3.3TT Just curbed the sh*t out of my passenger rear rim and tire

Does anyone use the park assist? I have mine turned on all the time and if you watch the picture of the car on the dash, it will give you a color coded warning when you are getting to close to a curb. It works for me....

Paul, I use park assist all the time. The issue for me was that I was in a parking garage with a concrete island next to my car. Knew it was there when I parked the car, but upon leaving 8 hours later I had forgotten (don't usually park in that garage).

Park assist will not aid you in determining what is parallel to the car, only in front or back or at oblique angles front or back. My front bumper was ahead of the curb to my right (as an island, it wasn't like a long curb attached to a road), so the sensors registered nothing when pulling forward (I curbed driving forward, not reversing, so mirrors and rear sensors would have been of no use). That, and the fact that the infotainment system display took probably 30s+ to boot up after the car was turned on (dark screen, no info, nada -- this is the second or third time that's happened, adding a bit to my distraction).

It has been my experience that if you have your park assist turned on all the time, and when you start your car, the front right sensor would beep and show a car between your tach and speedo with a yellow light in the right hand corner. Not on the infotainment system screen.

Paul, you are correct about the center display (my point was I was distracted by the information display failure), but park assist will not register something out of the field of view of the sensors.

I think that the forward-right band would not have detected an "island" that is alongside, only one slightly forward of the bumper. So approaching the car from the driver's side and not remembering the "island" is there (and you cannot see it), is a "perfect storm" set of conditions for disaster. "There but for God's grace go I", we should all be saying it. What you do not SEE (or remember) will ambush you unless providence dictates otherwise.

I leave my parking assist on constantly and use it "religiously". And I park very slowly. And I back out very slowly. Maybe I'll pick it up a bit as I gain total familiarity with this car. But at my age, don't count on it. ;)

Paul, for the sake of clarity, I've attached an example. If the sensor is forward of island, it won't register. Pulling forward and turning won't trigger the sensor, either -- it will, however, result in a bad time :(.

Yes, but....Park Assist button is lit when in use. Next button, Stop/Start, is lit when it is OFF. Confusing? Not now, after I curbed my fascia, lol.

Use both every day. All the time.

I've always wondered why no on puts the sensors a little lower on cars. Out Volvo S60 T5 in the R Design trim has the 2 center sensors lower than the rest on the front and rear, this has save me driving over those concrete things (that they usually put in before the curbs in front of business) and ripping my bumper off. I did that once on my 535, the thing had a piece of steel sticking out of it and it caught on the bumper when I was backing out, not pretty.

I think manufacturers should add this to vehicles that are lowered so folks can avoid this sort of thing. Kudos to Volvo for thinking of that.

I've had this happen before with different vehicles when parking beside (parallel to) a low concrete curb, and not remembering it's there when moving the car later. Especially insidious when they have a concrete 'island' in the middle of a parking lot.

Fortunately those occurrences didn't result in wheel damage - either because of higher profile tires, or because the wheels were turned outward into the curb, before driving at an angle into it.

The 360 cameras are fantastic to precisely monitor wheel position and avoid damage when initially parking, but wouldn't have been of any help in this situation - they don't get used when driving away!

Actually, the Kia system gives a bird's eye view/rear camera split screen in reverse. And the driver can select different proximity angles coming and going.

Amazing. How does it acquire the bird's eye view?

Yes, and it does a great job of showing exactly where the tires are precisely in relation to the curb - in forward or reverse. None of which is any use when you are driving out of a parking spot you've carefully positioned yourself into hours before, and not expecting that curb beside your car to be there - as you aren't using any parking aids ...

The car has cameras mounted on the front, rear and under the mirrors on each side. The software 'stitches' the images from the surrounding environment together with a canned overhead image of the car, and corrects for geometric distortion to present a realistic looking composite view. Really does a great job!

I am even more impressed. This is new stuff to me. Creating an artificial view of reality composed from real views. The concept never entered my mind. The world is indeed more than we know, or can know; until it is revealed.

I wonder if I had known what 360 degree camera view is, if this would have been enough to make me pick a GT2? Probably not by itself. But this is a wheel saver. And if you are saving your wheels you are saving the car.

Unfortunately, the 360 camera system wasn't made available in the U.S. market on any trim, but is on the Canadian top trim - a sore point with many. And yes, it works extremely well for protecting wheels, as in either forward or reverse you can switch to the side camera view and see exactly where the wheel is positioned in relation to the curb as you maneuver - you can literally park it within millimeters.

Many are hoping the option will make its way to the U.S. market for MY 2019.

Oh. This is one of "those" sore points I've been reading about. Well! Count me in as peeved that such a facile tool is not an option in the US?! WTH!? Kia is a weird thinking group for sure.
