Kia K900 and Stinger Sedans Recalled Due to Fire Risk

Where is the information this recall requires an engine/tranny drop? Is the turbo oil hose assembly not serviceable from under the car? Aren't they just installing a heat shield of some kind? I'm not aware it was such an ordeal.
Have you not read the full recall procedure yet?
There is no heat shield.
They are just replacing the LH turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly with an
improved one on the applicable vehicles.

Roll the dice if you'd like. I drive my Stinger pretty hard. I take lots of banzai runs between Crescent City, CA and Eureka, CA through the Redwood 101 corridor. I make several trips a year between CC and Salem, OR. Lots of river canyon carving, high speed passing, and sustained speeds on I5.
OMG, you must be an enemy of the state. Having fun with cars in CA must be illegal!

Just kidding you. Hope your recall goes smoothly. Mine was into the shop Tuesday, sitting mostly. Hopefully I'll get it tomorrow. Don

That looks like a line that's already blown. Do they show any signs BEFORE they fail? I have a hunch they look fine right up until they burst, but that's not based on anything concrete.

My understanding is that the heat wrap fails and that causes the braided line to succumb to heat. If you look at the heat wrap on that line, it is frayed at both ends.

The heat wrap on my line doesn't look anywhere near that. It is pressed at both ends and looks brand new.

Are you able to see this - from the bottom?
Do you have any pics, just for curiosity

No, from the top. I posted earlier in this thread (#185) about how to inspect the heat wrap.

It would be almost impossible to get a good photo as you can barely see it.

My dealership confirmed that Kia/Hyundai made a special tool to perform the service. Is it true? Who knows. But no engine drop is required.

I took some time today to inspect the heat wrap on my car.

With a flashlight, looking straight down along the oil dipstick tube, you can barely see the back end of the heat wrap. Further forward you can see the front end as well if you look between the two black coolant lines that run along the top of the turbo and the engine block.

The line you're looking for is below the two black coolant lines and has a silver heat wrap on it.

You can also get your hand in there along side the TCU and the dipstick tube and spin/turn the heat wrap so that you can see both sides.

Mine looks brand new. No signs of heat damage so no plans to do this recall anytime soon.

For reference, I have 25,000 km's on my car and it is a weekender, not a daily.

Here is a bad line for reference:

I think Ima fine. The shroud material I can see, barely, way down in there, looks nice and tight and not discolored. Should be good for the rest of the year, until I get an oil change, and I'll schedule that for when they get the parts in. By then they should have them easily available.

Decided to be sure. Our "family mechanic" booked me for Friday morning to get the car up and take a look. If there is any sign of a compromised heat shroud, of course I will schedule with the dealer to get the recall work done pronto.

As I had hoped, the oil feed line and heat shroud are fine. They look brand new at over 68,000 miles.
You can see the shroud, at the end of the pointer stick.

Looks like mine. Appreciate the photo and the update as it's nice to see a higher mileage example.

I can't get over the number of people who are leaving their perfectly drivable vehicle at Kia dealerships for days/weeks to do this recall. Every day there is at least one new post on the FB groups about cars sitting due to a part delay, air in the coolant, defective parts, wanting to charge to remove after-market parts, etc. All things we predicted would happen when this recall was announced.

Inspect your oil line heat wrap, if it's fine, avoid this recall. It's not worth the hassle and for me, the risk of this line blowing is far exceeded by the risks associated with dealer incompetence.

This recall service was recently performed on my Stinger, over at Ken Ganley. I think they completed this recall on 16 Stingers before they did mine.

All parts ordered came in one full kit. Once it arrived I scheduled to drop her off and pick up the loaner. Took them about 3 hours and my Stinger was gone only for the day.

For the replacement of the oil feed line, that all seemed to have gone alright without any issues. They did however tear the foam cover over my fuel pump and improperly bled the cooling system, allowing in air, which caused that water sloshing sound. I burped it myself to remove the air, and they replaced the foam cover with a new one.

It’s always something with them, it’s never easy. As much as I love this car, I hate KIA’s service department.

I had my recall recently done. It seemingly went well. No issues so far but the overall experience was terrible. The car was returned with greasy hand marks all over the B-pillar and the fender. Paperwork had the wrong mileage. They messed up my mileage on my last oil change (by over 18000 km) but corrected it. This time it the had it over 13000 km too high. When I check on CarFax it now shows this incorrect mileage. I went in to get it fixed and they said I could just cross it out on the work order. When I said that it is now wrong on CarFax, they said there is nothing that can be done. Horrific customer service. As a result of their incompetence, I am cautiously hoping that they actually did the recall properly.

This was probably going to be my last Kia, and this completely confirmed it.

I take mine to Vandevere as they are closer but I bought mine from Ganley. There is no excuse after 16 completed cars to have any issues. And that’s what worries me about the recall. The lack of urgency to do it right the first time because these service centers are incompetent, over booked or whatever. Still waiting on this one for now.

Had my turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly replaced yesterday. I had taken my car in to get a slow leak on one tyre diagnosed and fixed, and they said they had the part in for the recall and did I want it done. It was about a 4-hour job, but all went smoothly and no issues so far.

Dropping off my 18 GT2 AWD tonight for the oil line and apparently a brake booster recall. I told them I want them to physically inspect the coils too to see if there is any corrosion or problems with any per the stereo issues.

I emailed my service department a month or more ago and they said they've done a lot of recalls and have the special tool. Funny, my town is only about 50k people and I've seen about 3 other Stingers in town. :)

I thought about trying Vandevere, they're a little bit farther away for me, but worth it if their service department has more competent techs.

I completely agree. Hopefully my car will not have to see the inside of that shop for a long time.

Just a note to anyone who has not completed the recall yet. They replace both the coolant and the oil. I wish that I had known about the oil. They drained 7L of synthetic and replaced it with their in-house brand, 1,500 km after I had changed it.

That is interesting, I had asked my dealer if the would need to drain oil for the recall as I needed an oil change and if they could give me a break on the oil change. My horrific dealer said "no oil needs to be drained", even though I knew at least some did. Glad to see they are doing their part to maintain the reputation of terrible Kia dealership experiences.

I'm due for a change, I will just change it again this fall.
