine longevity, customizing cars will always be fun.

After 25+ years of professional experience and training, in auto repair, and a lifetime as a "car Guy", I am convinced it is near impossible to "Out Engineer" the engineers. I learned w/ my 1970 Mustang Mach 1(in 1972), aftermarket items, while they may SOMETIMES provide enhancement, there is always almost a negative trade off.

Aftermarket manufacturers MUST claim improvement, or else they would sell nothing! Usually "UP To" this much HP, or "Up To" better MPG. Up to means from 0-?, it makes NO promise.

If one is going to consider modifying a vehicle, they should consider "What am I trying to FIX"? What is the cost and will the money spent, amortize and "Pay off". You pay your money and make your choice.

I’m not looking to turn my Stinger into a track car, it will still be my daily driver and I want it to be comfortable for my passengers when I have them.

Generally speaking (from other turbo V6 cars with exhaust mods), who manufactures QUIET free flow exhaust?

A long time ago, I would have compared Borla to Flowmaster - and would have wanted Borla for the street and Flowmaster for the track. I’m definitely not looking for a muffler delete, just less restrictive and relatively quiet exhaust. (It also helps if I can still pass smog in California... )

Any suggestions for manufacturers I should be watching for?

Thanks for the clip. Sounds great for the track, but too loud to be the setup for my daily driver. If I could find a way to keep the factory sound (or fairly close to it) and just increase the airflow by 10%+ I would be all over it. Might not be possible...

This has the valve. Flip a switch and it’s quieter than stock

Midpipes are off right now so I can’t but go drive and rev your car and that’s what it sounds like. It’s perfect system.

I’d almost have to hear it to believe it. The idea of being able to switch from comfortable sedan to screaming sports car is sorta attractive.

Do you have any pictures of what exactly is changed? Like before and after, or the kit before it was installed on the car?

Check out my YouTube I have a unboxing video there look up “stingergt channel” on youtube

Drone. Avoid drone at all costs. I'll be waiting for dynos, sound clips, and personal reviews.
Drone can completely ruin the ride comfort that the stinger has.
I do want nice sound, but drone is not a good sound, and it gives you headache... :(

Will the Borla exhaust be drone free?

Any drone on this system with the valves open? Closed? I really like this exhaust, except for the price.
No drone it sounds really good. Price has come down since I got it and it really isn’t that much more than other brands at this point but the quality is amazing and the variable feature is something no other brand it doing

This is very weird.
Maybe its a difference in sensitivity, because I tested the Jun BL exhaust and the drone was bad. (and I know several owners with same opinion)

Does it really matter just close the valve for long quiet drives.

The racing version is the one with more drone. (According to Jun BL)
How do you define the word "drone"? I think there can be confusion around that word and aftermarket exhaust. I hate and get a headache from what I call "resonance" that vibrates the car and makes it almost impossible to hear anything inside the car at certain RPMs. I expect some exhaust sound, even while cruising if you go to an aftermarket exhaust. Very few aftermarket exhausts are silent or nearly silent when cruising, that I've experienced.

Yes I am refering to the resonance that occurs at a certain RPM (around 2500 rpm for the Jun BL exhaust). At other RPM you only hear the exhaust from the outside and then when you meet that rpm value suddenly you can hear the exhaust from the inside of the car through the vibration.

I'm in total agreement with you. That vibration can be awful.
